Mayo had to go. I was hoping that he would improve as the season went on, but it was abundantly clear that he wasn't ready in any way, shape, or form. Maybe in a few years after he gained experience, but I'm betting that will never happen in NE.

That said, if he had been retained, we're probably looking at at least one or two more wasted seasons even with a number 1 pick. With a number 4, pick, you still have an opportunity to trade down for a few more players. We need to get Kevin Costner in the FO so he can call that waffle-eating GM to give us a slew of number 1 picks.

Mayo showed no ability to grow. I was mixed about the hire but glad he's gone.

What’s that quote, I think originally about Bear Bryant: “He can beat you with his guys, or he can beat you with your guys.”?

Mayo is the opposite of that.

Years ago, I asked my then GF (who was a professional symphony conductor) which would sound better: a top conductor with a mediocre orchestra or a top orchestra with a mediocre conductor? Without hesitation, she said “the former.” Now her ego might have been speaking to it, but she was a lot closer to a mediocre conductor at the time.

I think that was Bum Phillips.

Mayo is just terrible. Maybe he grows into a good head coach, but we don't have time to wait. Or at least I'm not interested in waiting.

Edit: It was Phillips talking about Bryant!

#1 pick. You can always fire a coach, you can't always get a #1 pick. Especially since I think the Krafts are just going to plug in Vrabel and hope it works.

#1 pick and fire Mayo in 2026. Easily.

Especially with Wolf not being fired now (apparently), I'd rather have a new GM in 2026 pick the new coch.

I voted #4 and new coach. I understand that giving Mayo another year might have been an option to see if he could grow, but all signs pointed to he was in over his head and needs to spend more time as a not-head coach to gain experience. I hope he has a great career as a coach if that is what he wants to do.

Vrabel's team seems to be working hard on the image polishing. This this excellent (and very flattering) article ran in the Athletic yesterday. It made me soften on the view that Vrabel will just be another hard-ass, pain-in-the-ass types who no one will want to work with (see BB). Seems like he might be a good combination of experience, ego, intelligence to be an excellent candidate.

Over the last five months, The Athletic spent extensive time with Vrabel as he worked for the Browns, and worked to create a vision for what his next head-coaching job would look like. He reflected on his time with the Titans, particularly the day it ended, and sized up what he believes is an inaccurate perception many around the league hold of him: a hard-ass, and hard to work with. It’s a challenge to overcome, though it won’t change Vrabel.
“I do love what I heard one time,” Vrabel said: “What somebody thinks of me is none of my business.”
