Finishing 0.500; A Worthwhile Goal Or A Booby Prize

I became a Red Sox fan in '67 and sometime in the mid to late '70's I remember hearing either Ned Martin or Jim Woods on the radio mention that the Sox were the only team to finish at or above 0.500 from '67 up to that point. Since then finishing 0.500 has been the Mendoza Line for a season for me. There have been seasons where we've seen them blow past the 81 win mark around Labor Day, there have been years where they'd need a 10+ game winning streak starting around September 20 to make it, and there have been years where it comes down to the final week. This year could still be one of those final week years. Nothing beats a World Series or even a playoffs year, but is finishing 0.500 a worthwhile goal or a trivial pursuit?

You realize we have 80 wins right now? Unless we lose our last 10 we're going to finish at .500 or better.

I wanted to see EdRo get to 20 wins, but that’s out of the question now. So shut him down. There’s no need to put any more innings on his arm.

I want to see Eovaldi finish strong. He has 2 starts left. Hopefully they go well.

I want them to lose every other game and get the highest draft pick possible. There’s still hope they could be passed by the Mets and Phillies, and stay behind the Cubs and Brewers. I’d be playing all the scrubs. Start Gorkys every game, shut down Betts. Give Centeno a full tryout. Let him catch 8 of the remaining games. We should not see Leon, unless it’s at 3B batting lead off in a game started by Trevor Kelley.

Lose, Lose, Lose.

If we’re not making the playoffs, I don’t really care about finishing .500 or not. I’d like to see Mookie/X/Devers get another milestone or two, and 20 wins for Edro would be nice.

But really, the only consolation prize that matters to me at this point is beating the Devil Rays this weekend and hopefully knocking them out of the last wild card spot. Helps Tito, and fuck the Devil Rays.

That would be a reasonable payback for 2011 if they’ll replace their manager with Bobby Valentine next year.

I'm with Hank. Take a bite out of the Rays hopes if you can. .500 or better is okay.
At least we're not the Orioles, who only have four winning (>.500) seasons out of the last twenty.
