Do people think Brady and a team have a firm commitment yet? If so amazing it hasn't leaked

Not a Pats fan, but that was a very nice statement from Belichick.
Coming from Bill, who doesn’t hand out compliments to Pats players freely, it hits harder.

For him to say Brady is better than Montana, Unitas, etc., all of whom he saw or coached against, and that Brady helped create the Patriots culture, is about the highest level of compliment you could hear from him.

That Brady production company must be filming all the behind scene machinations.

I am OK with this, I did not want to see Belichick bench Brady, and I know he would do it if he felt it was in the best interest of the team.

I think he's heard from enough teams, including one or two that he'd be interested in, that he's confident he'll sign somewhere without it looking like he had to "settle"

I don't get all the comments that Tom wanting to go to FA means he wants to be paid. He has an unprecedented amount of financial wealth for an athlete thanks to Gisele. I think he wants to compete and saw it wasn't going to happen with NE.

then again, if finances didn't matter, he could have taken literally a minimum deal to stay, so I'm probably spewing shit here.

I think he wants a place he will be paid well, will be able to structure his own program more, and has a shot to win. None of those 3 were more dominant than the other imo.

My guess is that any Pats fan who lived through the pre-Kraft era is at peace with this. We KNOW what came before. Tom Brady had 20 seasons with the Pats, and in the 18 that he started and finished, he took us to 9 Super Bowls and won 6 of them. No other quarterback is EVER going to approach that. As fans, we were unbelievably lucky to be part of this ride.

It's fairly obvious he is going to join Gronk in the WWE.

Jokes aside, you only live once and Tom has the opportunity to earn love from a completely new fan base after 20 years of being a hated Patriot so there's that. He'll always be loved here and he'll come back to retire as a Patriot in 5 or 6 years.

If the plan all along wasn’t for Tom to join the Chargers and do the Lebron thing with his “brand” in LA to launch TB12 nationally, then I will be very surprised.

So we get a 3rd for this right? So BB turned a 6th rounder into a 3rd rounder and got 6 Super Bowls out of it? Fucking genius.

Would they even get anything? He will be technically released.

That's pretty funny when you think about it:

"What's the compensation for losing the greatest QB of all time in free agency?"

"3rd Round pick"

"Ok, then"

Isn't the poll in the OP 100% unanswerable at this point/ I don't think any of us have any real picture of why Brady is leaving. Maybe it's money, maybe it isn't. Maybe it's Bill, maybe not. Maybe it's something else altogether. But we don't know. We're listening to rumors and trying to read between the lines but we just don't know.

That was a pretty strong statement by Belichick, acknowledging that Brady is the greatest QB of all time.

his contract voids automatically, making him a free agent.

That’s not accurate. His contract voided by its terms today, the team didn’t release him from the contract.

Anyways, he is an unrestricted free agent at 4P EST tomorrow, so him signing with another team will be considered in any 2021 draft compensatory pick formula.

Bergeron?
Only for Bruins fans. I love Bergie but he's a nobody outside of hardcore puckheads who root for Boston. Chara is more recognizable, but he's on the back 9. Maybe Pastrnak.

Tatum is a strong maybe. More likely going to be Edelman until he moves on and then maybe Tatum/Bogaerts

It's fairly obvious he is going to join Gronk in the WWE.

Maybe he'll sign to be QB/coach/owner of an XFL franchise and become the face of Vince's league so they can stay close.

Tom Brady does not owe any of us anything. But kudos to the Pats for not going anywhere near $30M.

Joe Namath, Joe Montana, Tom Brady.
It’s a business. I think of Namath and Montana too as examples. The reality is Brady can’t outrun Father Time regardless of his supplements. Thanks for the memories, all good things come to an end. Best wishes to all.

And I think thanks to the Alan Faneca rule not applying to QB he is eligible for a 3rd round pick valuation at least that's what overthecap.com says.

Reads threads backwards
I'm completely satisfied with TB's career and felt at peace with this immediately.

"...elsewhere..."

I hope he takes aim at Ricky Ray's record.

Also, let's go full Ravens instead of trying to win the QB lottery.

I'm surprisingly OK with this. I think its mainly the realization that the Patriots weren't going to be that good even with Brady back, which is probably what pushed him to consider other options anyway. Seeing Tom struggle last year with such a crappy supporting cast wasn't fun as a fan. And I think it would have been mainly more of the same for the next two years. Right now I'm just focused on remembering the good times and thinking about the improbable wondrous quality of it all.

These are thoughts for another thread but I'm firmly supportive of bottoming out to the degree that is possible or desirable given how the NFL works. Mainly that means trading Thuney, not resigning him, and rolling with Stidham rather than some mediocre free agent QB. I also want to see us drafting the best players we can, without any consideration for immediate need.

Having the GOAT QB and GOAT coach together and competing for a Super Bowl every goddamn year couldn't last forever. While nothing will ever be quite as amazing as a fan, I'm intrigued to see what happens next.

For me, it's probably only Pedro who compares to Brady as far as ex-Boston players I want to succeed. It would be nice to see Brady and Belichick each win at least one more, to throw cold water on all the hot takes about whether one's success was dependent on the other. Both greatest of all time as far as I'm concerned, and I'll be forever grateful to both of them for the ridiculous amount of sheer, unadulterated joy they provided over nearly 20 years.

