Yes. Why is it ok to play for less money his whole career but now it's all about that might dollar? I mean, my fault for actually believing he was above such things, don't get me wrong. But this really tarnishes his story for me.
Are you five years old. Get the fuck out of here with this garbage. Tom Brady doesn’t owe any of us jack shit.

No no no no.

Gotta keep the train rolling, no one man is above it. This isn’t the NBA, teams can’t just overcome years worth of shitty decisions and become title contenders in one Summer.
Train will be rolling to 6 - 10. Check out the schedule.

Teams literally go from bad to good in the NFL every year. That is what made the Pats dynasty so impressive. It's the easiest sport to rebuild in but the hardest to keep it going.

Brady deserved more from the Patriots organization.

The fact that folks are bad-mouthing Tom Brady in any way is absolutely amazing. Utterly amazing.
Is it really that amazing? The cornerstone of the franchise just left the team, and (apparently) for a big contract, when we've grown accustomed to him taking reduced pay for the expressed purpose of winning championships here. It's not abnormal for some fans to be salty at the moment. It's a very emotional time for Pats' fans, and this is on top of everything that's going on in society.

I'm not saying it's right. But it's not really "amazing". Not to me, anyway.

Sadness aside, Belichick is a cold motherfucker. Kinda love that.
I was watching the Bledsoe E60 last night and BB said he always does what is best for the team. That is why all that being forced to trade Jimmy by Kraft was so laughable.
BB must think this is the best for the future of the Pats.
I am all-in for a rebuild. Would be beyond pissed with a guy like Dalton

I'm weirdly not devastated. Guess I could see it coming, and I agree with those who say there are no bad guys here.

The fact that we're currently living in this weird state of suspended animation also makes it seem sort of abstract. I'm sure there'll be a wave of sadness when the season rolls around and he's not here.

Yes. Because I guess I always think people won't be assholes.

I can easily argue that the 14-6 record once the Patriot Way was built means A LOT more than the 5-13.
I agree with this. He was taking over a crap team in 2000. I think BB is the greatest of all time, Brady or no. Though obviously Brady makes his job a LOT easier.

My guess is that there are maybe, maybe, three posters in all of SoSH land who are upset with Brady, and that these are people who aren't happy about anything and have never learned how to process difficult news (mother didn't hug them, dad was drunk, whatever). Let's all agree to ignore them because the rest of us are better than that.

I don't get being mad at Brady or BB. The last 20 years don't happen without BOTH of them. I'm 46 and I've been a Patriots fan for as long as I can remember, heading out to Bryant college every year to watch camp and collect autographs. I love Tom Brady. Tom Fucking Brady. He's a goddamn legend. And so is BB. It was time to move on. Nostalgia is for fans, not for parties directly involved.

This team wasn't winning a Super Bowl with or without Brady this year. Keeping him for nostalgia, at the detriment of the future, isn't how BB is wired. The breakup was inevitable. I just feel incredibly fortunate to have been able to watch and appreciate the last 20 years.

Odd way to spin that. You could say that the Pats told Brady to tell them what he wanted, money/contract length, and he didn't let them know. That take from Curran is mealy mouthed garbage.
Brady could also have seen that (correctly, IMO) as a set up, in the sense that they would probably use his "ask" in a negative way if they didn't want to meet his terms.

Free agency means that Brady was in the position to dictate the terms of his decision. The Patriots declined to participate. Honestly, I can't kill them for that decision, but I sure as hell can't fault Brady for making a decision not to return either.

He finished the job about 3 different times, what are you talking about? He gave everything a player can ever possibly give to one franchise, why is the onus solely on Brady to stay?
I feel like I explained it fairly well. I never said it was rational, either. He's not a regular player. The majority of his fans won't think rationally about it either.

He finished the job six times. Six pack of rings spanning two decades.
And the fans stuck with him through deflategate. Like I said man, I fully admit this is gut punch reactionary, but I'm not going to be the only one. Not everything in sports is rational. This is a shitty day in a shitty year and holding onto (admittedly stupid) ideas that this one guy was above it all helped. I wanted to see him walk off the field in a Pats uniform. I think that would have completed the perfect story here. And I think it sucks. I'd it helps, also fuck the pats for not paying up.

Put me in the ride or die with Brady camp to push the dynasty as long as possible until the wheels fell off... the NFL has pissed me off too much over the last 5 years to stick around for an average team.

He’s not worth 30 mil for what he is now. Love him and he’s the goat but it’s time to move on
This pretty much says it all. None of us wanted the dream to end because it's been such a great ride but all things considered, this isn't s bad time or way to end things. And for a lot of us - myself included - he's our favorite Boston sports athlete ever so his return to Gillette with whoever is gonna be an amazing moment

This is disappointing, but not shocking. Tom's idol, Joe Montana, went to the Chiefs to prove that he could win outside of SF. Tom's friend, Peyton Manning, had a great second act in Denver. A guy who has always had a chip on his shoulder and something to prove had nothing left to prove in New England. He owes us as fans nothing, beyond the thank you and farewell that he has already issued. I wish him all the best in Tampa. He made a completely putrid offensive roster look competent for a decent chunk of last season. Our adjustment is going to be harsh.

