I didn't think it was even possible for me to get annoyed by manager-firing talk before the damn manager was even hired.

I was wrong.

Here's the thread.

I'm sure he's gonna fuck up the lineup, bring in the wrong reliever, stick with a starter too long, play a sucky vet over a totally awesome kid, shove a deserving vet out the door for some snot-nosed brat, and the goddamn sonofabitch isn't even going to let Pesky sit in the dugout.

Oh, and I'm fairly sure he's going to be fired at some point.

Middling infielder with a less than middling career as my non-Sox friends tease me. Yet, I'm so happy.

He was my wife's favorite Red Sox when he played for them. Of course her name is Cora and her favorite number is 13 with ironically was his number. So there you have it.

As far as I'm concerned? He's still on the hot seat.

I don't see the point of him scouting the WS so intensely. Are the Dodgers and the Astros really going to make any players available this winter?

He claims to have invented Nakajima B5N bombers. Fire Cora, Cora, Cora!

Can he teach every hitter how to foul off 18 pitches and then hit a homerun in the same at-bat?

Remember that? That was awesome.

Career .243 hitter, which means he failed 76% of the time. Just great. We’re going to lose 120 games / year with this guy at the helm.

He failed 75.7% of the time. This is the kind of thing that gives our Board a bad name.

Lol boo hoo.

Yes, Cora will be second guessed. All managers are second guessed. One of the fun things about baseball is that we get to manage along with the manager and debate whether he made the right decisions during and after the fact.

I mean, what’s the point of this whining? That our second guessing of Farrell, Bobby, Tito and Grady is somehow meaningful or dictates that we should not be happy and optimistic about Cora? Do we lose this right because we picked apart Farrell? Because that’s pretty ridiculous.

I criticized Farrell a lot and thought he was often very bad during the games. I will evaluate Cora’s decisions and criticize them too if I disagree with them. That said, I’m very open to concluding that he’s a good manager and decision maker, along the lines that I view Belichick and Stevens.

Excuse the rant but I think the bitterness about the inevitable criticism of Cora is pretty naive.

You guys are all just sooo quick to get rid of the third best Sox manager of all time...
I gotta be honest, that's not a high bar. If we eliminate the guys from a century ago for lack of perspective, the two best are Tito and Dick Williams no? Farrell may well be third right now.

The worst managerial hire they've made this year. DD needs to go.
I have to disagree...you may say that I am a Corapologist, but he is undefeated for his Red Sox managerial career. Even the benighted Tito lost at least one game per season!! In Cora we trust.

The cradle of the game.
So Mr. Perseverance announces his departure before team's season is over?

I guess Brandon Workman should prepare to be ready by the 4th inning next year.

As long as he cuts the head scratchers and mistakes back to, say three, maybe four times a week then I'll be happy.

This is great. I'm sure Butch Hobson never said anything so negative about his team 3 years before he was hired here.
Butch liked to limit his comments to what was going on between the lines.

Cora's .500 winning % ties him for 24th among Sox all-time managers (out of 46), along with Pete Runnels. and hall of famers Bucky Harris and Cy Young.

Pinch-hitting in the 4th inning sounds a little bit early, even for such an experienced batter as Workman. That's Cora thinking outside the box again.

So the Sox will stick it through with Cora as manager for four seasons before eventually replacing him with Nick Punto for half of one.

As a side note, take a look at Cora's and Punto's stats. HRs (Cora) and SB (Punto) aside, they were essentially the same player.

Both of these guys had ABs of consequence for the Red Sox. That is a truly depressing thought.
