I will root for Tom Brady no matter what he does. Except for when he is playing the Patriots. I have no idea how any Patriot fan could ever be mad at him. Especially if you remember the Sullivan era.

The same goes for Belichick. I can't really get upset at him for not signing a 43 year old QB to a multi-year contract north of $30 a year. Even if he is the GOAT. Assuming that is what TB will get.

I look forward to welcoming Tom back to NE when he is done playing.

I can't find it in myself to be sad over this. He gave New England football fans two of the greatest decades any fandom could wish to have, an unparalleled number of championships and huge games, and now he's going to be paid exceptionally in his last couple years and get to live it out in, frankly, a much better offensive environment for another franchise starved for success. I don't think the Patriots could have fielded a SB contender paying him 30 million per year so it would have been more of last year which I don't think Brady or the fans would have enjoyed.

This is gonna suck to watch but getting a generational QB twice in a row is really rare and I think NE had the best one for longer than any other franchise got. I think everyone made the responsible, if tough, deciison here.

Never mind, I found the official dumbest take on this. Christ is Volin thick as pigshit.
They don’t call him Trollin’ Volin for nothing. On a side note, the only good part about the rebuilding process is that it’s going to be hilarious if the team is bad for 3-4 years and all of these media dip shits lose their jobs because people don’t care and don’t watch/read their drivel.

We don't know is that's what he'll get or even if that's what he wanted in order to stay.

Brady is the GOAT and he deserved to be treated the way Kobe was treated by the Lakers even if the next 2 years would be rough.

I bet the only time Belichick and Brady talk for the next 10 years will be at Brady's HOF introduction. That would be a huge bummer.

So he played a good 10yrs below market value but because he finally decided he wanted closer to market value that tarnishes his story? Are you fucking kidding me. Not to mention we don't even know if NE offered him a contract at all at this point. They aren't exactly flush with cap space right now.

Brady probably realized that with the weapons he had in NE regardless of what he did it was going to appear he was hitting the cliff because Bill has shit the bed when it comes to the draft the last few seasons and now that is coming home to roost.
He was going to hit a cliff eventually anyway, though. That's just father time. How well is going to fare with a whole new group of people he hasn't played with? I mean, the best I can see out if all of this is he's going down that cliff with a different team. But I'd honestly rather lose 2 more years here with Brady than see him in another uniform. He should have retired on the field in a Pats uniform.

I wouldn't be lie this I'd it was pretty much anyone else but him and Big Papi. They're not just regular athletes to us.

I will say.... Brady has made Belichick's job MUCH easier. He's covered up for a lot of flaws. Now we will see just how good Belichick REALLY is.

For what it's worth...

With Cle: 36-44
With NE: 237-83
With NE minus Brady: 19-19

2000-2001: 5-13
2008: 11-5
2016: 3-1
TOT: 19-19

Everything just sucks right now. I know sports pales in comparison to what is going on in the world but this is icing on the cake.

I am out if my mind as well, absolutely. This is a guiy punch. But tha'ts not what my take is. Part of what I loved about him was that he was willing to put salary aside for the game. And again, totally my fault for believing that. I actually feel a bit silly. But this shatters that illusion.
He did set his salary aside. For two decades and 6 rings. He deserves zero criticism. From anybody. Ever.

For real. What the heck is wrong with a few of you?

Amazing run and I’m curious about how the next chapter plays out. Would love to see TB with an array of legit NFL-caliber skill players for his last few years in the league.

LOL at any Pats fan badmouthing Brady. I'm guessing none of you are older than 30+ years old and don't remember the Sullivan era.

that being said, this seemed inevitable. BB does what he thinks is best for the team now and long-term and rarely has he let a guy go and seen that player flourish. Brady was pretty bad last year, OL and lack of weapons notwithstanding. I have no idea what the "plan" is at QB this year or next. I thought Fitzmagic was going to be the guy, but he is locked in in Miami.

I'm done with football for a while. If TB12 isn't under center, I really don't give a fuck if it's Stidham, Dalton or Nick fucking Foles. I also would have given him a blank check because that's what you do for the person responsible for taking you from a joke to the greatest dynasty in history, so I view this far differently than the team did. I love Bill, but I don't show up to watch him coach - at least not in the way we watch players, obviously.

You're a clown.
You spoiled fucks....

Time to find out who the real Patriots fans are

Best of luck on the new teams. Thanks for everything for 20 years - best run in sports. This day was coming this year or next.

I think it’s a mistake for Tom - but it lets the pats start to rebuild quicker. Be fun to see what it looks like in post tom Brady world.

No no no no.

Gotta keep the train rolling, no one man is above it. This isn’t the NBA, teams can’t just overcome years worth of shitty decisions and become title contenders in one Summer.

This is like the opposite of "besides that how was the play Mrs. Lincoln?" Volin sucks so much

This is sad and I was in the "pay him anything to keep him even if it doesn't make fiscal sense" camp because he's Tom Brady but I'm fine with this too. He's earned the right to do whatever he wants and I'll cheer for him except against the Pats

And then he didn't finish the job. I'm fine with my take. Maybe in a few years when he's retired, I'll forget all about it. But right now, he's the bad guy. And he chose it.

Yes. Why is it ok to play for less money his whole career but now it's all about that might dollar? I mean, my fault for actually believing he was above such things, don't get me wrong. But this really tarnishes his story for me.
And why didn't he return any of your letters!?

He finished the job about 3 different times, what are you talking about? He gave everything a player can ever possibly give to one franchise, why is the onus solely on Brady to stay?

There's no bad guy here. Pats and Brady both did what they thought was in their best interest. I'll root for him so long as it doesn't hurt the Pats, and I look forward to seeing what BB does next.

Honestly, I’m glad, and this is why I’m forever grateful to have Belichick and Kraft. It was time - Brady has been in clear decline and other teams want to pay him like he’s elite. The team does not have the cap space to give him enough support to win as a good, not great, QB, and so the right call has been made.

It’s been an honor, you all.

Now let’s go do it again.
Clear decline? I mean he was the MVP a couple of years ago. I get he wasn’t going to win an MVP award again, but he 100% was and is still good enough to win a SB.
The offensive weapons were much more the problem last year.

Odd way to spin that. You could say that the Pats told Brady to tell them what he wanted, money/contract length, and he didn't let them know. That take from Curran is mealy mouthed garbage.
"The intimation" means the Patriots weren't explicit in telling Brady he should come to them with his terms, just that they exepcted him to.

The logical part of me has known for a long time this was coming - you don’t structure a contract that allows you to be a FA for the first time in your career if you don’t want to go anywhere... But wow it stings to actually see it. There isn’t another athlete who has contributed so much joy to fandom as Brady, and I’m not sure it’s close. I really don’t understand some of the anger expressed by a few posters here. I hope he throws for 5000 yards and 50 TDs with Tampa next year.

In retrospect I think everyone knew what the deal was going to be when they paid Brady all that extra money and gave him no franchise.

It was the most perplexing move. In hindsight it makes complete sense and I think we have just been in denial for months.

Thanks for the memories, Tom. Six Lombardy trophies , GOAT at your position, and forever a Patriot. Well, except maybe for the next few years....depending on your next decision. Anyway, thank you. Sincerely.

Why am I not surprised that a poster with a long history of bad takes has the worst possible take on this?

Anyways, if you go back and watch Brady's press conference after the Titans playoff loss, it's pretty clear that he wanted to come back, but was uncertain if the Pats would want him. I pointed it out at the time and it's even clearer now that this has actually happened. I think we have our answer.
