Not to take away from this discussion, but I'm curious about the upcoming state of the 40-man roster, and whether hoarding all the prospects for next year is even possible. I don't quite know who needs to go on the 40-man next year in order to not be lost, but I imagine the current guys on the bubble are:

-Doubront
-Carp
-Lavarnway
-Britton
-Butler
-Wilson
-Hassan
-Brentz
-Wright
-Layne (? I completely missed that they added this guy. Seems interesting, at least)

I'm sure they can retain most, but not all these guys for next year. I'm guessing Barnes will probably have to be added, but I really have no idea. Do Owens/Swihart/Marrero/Johnson/Coyle need to be added? How much crowding (if any) are we looking at for next year? I know someone if bored enough or hates their job enough to find this answer for me.

Barnes, Swihart and Coyle need to be added. Owens, Marrero and Johnson do not.

Awesome, thanks. Any other obvious guys who the Red Sox would want to add?

If that's it, then it seems like the Red Sox could do just fine hoarding more low minors prospects, but might not have much flexibility to take on guys closer to, but maybe not yet ready for MLB (ie, future Brock Holts) in a deadline deal.

Split out from the Deadline Discussion and Daubach is My Binky thread. I think it deserves a separate discussion.

40-man slots

Definites (barring trade or horrific injury):
8 pitchers - Lackey, Buchholz, Rubby, Workman, Tazawa, Mujica (ugh), Webster, Ranaudo, Barnes,
13 position players - Ortiz, Pedroia, Napoli, Victorino, Nava, Bogaerts, Bradley, Betts, Vazquez, Holt, Cecchini, Coyle, Swihart

Maybes
3 pitchers -Wilson, Doubront, Britton
5 position players-Brentz, Lavarnway, Middlebrooks, Herrera, Carp

Probably Not
- Layne
- Hassan?

Assuming gone:
-Peavy, Badenhop, Miller, Uehara, Ross, Gomes, Breslow, Drew, LESTER

On the bubble (soxprospects ranking):
Celestino, De La Cruz, Diaz(18), Perkins, Ramirez(23), Ramos(24), Shaw(19), Torres, Villareal, Younginer

25-man
C Vazquez, ?
1B Napoli, Carp
2B Pedroia
SS Bogaerts
3B Holt/?
LF ?/Nava
CF Bradley/?
RF Victorino/?
DH Papi
UT Herrera

SP Lackey
SP Buchholz
SP Rubby
SP ?
SP ?

RP Tazawa
RP Workman
RP Mujica
RP Doubront?
RP ?
RP ?
RP ?

I'm throwing some assumptions in there that one could definitely argue with. I'm hoping they resign Miller and Uehara. I think Doubront's probably run out of chances. Maybe (fairly or unfairly) Middlebrooks too. Unless one of Ranaudo/Webster/Workman come up and dominate in the 2nd half I think they start 2015 in AAA.
So that's 29 spots accounted for with the definites and maybes, and they need at least 3 relievers, a backup (or starting) C, a quality LF, a CF capable OF, and at least one average SP. That's 36, and doesn't leave much room for many of the bubble guys, as they'll need some additional backups in AAA. I think they'd probably lose Ramirez, Diaz, and possibly Shaw if they don't clear some stuff out in trade. I think it's use it or lose it time for a bunch of these guys.

Bump so someone who's less lazy than I am can update how Escobar and Hembree will fit in. Both were on the Giants' 40-man.

Immediately, the Sox have only 39 players on the 40-man roster, and just lost another.  So no additional move is needed at this time.

And, if they can't free up a spot ahead of the 7/31 trade deadline, I imagine they'll probably either DFA Alex Wilson or Lavarnway whenever Ryan's finished his rehab and looking to be reinstated from the 60-day DL.

Figured it's time to bring this thread back with all the changes... looks like the Red Sox have two spots open on the 40 man roster, unless I'm missing something...

40:

There's some definite DFA/waiver possibilities here, specifically in Carp, Johnson, Breslow and Mujica - although there's no immediate need to move them for the roster space.

The 25 man is less clear...

Vazquez, Napoli, Pedroia, Bogaerts, Middlebrooks, Ortiz, Craig, Bradley, Cespedes, Holt, Nava, Ross = 12 position players

Buchholz, Uehara, Tazawa, Badenhop = 4 pitchers who are here pretty much no matter what

After that, one or two of the following: Victorino (DL?), Carp, Betts, Johnson, Cecchini, Brentz, Herrera, Hassan

And seven or eight of the remaining pitchers: Kelly, Workman, Ranaudo, Webster, De La Rosa, Breslow, Mujica, Britton, Escobar, Hembree, Layne, Wilson, Wright