I can't imagine ever saying anything bad about Tom Brady. I love Tom Brady, and thank him for the joy he has brought to my life. If he plays elsewhere, I hope he has success. I won't be envious at all.

When I think of Bobby Orr, I don't think about some guy slinking around the ice with a Blackhawks jersey on. When I think of Paul Pierce, I don't think about him schlepping around the court as a Clipper. I just hope I don't have to watch Tom Brady going out like a bum. Hopefully he will pick a team where he can thrive at his age. I have a feeling that both the Pats and Brady will find this next season challenging.

It lasted basically forever in football terms. 20 years with the same QB and HC....I don't think that's ever been done before in NFL history. That alone speaks to the immense amount of respect the two of them had for each other.

Yep, for me, my two favorite athletes of all time are Pedro and Brady. I have lots of athletes I've really liked and loved (in a sports way) - Ortiz is very high up on the list as is Bruschi, for example - but it's (1) Pedro, and (2) Brady, but acknowledging that Brady has meant far more to the Boston sports scene than Pedro did.

:eyeroll;

Sure Jan.

Guessing you don't watch ESPN... I don't either, but he's a big-time jersey-seller, so he's known across the country.

Sorry if I offended any hockey fans with that line but even you have to know that, in the national consciousness, hockey is 4th out of 4 in mainstream coverage, appreciation, and fans per capita on this side of the US border. Besides, I said Chara was better known than Bergeron.

Bucs' GM Jason Licht acknowledged there is interest in free-agent QB Tom Brady, the two sides spoke Monday, but there has been no conversation today and there is no deal in place. "We're waiting to see what Tom decides just like everybody else," Licht said.
If they spoke Monday, isn't that tampering? Or was that when the "legal tampering" could begin, even if he was not officially a free agent yet?

I thought we were talking about Boston?
As of early January, Tatum had the 4th highest selling jersey in the entire NBA. Fair to assume Boston is a huge part of that.

Just based off of twitter and Reddit, Tatum seems like the clear favorite. Sports fans are fickle though, so let's see how it all unfolds if and when sports pick up again.

There are going to be a lot of hot takes in the days ahead about Brady either being finished ("Good luck with your avocado ice cream, Tom!") and trending toward useless -- and on the other end of the spectrum, how awful it will be to see him throwing darts on another team while Stidham or Dalton get crushed.

I see this a little differently. I think Brady has something, poss. quite a bit, left in the tank. But what I wasn't sure about going into this offseason was whether we would really see it in a Patriots uniform again even if he were to have re-signed -- both due to a lack of weapons here and, perhaps, due to motivation. It's a hard thing to contemplate given Brady's competitiveness. But what we saw last year was a guy who didn't seem to be willing his team across the finish line. Perhaps it was because he knew what was coming. Regardless, a younger Brady wouldn't have let a 2006-ish season wear on him the way last year seemed to and would've looked forward to reloading this year and proving everyone wrong again.

That didn't happen, which makes me think Brady concluded that he could only really do that somewhere else. Which is why I wouldn't be surprised to see him look positively rejuvenated if he ends up on a team like TB -- in the sun, with lots of guys to throw to and a huge weight off his back. Will seeing him show up at OTAs and succeed somewhere else be hard to watch? I guess -- but I'm not sure we'd have seen it here. He'll have a lot to prove -- and if we know anything about Brady, he is at his best when he has a chip on his shoulder and something to prove.

Should be interesting.

Given that the gave him no franchise, I wouldn't be surprised if the Patriots have been very lax on the tampering thing the whole time. Maybe they told Yee he could do what he wanted. I'm not sure whether a team can even waive the no tampering protection but I wouldn't be surprised if there was some sort of tacit understanding here -- and that that happens in general.

Did the Celtics move to another state and we missed it? Or are you trying to imply that because the Bruins have a strong following in their home state that it somehow outweighs the national profile of another athlete in the same city? Bruins fans may be more vocal and visible than Celtics fans, but that doesn't necessarily mean they outnumber them or are somehow more influential.

I know it's a low probability scenario, but would anyone else not be all that shocked if the next thing we here from TB is a retirement announcement. Not wish casting, and not in any way trying to hot take this. It's just, on a second read of his statement, there was something about his wording, or tone, or something, that has me wondering about it. Again, I'm probably way off.

He said "his football journey continues elsewhere". Sure, you *can* read that as something other than playing, but I don't think he's talking about coaching or broadcasting there.

I have long thought that's at the heart of it. Whatever they disagree on, I think BB and Kraft understand that his leaving will be difficult lets not compound it by having to cut him while he's still under contract (or because he's still under contract).

And it bought BB a year to decide when the "a year too soon rather than a year too late" guidepost kicked in.

Seems like all 3 sides behaved reasonably.
I think this is as close to the real story that we are going to get...we are just behind the curve...this was in the works a year ago with the last negotiation.

I had this thought as well, maybe no one has offered him enough money or years to justify all the work and punishment that comes with being an NFL quarterback and he's deciding to pursue another role instead (owner? qb coach? TB12 related?).

He has more high profile endorsements (Nike, Gatorade) than every player in the NFL not named Rodgers, Wilson, Brady, Mahomes, and Mayfield.
