Pelicans’ Zion Williamson in a ‘mental battle’ to play again

METAIRIE, La. — All-Star forward Zion Williamson said he won’t return to the New Orleans Pelicans’ lineup until he’s confident his body will respond well to the way he wants to play.
“Physically, I’m fine," Williamson, who injured his right hamstring in early January, said Tuesday. “Now it’s just a matter of when I feel like Zion.
“I can pretty much do everything, but it’s just a matter of the level that I was playing at before my hamstring,” Williamson continued. “I don’t want to go out there and be in my own head and affect the team when I can just be on the sideline supporting them more, because I know myself. If I was to go out there, I would be in my head. I would hesitate on certain moves and it could affect the game.”
Williamson said he has to overcome "a little bit of a mental battle" because of a setback in his recovery that prevented him from participating in the All-Star Game.
“When I reaggravated it back in February, it was tough. So, when I got to make certain moves, there is that hesitation,” Williamson said. “I understand the magnitude of these games coming up and I don’t want to be out there hesitating or doing something that may affect my team in a bad way.”
Williamson's anxiety about re-injury is understandable, given how his first four NBA seasons have gone since he was selected first overall out of Duke in the 2019 NBA draft.

"For those people that think that I just want to sit on the sideline just to sit over there, I don’t know why people think that.
“From my perspective, I just want to play basketball. I want to hoop. I want to play the game I love,” Williamson continued. "But the reality of it is, whether I check my phone or I’m just watching TV, no matter what it is, I can’t really escape what the world thinks, what people’s opinions are. So, it’s frustrating.”
Williamson said his series of long absences from the court have taught him that “nothing's really guaranteed."
“If it’s in God’s plan to be who I feel like I should be, then it’s in his plan," Williamson said. "If not, then you’ve got to live with it.”

