I've heard there's a few retailers on the list that they won't including East Coast TV and Abe's of Maine, mainly because they're not authorized retailers, which is the reason they're willing to go below Samsung's price floor. That said, if they were to do $1800 or $1850 for the PN60F8500 rather than the $2400 list (about $150-200) above the cheapest online retailer's 'list price', I'd pull the trigger to avoid the hassle.NortheasternPJ said:
Crutchfield is offering the 8500 series at 60 inches right now for 2400 with a free sound bar and subwoofer, plus their unlimited tech support. If you want to upgrade the sound bar and subwoofer they'll still take 250 off. Also, not a benefit to me because I live in Virginia but if you live outside VA no sales tax. I'm deep in decision mode. I'd like to stay closer to $2k than $3K. I don't know much about these online companies or the matching prices, so the 64" 8500 is looking like its out of reach. Probably not heading to BestBuy tonight, so I hope to knock this out by the weekend. Any advice is welcome. Looking for 60"-65" in the neighborhood of $2K. I want it to be a top notch sport watching TV. Movies, etc, are secondary.
Just looked at the 5300 review. That sounds like the one. We have an xbox1 so smart isn't needed, and I don't care about 3D. The picture quality gets a good review, that's the main thing I needed. Buzzing sounds up close? I'm going to be 12' away.

If you have the correct lighting, I'd go with 5300 and save the 1000 bucks.
The room is dark. Not much natural light in at all. That's what I read as well...That it didn't handle a bright room very well but is good in darker settings.
Decided to save some money and got the 5300 today. Thought it looks great I'm having some trouble adjusting the setting to get the colors right. First, everything had an orange tone and faces especially looked reddish-orange or purplish. Now, it's better but the colors are a little grayish/greenish. Anyway, I was hoping someone with the 5300 could share their settings or provide a link of settings they've used.

Can't be the cables - they're the same ones I used with my previous tv and they worked great. The panel could have a problem I guess but I am encouraged that when I change the settings the picture and colors change with them. My wife agreed that the original setting gave all white people a reddish hue. She now thinks it's fine but I think everyone looks a little greenish/yellow. I'm sure I'm just a small adjustment or two from better.

On modern sets the interactions between settings (many of which are unintuitive) make trying to 'improve' things simply via eye very unlikely to succeed.
FIRST RULE, which I suspect you may already have violated: WRITE DOWN ALL SETTINGS FROM THE FACTORY BEFORE YOU START MESSING WITH ANYTHING !!.
Because: Sets have individual variations but are calibrated at the factory to a 'standard' In theory, all sets out-of-the-box are therefore quite similar, but the underlying settings of each to obtain this differ. Improvement to a more natural look, involves resetting based on this calibration, so the improvement settings involve changing these settings relative to your particular set's initial calibration. That is 3 clicks + from your initial setting or -5 clicks on some other setting. Most brands/sets do NOT have a "reset everything to how it shipped" button. Once you start messing with these settings, you can't restore them unless you wrote them all down before you started.
Rule 2: AVS Forums always have settings from pro calibrators which most often will work well with 90% of the shipping TVs. The above thread is 22 pages long..read it from beining to end before you go back to messing with the TV.

Also, I didn't write down the factory settings but, at least, I have a pretty good idea of what they were should I need to return to them. At this point, it's probably best for me to take some time away from the picture - it could be that I'm simply too nit-picky right now especially after focusing on this for the better part of the last seven hours.

For others, the threads at AVS Forum imply the last Samsung version of the 64" 5300 series.. the PN64H5300 (nor the F) actually are using a variation of the more advanced 8300 series panel... which means an inherently better set...though they may have significant implications for tuning it for better results. So it pays to figure out exactly what's still out there being sold...
Most new plasmas don't need to be broken in as rigurously as early generations, but I've still found that the colors and saturation on a plasma continue to change when first unboxed. I wouldn't worry too much about the settings Ribo until you're about 100 hours in.

Absolutely true if you're going to actually calibrate, if you're just using derived settings to improve a set, it doesn't matter when you do the fiddling... you'll wind up at the same place after break in.
