The top two seeds are head and shoulders above the field. However, for posterity:

1) Alabama
2) Clemson
3) Ohio State
4) Texas A&M
5) Cincinnati
6) Notre Dame

I think it’s time to expand the playoff. Six teams, two byes. No more than that. Power 5 champs all get an automatic and one wild card from any conference.

1. Bama
2. Clemson
3. ND
4. Aggies
5. Cincy
6. tOSU

Ohio State played a half schedule and does not deserve to be in the playoffs.

The Pac-12 champ hasn't been ranked in the top 10 since 2016. Why do the Power 5 get such a huge priority?

I'm applying my brand new "getting your ass kicked by your conference champion disqualifies you from the playoff" standard.

For the next round of playoff expansion, I vote for the P5 champions, the top ranked G5 champion, and the two at larges. Anything involving rankings/seedings is done by a BCS-style computer.

What is your argument for tOSU over ND? They played 6 games. That is as disqualifying as it gets.

There are two questions here: (1) Who do you think are the best six teams in the country, and (2) Who should be the top 6 in the playoff rankings? Because those are two different questions.

I think Ohio State is clearly one of the top six (probably top 3) teams in the country, but I'm with a lot of you - only playing 6 games...not sure you should qualify for the playoffs.

And if ND is serious about not playing if they don't have some fans....screw them. So my four playoff teams would be:

1. Alabama
2. Clemson
3. Cincinnati
4. Texas A&M

Which will inevitably lead to another Alabama-Clemson showdown, which is fine with me, because they're almost certainly the two best teams in the country.

EDIT: But it's gonna end up being: Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, and Notre Dame. Book it. (pardon the pun)

Maybe not the thread for it, but Herbstreit has been pretty vocal about it this week: the playoff has become a boring, predictable event. Alabama, Clemson, and Ohio State, and this I year think it's really just the first two, are so much better than everybody else it renders the 4th seed mere cannon fodder. The occasional outlier like LSU last year isn't enough to change that. I think expansion to 8(power 5 champs+ 3 at large) would help bring back more urgency to the regular season, but I don't know how the disparity between the top 3 and everyone else can be addressed, or if it can even be addressed. The result has to been to turn what started out as a really great, promising event into something of a yawn, IMO. I love CFB, but I think it's heading in bad direction due to this.

I agree somewhat with this, but the current format has been in place for 7 years and so far, two #4 seeds have won it, tOSU in 2014 and Alabama in 2017, so it's not always a certainty that #1 and #2 meet in the championship.

I'm not so sure if expanding it to include more teams will address the problem that you currently have 2 or 3 programs that are loaded and everyone else is cannon fodder.

Not sure what to do to make it more exciting/less boring and predictable.

Further scholarship limits would probably do the trick. Taking the FBS limit of 85 scholarships for Football down to the 63 of the FCS would in many cases force talent to spread out rather than come together in one or two places. A few tougher decisions for Alabama and Clemson means more good HS players that might become great college players looking harder at the next tier and so on and so on.

Yes it would for sure; spread out the talent and somewhat level the playing field so to speak.

Haven't been able to track it down, but I have to think this is the first time it's possible for two schools to play each other three times in one season. Has it ever happened before? (It seems unlikely that ND gets past Alabama, of course).
