This all puts an even finer point on the team wide collapse after game 3. Up 2-1, it sure looked like the Cs were the better, more athletic, longer team. And then everyone sucked ass for the rest of the series. Or nearly everyone. Including, ironically, Udoka, who arguably failed to make adjustments and get the most out of his team, and who watched the offense totally bog down without coaxing them out of it.
But it was mostly OK, as they were (and still are) young, and would likely sign or trade for players who would fill in the gaps, and be a long term contender.
Fast forward a short amount of time and Ime is gone (possibly forever), one of the two reinforcements is gone (likely for the season), a $17.1 mm trade exception was not used, we don't know if the core will embrace Mazulla (though I bet they will), Robert Williams (who appears to be made of glass) has undergone a surgery late in the off season, and we don't know if how the situation was handled by the team will affect any or all of the core.
Oh, and the Cavs have made some strong moves, as have the Sixers and Bucks.
It's foolish to write this Cs core off, but it's perhaps a bit more difficult to see them getting back to the Finals next season. True, it's not nearly impossible, and there's plenty of reasons why they might. But for me at least, the failure against the Warriors hurts a little more today.