Honestly, I'm more disappointed for my 8-year-old son than I am more myself. He took Mookie leaving fairly well, because I had all offseason to prep him for it. I had warned him that Brady might leave, but still thought it was more likely than not that he stayed. I hadn't had a chance to warn him that odds were dropping as the Patriots devoted cap space to other players in the past few days. Now, there is no Mookie, he doesn't have multiple regular life things that he enjoys that have been disrupted (school, family visits, etc.), and now there's no Brady.

On the plus side, at least this happened before Sunday Ticket renewed.

The 99 team was 8-8 (not complete crap and it had a “franchise” QB).
I love what BB has done, but no way is he the GOAT without Brady. He gets all the credit for sticking with Brady.
I could be wrong, but if Bledsoe never gets hurt, I highly doubt the Pats have 6 titles. So I can’t call BB the GOAT.

I’m having difficulty being angry at anyone involved. I understand the perspectives of Brady, Bill, and Kraft.
Can’t be mad at anyone. Bill has always prioritized the long term health of the franchise. If he feels it’s time to move on, then it’s time to move on. Brady should do whatever he wants. He’s a legend and should decide how it ends for him. And thank god Kraft has seemingly stayed out of the way. Forcing BB to sign Brady would have likely seen BB leave too.

Bill saw that it was time to rebuild and moved on from a 43 year old QB. Kraft being the best owner in sports let him. And Tom will carry on line a pro somewhere else. This amazing journey had come to it's end, and we were privileged to enjoy it. There will never be a dynasty like this one thanks to those 3.

Well every all-time great coach has had hall of fame quarterbacks:

Belichick - Brady
Walsh - Montana
Lombardi - Starr
Noll - Bradshaw
Shanahan - Elway
Shula - Griese, Marino

I'd say maybe the two exceptions to that are Parcells (Simms, Hostetler) and Gibbs (Theismann, Rypien, Williams). But it's hard to be a great coach without great QB play.

This fucking sucks. It's a business but I feel like my dog died. I never believed that he would go. That's on me. Wow, 2020 is such a fucking horrible year. I don't think I have ever loved an athlete like I love TB12.

Good for him. He has certainly earned the right to do what he wants. This is a good diversion from other current events. I am interested to see how this plays out with respect to where he lands and what the Patriots do from here.

That is very true. I am super sad about Brady, but excited to see what BB has in store for the future. The only thing that would stink is if he brought in a guy like Dalton that is neither young nor good.

I'm more speechless at the fact that this news is by far not the worst news we'll hear today, then by the actual result.

We all wanted it end with his retirement after winning one last Lombardi. But it doesn't always end that way, and often ends far less optimally. That's just the nature of professional sports.

I don't blame anyone involved, so I do not get the anger. Brady has earned the right to do what he did. Kraft and Belichick have to put the team's best interests first. Given the salary cap situation, they obviously concluded that signing Brady to a long term extension was not the best use of resources. I cannot fault them for that; at 43, the downside risk for Brady is very real. It's not that he's necessarily in decline; it's also that at 43, a significant injury could easily accelerate a decline to the point he earns far less than his contract value.

Belichick has a team to build, and Kraft has bills to pay, and the team will still be around long after Brady retires regardless. But the Tom Brady wing of the Patriots Hall of Fame will be epic.

Schefter: Despite today’s proclamation that he would not be returning to New England, Tom Brady has not made a decision on where he will play next season and he will be exploring his options, per a league source.
Does this seem strange to anyone else - essentially closing that door before completely walking through the threshold of another? Perhaps it's true, as there hasn't been reports of definitive destination/term info as of yet, but still weird to me...

Deflategate was an absolute joke and sham.

I agree, I was here too. But we were the only ones reading in deep enough to see it. The rest of the country was just ready to believe it. And honestly, it's in part because a lot of NE knows it was so out if character that it was worth digging in.

Well, if nothing else, at least now I'm pretty okay with the coronavirus taking me. I can go before I have to see Mookie or Brady play a real game in another uniform.

I think it's probably the best move for the longterm for the franchise, and may be the right move for Tom. He's getting a statue at the stadium regardless, but it would have been nice if he could have finished his career only wearing this uniform. If I had to place money on who will regret this move more ten years from now, it will probably be Tom, certainly more than Bill, possibly more than Kraft.

Can’t possibly ever be mad at TB, but this is incredibly sad. He deserved to finish career in NE. When you have the greatest player in the history of a sport, you make sure he finishes his career in one spot no matter what.

I always said I’d retire with Brady & that day is today. Between the women beating, Goodell & concussions, the nfl is an awful league & I am no longer going to watch it without Brady on the Pats. What a run.
