I can't tell if "Mike" has become a SoSH meme, or if people really don't know that he is a different person.

Or that some people forget that he came up as Mike before he asked that people use his actual name

Mike is what his family calls him and what he was drafted as.  It's not a different person.  He switched to Giancarlo his third year in the league.

I have absolutely no idea why I used Mike. I really can't believe that I did it. I'm losing it.

Which isn't significant. That's the 10th "fastest" home run he's hit this season, and doesn't even crack the league's top 100 this season.

Impressive for an opposite field home run, though.

Do you guys know why he switched to Giancarlo for his professional name? I always assumed his family called him that.
IIRC it started in elementary school. His teachers couldn't pronounce Giancarlo so he just had them starting calling him Mike.

EDIT: I realize that doesn't answer your question but his actual name is Giancarlo and it's a pretty funny story.

He hit it opposite field off a curveball.  It's got to be easier to pull for speed off the bat and to hit a fastball for speed off the bat.

It was an impressive HR, made more impressive bc it was opposite field.  BUT... the most impressive HR I have ever seen was when the Sox had Wily Mo Pena.  It was a home game and he absolutely CRUSHED a pitch.  I've never seen a ball leave so quickly - it was like it had no arc.  I remember Jerry Remy that night laughed for two innings bc someone in the monster seats looked like he was thinking about catching it but pulled his hand back; the ball absolutely slammed the wall behind the seats.

I don't remember what team they were playing and a quick google search didn't yield me any results... but if anyone else saw it you knlw what I am talking about.  That guy was an absolute beast.  I always wanted to go watch him at batting practice.

I remember that home run perfectly. I don't remember any of the surrounding details but, oh man, it would've taken that guy's head off if he tried to catch it. I think it's highest point was when it hit the wall behind the seats, and it was probably still rising.

The wrong side of the bridge....
The trajectory on that thing is insane. Off the bat it looks like your basic line drive double down the line, or maybe even a single if the RF gets a good jump and cuts it off. No way it looks like it has enough loft to clear the fence. Wow.

He hit it opposite field off a looping Zito-esque curveball event. I can't think of anyone else outside of Vlad Guerrero who would hit a ball pitched like that, that hard and that fast

If Wily Mo Pena could make contact with a curveball, he could hit it that hard and that fast.
