I noticed Varitek in uniform at the beginning. Does anyone know what his "special assistant" duties include? He might be able to help the pitching staff, if he were allowed to, given his reputation for rigorous preparation for opposing pitchers during his career as catcher.

OMG OMG OMG ... Rich Hill now set for his first appearance for the Dodgers since the trade, starting on Wednesday!

Does he make the start?
Does he make it past the first inning? The first out? The first batter? The first pitch?

David Ross just brought his OPS up to about .800 with a run scoring double a lot like the big hit he got in game 5. It wasn't a "ground rule" double though. Ross maybe should rethink retirement.

Any word on why Paps didn't land somewhere? I thought for sure some team would've taken a flyer on him...

Rich Hill: 6IP, 1H, 2BB, 8K.

Forever tantalizing. It's got to be frustrating for him, to show this kind of ability at his age but never having been able to put it all together for one full season, let alone multiple ones.

Probably not as frustrating as knowing he could have been pitching like this all along.

Though even that is likely alleviated by the knowledge that he's looking at a payday for next year.

The Chris Smith who pitched 4 great innings of mop up last night is a 35 year old former Red Sox fringe prospect. He debuted with a cup of coffee for Boston in 2006, and has had four short major league stints over 12 full pro seasons. Perseverance.

Anybody been watching Anthony Ranaudo be about as bad as possible? How does he keep getting chances to start?

There
Oh, Daisuke...

Since coming back to Japan he's been hurt and or/terrible, but finally got a chance to pitch on Sunday. It was his first appearance for a big-league Japanese club in 10 years, since before going to MLB. It didn't go well. He came on to pitch the 8th for the defending champ Softbank Hawks, down 2-0. He walked the first guy he faced on 4 pitches, before hitting the next two guys with his next two pitches, loading the bases. Then he walked the next guy. In the end he gave up 5 R but only 2 ER given the hit batsmen and a wild pitch. He faced 10 batters, striking out the final two, who I can only assume felt sorry for him and swung and missed on purpose. 1 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 2 HBP, 5 R, 2 ER, 2 K.

If you scroll down to the bottom of the 8th on this link, there's a couple videos of him. His first pitch, and then later a single off him.

"FanRag Sports' Jon Heyman writes that Yoenis Cespedes "plans to exercise his opt-out clause shortly after the World Series."
No surprise on that front, as Cespdes should be able to do better on the free agent market than the two years and $47.5 million remaining on his current contract. Adam Rubin of ESPN had reported as much shortly after the end of the regular season. Rubin colleague Buster Olney relayed last week that the Mets do not feel a sense of urgency when it comes to re-signing the 31-year-old outfielder. It isn't yet known what teams plan on gunning for Cespedes this offseason."

Passing up a fair amount of guaranteed money, but his second consecutive 30+HR season and a very weak free agent field he should get a significant amount more as a FA.

How clever of the Mets to put that opt-out clause in the contract. They must be stoked.
