AZ is only getting a bag if another team values McCarthy about as much as they do Maye. I'm not sure MN values them that closely as they seem to be much more interested in Maye.
sure but you're not really creating a very reasonable scenario because in order for it to work you need:
1. The Patriots to like JJ McCarthy enough to spend a top pick on him, but not enough to draft him at #3 to avoid a possibility of losing him.
2. NYG to be willing to give a big bag to move up to #3 for Maye (and you are sure they want Maye)
3. The Cardinals to be willing to not get MHJ
4. No other team in the whole draft to want JJ McCarthy anywhere near as much as the Patriots and be willing to trade to #4.
5. The Cardinals are willing to trade down to #6 for a minor price.
6. The Cardinals willing to agree to the trade BEFORE they're on the clock, thereby passing on the extra leverage to get best and final offers from other teams.
That is a lot of things that need to happen, and they have to happen with all parties involved having imperfect knowledge. Patriots can't trade down if the goal is McCarthy without an agreement from ARI, and ARI has no incentive to make that agreement before they are on the clock because they won't truly know what they can get elsewhere.
The big flaw i the whole thing is assuming that moving from 3 to 4 is worth a lot more than moving from 6 to 4 when both are spots to take QBs. If you think a QB is worth #4, expect to pay up for him. And ARI knows you're trading up to #4 not because you are afraid of LAC or ARI taking your QB... but that other teams are going to leapfrog you.
