If you are looking for a good hockey book to read, check out "Mr. Hockey: Gordie Howe" This is one of the best sports autobiographies that I have read. Today's players have no concept of Howe's path to greatness. In fact young boys who had Howe's economic background would most likely be unable to play the game today. There is a great forward by Bobby Orr as well. Orr pointed out one stat that I had either forgotten or was unaware of, that being that Howe finished in the top 5 in the scoring race for 20 consecutive years. ( a remarkable feat)
    Well worth checking out!

Would anyone be kind enough to give me a recommendation for a comprehensive hockey history book? I really enjoyed Michael MacCambridge's book on football, American's Game, and would love to be able to find something similar for hockey.

As someone who did not grow up playing/watching hockey, and lacks a lot of the basic fundamentals from playing hockey, I actually really enjoyed Greg Wyshynski's "Take Your Eye Off The Puck". I'm about half way through, but what got me hooked was a good technical discussion of the different kinds of forechecks(1-2-2, 2-1-2, 1-3-1) and what the goal/plan is for each one. There's a lot of x-and-o stuff that I just never got and am enjoying.

I'm reading Stephen Cole's Hockey Night Fever, which is all about 70s hockey. Pretty good so far - never knew Bobby Orr was such a hothead or that he was basically the ringleader for the Bruins' party scene, as he laid down a law that all Bruins had to have at least two beers after the game.

Even if you heard the Marek v Wyshynski podcast where Cole tried to tell you every single story in the book, it's still good.

I got Take Your Eye Off The Puck as well. Only flipped through it so far but I liked it.
