Those mesh hats worked out so well during spring training that MLB brought them back for the all star game.
If he loses focus and hits someone in the head, it still counts. Edit: Manoah just hit a guy throwing what Schmoltz told him to. However, he does seem fairly comfortable with the mic.
Can't imagine pitching while having a mic on with potentially millions listening.... but getting feedback from Smoltz...
The only thing worse than interviewing a player while he is in the middle of a play is keeping the segment going when the lapel mic isn't working and we can't really hear what the player is saying.

It is a starting pitcher throwing an inning or two instead of his normal six or seven, I think he can handle it.
I was gonna say I think you're reaching a bit, but then Smoltz ordered the exact pitch that drilled McNeil.
I still say I'd pay good money for an HBO broadcast of games with uncensored mics. No "interviews," just be a fly on the wall.
I enjoyed that. I didn't know Manoah's personality and now I'm a fan. Good sense of humor. "I threw a front food slider."
Oh good, can't really hear Cole or Fried in the dugout either. Top-notch broadcasting here!
fake edit: guess I'm in the minority, but the varied audio levels are torpedoing any positive aspects of this. Is it just the L.A. station that's having these mixing issues?

That's why their doing this! Most Americans can't name 5 out of market baseball players.
Same. I've got my surround turned on, don't know if thats doing it. I'm also watching the oversaturated 4k broadcast.
Maybe. I am having trouble hearing it, but I'm getting most of it and I'm an old lady.
OK, good -- glad it's not just me.
Found this online; my broadcast (Fox 11 in Los Angeles) does not sound like this to me.

I’m blind so have perfect hearing and the players are all very muffled/quiet. It’s not you all”s ears.(watching via DirecTV)
So the key to good in-game interviews is doing it with guys with fun personalities. This is boring.
