With a decision on Greg Hardy’s playing statusimminent, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell might have thought he tied up all his domestic violence loose ends.
So naturally, another one is about to fray.
According to Mike Morris of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, attorney Gloria Allred has called a 3 p.m. press conference where she’ll discuss alleged incidents of abuse by another NFL player.
Allred said in a statement she would be joined by “two individuals who allege that they or a family member were victims of violence and abuse by an NFL player,” and that those two would “discuss how the NFL and Commissioner Goodell failed them.”
There was no information about the identity of the people who’d be talking, or who the player was.
You can practically hear the puckering in New York now.

Something like 25% of all women experience domestic violence at some point.  It is especially prevalent among the demographic that would be most attached to NFL players (women aged 20-25).  Which is to say that I wouldn't be surprised if there are a bunch more of these cases that are under or un-reported and we are just seeing the tip of the iceberg.

However, the negative of this attention is that I feel people will likely become a story of NFL criminals instead of the wider issues in our society.  Now, it may be that NFL players abuse their partners more than the general population, I don't know.  I just think that people will spend an awful lot of time opining about the nature of the sport and its connection to abuse instead of getting to the real story.

That said, I am on board with the NFL having a low tolerance policy if they want to be thought leaders and change agents on this.

Yeah if he swept something under the rug and they have some hard evidence, RG is pretty much gone.

Based on what?  He's completely fucked up badly, with many people calling for his head, yet every single owner who has spoken out has been nothing but supportive.

Good news for the NFL. Gloria Allred's arrival usually signifies that a scandal has almost played out.
I was just going to say when this clown shows up you know the end is near. She's a vulture looking for scraps.

Hopefully we can get another comedy video out of this press conference, like the time she jacked off a baseball bat in front of that family that went to the Braves game.

Maybe, but even the owners will have to bend to public opinion at some point.

I'm not one out for Roger's head, but the thought of a Condi Rice commissionership makes me very happy.  I'd just prefer it under better circumstances.

Would she invade the CFL despite no evidence of wrongdoing and no provocation?

Wow, that's terrible (the ~25% part). This is a good post. There is an opportunity here to use the NFL example to shine light on - which hopefully leads to a positive change in - an epidemic problem in our society in general. Like you said, I hope that is what comes of it, as opposed to seeing this as just a NFL problem.

Has any owner spoken in the past 24-48 hours since sponsors have began getting involved with statements/threats and/or taking action as some have? Once this snowball turns into an avalanche and threatens the owners bottom line you will see the support for RG end.

Nah, the CFL shares the NFL's footballish way of life. MLS would get the %^&$ bombed out of it though.

It looks to me like they have some evidence that Goodell essentially blew them off. Any other time this might slip past, but right now I don't think he can weather a storm like that.

It's not the opinion of the public they care about, it's the growing negative opinion of sponsors that could cause owners to desert Goodell.  Major corporations have no allegiance to Roger.

I can picture her last week, talking to her minions. "Find me a case, and find me a case NOW. It's time to grandstand on this cause under the guise of helping people."

From her website:

"Gloria Allred is the most famous woman attorney practicing law in the nation today, a tireless and successful advocate..."

I couldn't even finish.
I bet she wrestled with how to write that. Do I include the words "one of" or just add "woman" and declare myself #1.

So the woman speaking isn't the victim?  I missed a couple of minutes and am so confused.

Friend of the main victim (girlfriend), though this girl says she was a victim herself.
