I’m not seeing “I was sun blinded so blew into a highway crossing” as a better explanation than running the stop sign.

One of the survivors of the crash, defenseman Layne Matechuk, has emerged from his coma:

The statement noted the defenceman from Colonsay, Sask. was awake, but unable to speak.

“However, each day, he gets a little stronger and we are getting signs from him about what he is thinking,” the family wrote.

Matechuk was transferred to Saskatoon City Hospital this week to continue his recovery process.

The family added it seemed Matechuk didn’t remember the crash.

“He doesn’t appear to know what has happened.”

In the statement, the family said they’ve been “overwhelmed” by support from friends and strangers.

But they noted they don’t have an easy path ahead.

“We wish we could tell you it’s getting easier. The reality is – it’s not. At this point, we are not sure when Layne will get to leave hospital. But, what we can tell you is that we believe he gets a little closer every day.”

Just an update. Driver plead guilty, does not want a trial.

In Melfort, Sask., provincial court Tuesday morning, Sidhu pleaded guilty to 16 counts of dangerous driving causing death and 13 counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm. On April 6, 2018, the truck Sidhu was driving collided with the Humboldt Broncos tour bus while the team was travelling to a playoff game in Nipawin, Sask. Sixteen people died and 13 were injured in the crash.

Small favours I guess. Shitty situation, but owning up to it isithe right thing to do and he's been living with and will live with that immense guilt for the remainder of his life, which I assume will be behind bars.

Also, the new coach that was hired in July, has parted ways with the team as of December 28

The only remaining hockey player still in the hospital after the Humboldt Broncos bus crash has been released.

Nearly 11 months ago, Morgan Gobeil suffered a serious head injury in the crash. Over the course of 333 days in Saskatoon City Hospital, the 19-year-old has undergone numerous surgeries and hours of physical, occupational, and speech therapy. Gobeil still can't walk or talk, but the family says it remains "hopeful that those will be the kind of milestones we will someday be able to celebrate.

Small update

The Broncos made the SJHL playoffs and are facing my Estevan Bruins.
We attended the game last night. Humboldt won 4-1.

Found a clip from TSN on it. Broncos only had two players from last year's team play on the team this year, Derek Patter and Brayden Camrud

I had a quick chat with some Humboldt fans during the game. They are happy to be back in the playoffs and starting to seem like things are back to normal

What the hell is wrong that requires a 30 minute repair right after the Zamboni? I had to switch rinks one time after the second period of a game because the Zam cut the ice too low and basically led to exposed concrete behind the nets (and a skate sharpening that was turned useless) but that seemed to be gross incompetence.

Zamboni appears to have cut the ice too low. Pulling up an in ice advertisement. They finally fixed it. We scored with 2:41 left to tie it. Waiting on O/T to start.

Edit/ Game over. Estevan scores 1:43 into the 2nd O/T. Game 6 in Humboldt Sunday night. Game ended 4 hours, 22 minutes after puck drop

Back to the topic at hand, 8 years seems light on the sentencing, but hearing on the radio that even the parents that wanted a maximum sentence said the Judge did a very professional job and explained the reasoning behind his decision. And it's actually 8 years per death and 5 for each injury, but serves everything concurrently. He will be deported when the sentence ends.

Final update, Estevan wins the series 4-3 with an OT winner in game 7. Humboldt lead the Series 3-1. Estevan won both OT games. In the double OT Game 5, Humboldt hit the post twice in the last 5 minutes of the game. Either of those going in would've won them the series.

Humboldt fans had a fairly good contingent with them tonight, especially with it being a 4.5 hour drive. They had a very good season and it was a heck of a good series to watch and listen to.

Yes, hearing an interview with Ryan before he went, he said any improvement would be huge and this is huge

Our family is billeting an Estevan Bruin player this year. It's our first doing so and it's been going really well so far
