Brady wanted AB on the Pats last year because his weapons were shit. I don't think that means he prioritizes with playing with AB over the general strength of the receiving weapons at whatever destination he chooses. Tampa (if that's the landing spot) doesn't need Brown. And that is leaving aside the fact that Brown is (a) insane and unlikely to be able to avoid being a massive disruption to whoever signs him, and (b) is going to get suspended if anyone signs him.

Only for Celtics fans. I don't know much about Tatum, but he's a nobody outside of hardcore hoopheads who root for Boston.
And the people that follow LeBron on social media. And the people that watch ESPN. But, yeah, total nobody.

This whole thing is strange to me. I truly believe he (a) didn't really enjoy the last couple of years in New England, particularly last year, (b) wants a big, new challenge to round out his career, and (c) isn't doing this at all for the money. I don't think it's about Belichick, and definitely not about Kraft.

Whatever Hulu paid him for the Superbowl ad probably offset the difference here. His family is many generations wealthy, and he'll have large endorsement deals (e.g. Under Aromor) for a long time, plus his fitness line + production studio. He's fine financially. His family is fine financially for the next 1000 years.

I also think (sorry for the take, but here goes) he was sick of the Boston sports media, who does nothing but love to see its own wildly successful teams fail. I would add our heinous local media to the list.

I'd be surprised if that was even remotely a factor in his decision. On balance, he was worshipped here. Being sick of BB, I absolutely think could have been a big driver. Sometimes you've just had enough of a difficult, demanding boss. No matter how well you've succeeded under them.

I still think a plausible explanation is he realized he couldn't win a SB with the Pats (as currently constructed) and wants to go play somewhere else where he has a chance to catch Brees for the TD record. I am going to be root hard for that.

Re: the statements from Kraft and BB -- Didn't these guys get the Red Sox front office memo that you're supposed to stab the guy in the back on his way out the door?

I think everyone has handled this well. Personally, I look forward to seeing TB kick ass in TB or wherever, and I look forward to seeing the Pats rebuild and rise from the ashes.

Hopefully he demands Jules. Love the guy, but it doesn’t make sense to keep Jules on his last legs. If not Tampa, maybe you can trade Edelman to HOU for that Hopkins second rounder.

I don't think there's any evidence whatsoever that the media played a role in his departure. I hate our local media as much as anyone but Brady was treated (for the most part) with the appropriate amount of deference. Felger & Mazz are the only ones who ever came close to criticizing him.

I think it is as simple as we reached the point where the Pats did not value Brady as much as he thought they should.

Edit: I’ll add even F&M didn’t really place any of the blame for 2019 on Brady. They are much, much harsher on Bill.

Wow. Tampa.

When the idea first started circulating it made a fair amount of sense and I think all of us recognized it could happen, but to hear that it actually is happening? Crazy. Just not how I would have seen it ending.

Arians seems like he's pretty different from Belichick. I think Brady is going to have some culture shock. Though I don't think for a minute he won't adapt. That offense will be excellent.

Well I was wrong about Tampa. I have no issues with him going elsewhere and no problem with Tampa. I think its a bad idea for his legacy/career but that’s his call. I am sure he will have a fine year but it could be an epic disaster.

Tom Brady started as a rookie QB three years before his new offensive coordinator started as a rookie QB.

Isn't Tampa where old people go to die? Seems pretty on-brand, if you ask me.

Tampa Bay has an amazing wide receiver duo in Evans and Godwin, though. From that standpoint it makes sense, it's like going from Olive Garden to eating in Milan.

It's going to be fascinating to watch how he and TB does. They have a tough schedule.

Beyond baffling he is choosing to end the greatest career in the history of sports with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. And he signed with the only team that wanted him. Come back Tom this has to be a mistake.

He's earned the right to do what he wants but it's very 'Mays on the Mets' to me.

I'm also about 90% convinced the choice revolves around "TB" marketing. Maybe I'm cynical. Excited to see what BB can do!

What I find weird about Tampa is that Arians strikes me as a guy who's pretty set in his ways. He has a very distinctive offensive style, and one that doesn't particularly suit Brady at 43, so will Brady just have a lot of freedom to install some of his offense there? I kind of expected him to go to a team that had a weaker personality at HC, or maybe a defensive coach.

How are you gonna evaluate Stidham (or whoever the QB is) if you take away his only receiving threat?

There are worse ways to end a career than with Bruce Arians running the show and throwing to two of the ten best receivers in the league. Taking the division from the Saints will be tough, but it's a completely respectable choice even if the franchise itself is a joke.

It depends on what kind of pick they can get for him. If they can get a 2nd I’d drive him to the airport. And I’m a huge fan of the guy. I just think if you can get great value for him get it done.

Good for Tom. Hope he wins one down there and Belichick rebuilds the next great Pats team for 2022. Win - Win and see you in Canton.

Not sure this has fully set in.
BB and RKs statements were amazing.

I don't think the full ramifications will set in until the season starts.

Oh hey the Pats are down 4 with 3 minutes left? No big deal! wait, uh uh uh, oh boy.

TB12 helped give us the arguably greatest run in sports history. We are all lucky to have witnessed that. We knew it was going to end sometime. Would I have rather it happened after SB7? Absolutely. But it seems TB12 wants one more challenge. Best of luck - until it is a TB v NE SB. Then lets hope for a classic Miami type game.

At least get some decent uniforms. Seeing Brady in one of those outfits is going to be sickening enough. Go back to the all-white John McKay ones.

This is where I’m at. He wants to pad his stats for the history books and have an outside chance at another SB if a lot of things break right.

To do 2/60 the Patriots cap hits would have been under a likely deal something like:

2020 $18m
2021 $25m
2022 $15.25m
2023 $15.25m

In order to just make this year work they would need to make at least one big move they wouldn’t have had to make. Then $25 next year and another $30.5 million saddling the team through the two post-Brady years.

we will see the deal when we see it but the Patriots are not in position to do that right now. If he had 2/60 locked up he would have had to give a big discount to stay. They maybe could have done 2/47.5 or 50 but even that would have been a stretch.

We all think we know Brady. And we know his wife makes a boatload of money. But it is at least possible that in the end this just came down to what it often comes down to.

I've always kind of assumed it's all of Florida, really.
I've been in Tampa Bay for 30 years. St Pete used to be "Gods waiting room". Not any more. Hip city on the Bay with ton of nightlife. Pretty much same in Tampa. Booming city with multi billion dollar development around Amalie Arena...not that Brady cares much about all of that...

Funny thing about Tampa; last time I was there for a Bruins game my brother and I went to the largest local brewery in town. We had Bruins gear on, and when we sat down the two bartenders started talking about how much they hated Brady and the Patriots and wouldn’t serve us. I bet those two guys are buying Brady 12 Bucs jerseys right now.

That's more exception than the rule as most residents are used to visiting team fans showing up en masse
