Assuming there's no fallout somehow with Kraft (he coaches until he retires) and doesn't get suspended by the NFL for saying something after x-Gate, and he doesn't leave for another job, how many years until Belichick gives it up?

is it wrong that I want Belichick to coach long into his Marv Levy senile years? I honestly don't care if we have a winning season post-Brady. I just love the thought of an evermore-cantankerous Belichick roaming the sidelines even if he can't see very well anymore or remember the names of his players. That would have to be more enjoyable than whatever retread we'd wind up with otherwise.

He said in the 2009 Football Life footage that he won't be coaching into his 70s like Marv Levy.

That gives him 5-6 more seasons coaching the Pats before that self-imposed deadline, whether he upholds it or not.

I also think it's worth noting that his son is now on the coaching staff. Belichick talked at length about how much that -- and their newfound father/son time -- meant to him in one of his press conferences this week, and I wouldn't underestimate the impact that could have.

From the Joe Posnanski piece on Bill:

Belichick fact: He will NOT coach in his 70s the way Marv Levy did. He could not make that more clear. People think he can’t live without football. They’re wrong. He CAN live without football, and he will not coach when he’s in his 70s, and he says you can take that to the bank. Bill Belichick turns 63 in April.

Not that Pos can't judge a football coach as wrong as the next guy, but I'm actually inclined to credit a strong statement from a credible third-party observer even more than one straight from the horse's mouth.  That's the kind of life question people are shite at answering for themselves.  As they support each other, I think it's a strong bet.  He'll give the league one last celebratory fuck at 69, and then ride off into the sunset.

I may be a total sucker but I believe Brady has another 5 or so quality years in him. So I agree with others - he coaches one season past Brady to turn the keys over, and that happens to be at age 69.
