Oh boy.

Edit: I appreciate DCL going into full complaining mode about the quality of the cross before realizing it went in the net.

The 718
Everton are the first to beat a Super League team!

Game was pretty dire. Neither side created much. Arteta was hopping mad after a penalty on Richarlison was waved off on another hairsplitting VAR offside, but the "foul" was a joke and Ceballos could have been booked for a dive.

Brighton-esque inability to finish today for Liverpool after Salah's opening goal. Entertaining so far but so many wasted chances... has a late NUFC equalizer written all over it

Alisson having to come up big here a couple of times. Barcodes have a goal in them.

Wow, as an Arsenal supporter I am happy for Joe Willock. I have always enjoyed watching him, pretty dynamic in the midfield.

In the reality, though, I can’t help but think that he is simply going to help Kroenke balance his checkbook with a sale to Newcastle this summer, and that is a little depressing. I know it helps the team, but I am so down on Kroenke that I have conflicting feelings on the profitability of the team.

Mourinho-Spurs-esque.

This has been the least enjoyable season in a long time for a variety of reasons. Without the Super League bullshit I’d probably be angry right now. Because of that, though, I just don’t give a fuck.

I'm watching Union Berlin and Werder Bremen. They announced that Union is spending 3 weeks in quarantine as a team, which started just after their last match at Dortmund. It's not clear to me if this is precautionary, especially after cross-town Hertha having 3 consecutive games postponed due to an outbreak, or if it was something that was mandated. Given the increasing restrictions in place here in Germany (for example, our first official curfews started at midnight last night, but last from 10pm to 5am going forward - the law just took affect officially on Saturday), it's not surprising they are affecting the Bundesliga as well.

Willock would actually help that ARsenal team on the pitch right now...

I don't care about the result either but it did spark question here in the house. How long can a referee let the game go beyond the "official" time before people start asking questions? Does a team have grounds to protest if there is excessive time given? I mean this loss of two points may be what keeps Pool of the CL.

Liverpool lost that match long before extra time with wastefulness and complacency. The two points I’d really bitch about losing were the Everton match where Pickford ended Van Dijk’s season and VAR made a mockery of the winner.

Union Berlin is up 2-0 3-0 on Werder Bremen after two quick goals a hat trick from Pohjanpalo. This sets up a very interesting final run for the upstarts. They're sitting 1 point behind Leverkuesen for 6th if this holds. Leverkusen plays 4th place Frankfurt still tonight.

Union's final three games are against Wolfsburg (3rd), Leverkusen (6th) and RB Leipzig (2nd). They will definitely have earned their way into Europe if they can manage this...4th is mathematically impossible, and 5th is basically there too. The race for 6th could be intense. But can someone explain if I should be rooting for any of the remaining DFP Pokal teams: Dortmund (5th), Holstein Kiel (2nd division), Werder Bremen (14th) and RB Leipzig (2nd). I think Union would be in a play-in position for Europa if they finish 6th, but would Dortmund finishing 5th and winning the Pokal change that for them?

Edit: ah crap, looks like 6th gets the Conference League this year :( though I guess my question about Dortmund and the Pokal could help.

Edit 2: It sounds like there are 10,000 fans shouting outside the stadium.

Hell, they did this same shit last week against Leeds. If you can’t bury your chances, this is what happens in the EPL.

Looks like the entire league is quarantining til the end of the season.

Bundesliga clubs will move into mandatory quarantine for the final two rounds of the season as a preventative measure against any further fixture postponements due to COVID-19.
The German Football League (DFL) confirmed the measures on Thursday. The new protocols see the players and staff from the 18 Bundesliga clubs have their movements restricted from May 2, and then placed into closed training camps for from May 12.
Down in the 2.B, Holstein Kiel missed a bunch of games for covid. Came back with a win today, still have something like 5 games in the next 15 days or something crazy like that. They're on the heels of Hamburg, a huge club that was cruising toward promotion for much of the season but has had a crap month (including a loss to Sandhausen a couple days ago) and now find themselves fighting for the playoff (3rd) spot.

They didn’t look like winning this match anyway, but that decision is simply stunning. VAR is an absolute shambles.
That was a ludicrous decision. Your foot is going to raise up off the ground when you make that kind of clearance, such that your studs have to be raised somewhat by definition, and if the opponent happens to put his leg in the exact trajectory of said foot at the exact right time there is not much you can do about contacting him with them.

It was just one of those awkward things that happen in football. Of course VAR is so useless that it can't even get something like this right.

Just an awful awful call. You can’t red someone for successfully kicking a clearance. It’s not even a yellow. Yes, Chilwell could have been hurt but it’s just one of those things

As a grubby defender, I’ll tell you that’s on Chilwell. A couple years ago I earned a cracked shin guard and egg-sized lump by closing down recklessly. Ref rightly whistled me for it.

Players have to have space to follow through. If Chilwell did that to a keeper, it’s a no doubt card on Chilwell. How is this different?

It's in their DNA at this point

It also took about one minute to review the Wilson goal that was nullified, I can't believe there are folks taking issue with the amount of extra time given. Some of the chances in the first half (Mane's when he dribbled into Dubravka, Salah on his right foot) were easier to score than miss. It isn't a squad that's earned a UCL place by a long shot at this point - I'm just holding out hope that the ESL clubs get banned from UEFA competitions for a year outright just to save them the reps.

Maupay and Welbeck have robbed my guy Alireza Jahanbakhsh of two assists. Maupay's miss in particular was dreadful

I saw it a little differently in that Balbuena directed his follow-through to (a) send a message and/or (b) leave a mark. It was not a natural follow through.
However, it was disguised well enough that I couldn't have given any color card for it.

If you set the over/under of number of goals Burnley can score in one training session at 3.5, I’m taking the under.

What the fuck, Wolves?

Has there ever been a bigger coaching mismatch in a cup final then Pep Guardiola vs. Ryan Mason?

Spurs team: Lloris (C), Aurier, Alderweireld, Dier, Reguilon, Højbjerg, Winks, Lo Celso, Lucas, Son, Kane.

Surprised to see Winks starting over Ndombele and Bale on the bench.

Spurs have already made it longer without conceding than they did in their last cup final.