They do the same with jet blue now but no half court shot. Everyone gets a trophy culture. That was a fun read thanks for sharing.
I got to do one of the co test at the garden back in 97. Had 30 seconds to make a layup, FT, 3, and half court. You win airfare to various locations. I think NY was the layup, DC the FT, Orlando for the 3, and Miami for half court. Made the first three but didn’t come close with the half court shot.
I’m guessing you’re enjoying Andre Miller with a three point shot, Malcolm Brogdon.Anyone who hasn’t yet listened to Redick’s interview of JR Smith in this weeks “The Old Man and The Three” you are missing out. Can not highly recommend enough and not only bc JR speaks highly of my goat Andre Miller.
“Delly almost died trying to guard Steph Curry. No, I mean, literally almost died.”
I might trade the 3 point shot for the reliability. This was as healthy a regular season as we could have reasonably hoped for from Brogdon, and he still missed more than twice as many games this year (15) as Miller did in his first 14 seasons combined (6). Just remarkable.I’m guessing you’re enjoying Andre Miller with a three point shot, Malcolm Brogdon.
.
Brogdon made more three pointers in his rookie year than Miller did over his entire 14 year careerI might trade the 3 point shot for the reliability. He's also solidly bigger (6'5 229 vs 6'3 200), which gives him a higher ceiling on both ends of the court. Miller's biggest strength was his durability, which happens to be Brogdon's biggest weakness. If you were to combine their careers, Miller would own 11 of the top 12 scoring seasons (total points) and all 14 of the top passing seasons (total assists). Brogdon absolutely is the better player between the two (although they both occupy/occupied that murky area between solid starter and borderline all-star), when he's on the court.Brogdon made more three pointers in his rookie year than Miller did over his entire 14 year career
Sadly this was my speculation a few days ago and I was told by multiple posters I was a moron. Took less than two days to be proven correct. Never doubt the fanatics to “support” their team.
That doesn't say she was escorted out because she did anything wrong. She was escorted out because there were asshole fans not named Diar DeRozan. There was also a small minority of Raptors fans on Reddit who had horrific things to say about her (and mods deleted their posts).Sadly this was my speculation a few days ago and I was told by multiple posters I was a moron. Which was the entire point I made in real time that you pushed back on.That doesn't say she was escorted out because she did anything wrong. It’s pretty bad precedence to allow a 10 year old girl to scream at a road venue (or home really). Especially as the stakes rise and fans get more into fanatics. Not only is it annoying as hell, but something bad could ensue.
Is this a joke? People don't scream during foul shots?
They're professional basketball players. It's their job to shut out the crowd.
Yeah, not worried about the players. I can’t imagine having a 10 year old scream bloody murder 50x a game when the Celtics players were about to shoot a free throw. Can you? Fans get thrown out for ruining the fan experience all the time. Would the home crowd allow a 40 year old male to scream bloody murder yells on the road when the home team was shooting free throws in a playoff game? God forbid some overserved fan gets annoyed and tries to quiet the screaming fan on their own. It’s just a situation that doesn’t need to exist. Like shining lasers near players faces.
One leads to the other. The problem is the drunk / threatening fan, not her.
Yeah, didn’t “bring it up again” quoted a prior post. Thanks for your contribution. Do you disagree that intentionally impacting the games at road stadiums can lead to bad situations? Again we have people encouraging this behavior and want more of it. Seems short sided given fan behavior. What’s your expert take?Oh good you brought up the lasers again. Not sure everyone caught that the first time you put it out there. Totally analogous to someone yelling.
Quoting something brings it back up again. It’s a silly analogy that’s all I’m saying. I have no dog in the yelling fan on the road fight. I just know it’s in no way analogous to something that’s potentially at least mildly dangerous to the player.Yeah, didn’t “bring it up again” quoted a prior post. Thanks for your contribution. have you guys ever read a Celtics playoff game thread and seen the various thoughts from the same individuals on SoSH?
Not sure if this is directed at me or game commentary. This is one of the most obvious things to see coming. Yet many still can’t acknowledge one action can lead to many others. I’m not agreeing with anyone’s behavior here. I think the 9 year old is in the wrong, but she’s 9. Whoever was with her should have given her 2 or 3 of them before reeling it in. I sure as hell think the people threatening her are in the wrong and are far worse than her actions (clearly - does this even need to be written?). I think the media is wrong for praising this as great activity that should be pursued by others. LOL MVP LOL!!!’ It’s the same thing as the cheerleading for GME that got SoSH all excited. Somehow people cant see the negative consequences to come from it. Then they don’t admit their own cheerleading was part of the problem. It’s not dunking on anything. It’s a reminder that people on here constantly push shortsighted takes without taking a few minutes to think through the implications, then are quickly proven wrong and don’t own it….only to do it again and again. Call it defense. You really think this is a dunk opportunity?
Yes!!!!! Contagion!!!Not sure if this is directed at me or game commentary. This is one of the most obvious things to see coming. Yet many still can’t acknowledge one action can lead to many others. So it's her fault? She's the one who needs to leave? This is a 9-year-old version of "but did you see what she was wearing"One leads to the other.
Me comparing someone screaming to intentionally disrupt play at a road game in front of 20,000 people is the same as a woman being raped for how she dresses. Thanks for your participation. So it's her fault? She's the one who needs to leave? This is a 9-year-old version of "but did you see what she was wearing"
Yeah I’m not the one making claims that I victim blame women for being raped, but carry on. Clearly you are operating on a different intellectual level with your insight. Not all blaming-the-victim scenarios have to be identical in order for the analogy of form to be accurate.
No, it's not "the same", nor did I say that. Your remark was similar in that specific respect that I identified.
There were 16 words in that sentence, was that too complex for you or something? My god, man. Get a hold of yourself.
This is one of those internet things that long experience has taught me to stay out of, but...wait -- "all parties are wrong"? A sweet 9 year old girl cutely screaming at grown men shooting FTs is wrong? Okay for 15,000+ fans to scream at the top of their lungs, but she gets singled out as wrong? Okay....I’m on record as saying all parties are wrong and the people reacting are clearly the worse party, ...
What about the give-or-take 10k fans screaming FUCK YOU DRAYMOND in the finals? Where do they fall on the unacceptable public behavior spectrum? I'm not necessarily condoning either, but I don't find her gamesmanship materially better or worse. If I'm being completely honest with myself, 9 years old (typical 3rd grade age) should be old enough for a child to know what acceptable and unacceptable public behavior is.
I’d put that under unacceptable public behavior. If you have to explain to a child watching/attending what they are yelling and why they shouldn’t do it in the future, you can get a good idea it’s not acceptable behavior. What about the give-or-take 10k fans screaming FUCK YOU DRAYMOND in the finals? We have a winner!!!Clearly, this would have all been best resolved by someone throwing a piece of pizza at her.
I said, explicitly, that I didn’t condone it. In fact, I had to make a joke out of it with my 9 and 11 year-olds when we were in the garden last June. But if thousands of grown adults who should know better can’t control themselves, I’m not gonna get up in arms over a little kid.I’d put that under unacceptable public behavior. Do you think it’s acceptable behavior for adults to hurl swears at each other? People do that on SoSH they get put in timeout…Why do you think that is? Is it better if 10k people do it?
Once difference is that, I think, so many people are chanting it that if the TV people want to include any crowd noise at all, they have to broadcast it. I have to think that they have a choice about which audience mikes to use or not, which to turn up or down a few notches, etc., that they could choose to enhance or diminish one 9-year-old's screaming, especially once they figure out where it's coming from. Of course I am not in the broadcasting business, so I may be completely wrong about this. What about the give-or-take 10k fans screaming FUCK YOU DRAYMOND in the finals? Don't worry, they called the Giannis charge a foul on Love, so no rule change needed!Silver is going to expand the restricted area if the playoffs lost Ja and Giannis in G1 of the first round to charges.
I would be fine with expanding the restricted area in exchange for calling more offensive fouls when the guy is methodically backing down in the post and bumping into the defender over and over again to move him off the spot, initiate contact, and force the hand of the refs. IOW, there should be more offensive calls awarded to on-ball defenders holding their position and fewer to off-ball guys sliding over to take charges.Silver is going to expand the restricted area if the playoffs lost Ja and Giannis in G1 of the first round to charges.
It's interesting how much more that rule change would affect Giannis than it would Embiid and Jokic. The latter two have incredibly dangerous midrange games, and get by guys inside the arc with footwork and ballhandling.I would be fine with expanding the restricted area in exchange for calling more offensive fouls when the guy is methodically backing down in the post and bumping into the defender over and over again to move him off the spot, initiate contact, and force the hand of the refs. Giannis isn't unskilled, per se, but if you take away the battering ram option, he might not be a top-20 player. Dude really relies on throwing people out of the way.
