Hyland has been in the doghouse for several weeks now. Heard for awhile that the Nuggets been trying to move him. He makes Trae Young look like he’s defending with Pat Beverly intensity at times.
And Hyland's buddies had some serious swipes at Murray online which kind of corroborate the locker room rumors. The situation seems beyond repair.

It takes a special someone to run yourself off a team 100 games into your career after entering the league with a chip on your shoulder. He can be a good individual defender but may be the least switchable this side of Trae Young. If he gets his head together, gains more experience and finds the right team there is no reason he can’t have a similar career to Jamal Crawford or Jordan Clarkson……as this kid can flat out shoot/score with a pretty sick handle to create his shot.

I agree with the first part. Second, not so much. He's incredibly small and frale. And crawford and clarkson are a lot taller than him. Imagine bones playing lead guard for 30 mpg? He'd never hold up.

Interesting you’d say this when both Crawford and Clarkson failed early in their careers as lead guards until they found their niche as scorers off the bench . Hyland can certainly shoot with anyone but yes he’s a little smaller than Clarkson at the same age and shorter than Crawford.

You're right but I'm talking more durability. Crawford played for a long time and i imagine JC will as well. Bones isnt just a little smaller than clarkson either and JC can playmake.

I just dont get the bones hype. Tiny as fuck chucker who's shown no ability to do anything else. Denver should dump him and move on, they'll be another scrub wirh a cool nickname soon.

Yeah I get what you’re saying but looking back to those guys second year they were also both one dimensional and flawed everywhere else. He’s got a lot of figuring out to do as well as gaining physical strength just as they did in their second year before their original team gave up on them as well. He has a legit elite NBA skill but obv needs work everywhere else.

I mean im not going to root for a guy to fail but he's in a great learning spot and asking out of it. It's a really bad sign.

He never asked out but once his beef with Malone and Murray happened, his benching/reduced role, and the Nuggets openly looking to move him he was frustrated and said yeah I’d be so open to that. I’d imagine he lands in Minnesota with Connelly who drafted him.

At the risk of too many threads maybe we need a trade deadline chatter/ideas thread. For instance, with this news, i wonder if the warriors try to make a move to stay afloat while he's out. The west is so tight, a few weeks of bad ball could see them out of the picture when he comes back.
Jordan Poole is a terrible fit on the court with Curry, but when Curry is out, Poole can do a reasonable facsimile of his performance to keep GS afloat. They are 20-18 when he plays and 7-8 when he sits, not a giant difference. They should make a move anyway (what they're doing trying to burn the candle at both ends with their youth movement is almost criminal, it's like they're choosing to do to Curry what the Lakers are doing to Lebron), but not out of desperation while Curry is hurt.

The SFJ injury is similar to one Marcus Smart had his 2nd year in the league... he missed 18 games over 37 days.
I am not sure that Smart’s subluxation involved actual partial tears of the ligaments involved like Curry’s did. Those partial tears push it from a grade 1 sprain to a grade 2. Depending on how severe the tears are, Curry could be out for a significantly longer period of time.

Isn't that bad enough, if he misses ~20 games as has been suggested, to put them in a position where they are at the fringe or out of the playoff picture with ten games to go?

I think you're right about Hyland turning into an off the bench scorer that can stick around the league for a long time.

I don't think you have the right comps though. IMO, the right comp is Lou Williams.

Yes for sure, that’s a guy who also failed in his first stop in the league when they tried to force him into being a pure PG.

Lol... imagine paying $4BILLION to buy an NBA team, then immediately hiring one of the worst executives in the history of the league.
On top of that, a big reason the team was available for sale was a racism and sexual harassment scandal... so better hire a guy who cost his team $11.5M in sexual harassment settlements.

Alex Rodriguez and partner Marc Lore have delayed the next tranche of their purchase of the Minnesota Timberwolves...

https://www.twincities.com/2023/02/04/charley-walters-lore-rodriguez-get-permission-to-delay-payment-for-timberwolves/

...reportedly because A-Rod is having trouble coming up with the cash, perhaps due to the terms of his J-Lo breakup:

https://nypost.com/2022/08/29/a-rods-1-5b-deal-to-buy-t-wolves-at-risk-and-some-blame-j-lo-breakup/
Arod choking in the end is very on-brand.

There's a very good case that Isiah Thomas is the worst sports executive in modern sports history. How you would give him a serious job at this point is completely beyond me.

Devin Booker should make a trade request immediately to save the waiting time.

100%. I guarantee Isiah has been buttering him up for years. You can write off the Suns as a contender for the foreseeable future if Thomas has any meaningful say in anything.

Isiah Thomas's management resume, in case anyone else needed to refresh their memory as I did:

  • Such an asshole that Jordan, Magic and others conspired to keep him off the Dream Team
  • Part-owner of new expansion Toronto Raptors; left 4 years later after acrimonious dispute with management
  • Bought the Continental Basketball Association in 1999, which for over 50 years (it pre-dated the NBA itself) had served as the de-facto second division of pro basketball, being a place for ex-NBAers and NBA hopefuls and serving as the development / reserve league for the NBA. Less than 18 months after purchase, and after refusing a buyout offer from the NBA itself, he runs it into the ground, the CBA files for bankruptcy, and ceases operations a few months later. The NBA D-League (now G-League) begins play that fall.
  • 4 years coaching the Pacers, 2000-2003, during which time he has a surplus of young talent that chronically overperforms; Larry Bird comes back to team operations specifically to fire him.
  • 3 years as POBO for the Knicks (2003-2006), at the end of which the Knicks had the highest payroll and 2nd-worst record. James Dolan fires coach Larry Brown, "promotes" Thomas to be coach-GM (a la Bill Belichick), and after 2 more seasons (2006-2008) of abject failure, he is "reassigned" to basically be paid out his contract on garden leave. During which time he was forbidden from having any contact with the NBA players, lest he undermine the new coach.
  • In the midst of his Knicks tenure, the Knicks and Thomas are sued by an employee who says she was sexually harassed by Thomas, and then fired (retaliated against) for complaining about it. The suit is later settled for $11.5M, as noted above.
  • A few months after his reassignment by the Knicks, Thomas is hospitalized for overdosing on Lunesta.
  • 3 seasons coaching at Florida International University, 2009-2012, posting a 26-65 record. After his first season, he attempted to double-dip by returning to his "consultant" duties with the Knicks on top of coaching FIU, but stopped due to NBA bylaws.
  • In 2015, 3 years after leaving FIU, he is appointed Team President of the WNBA franchise NY Liberty (then-owned by James Dolan), which he runs for 4 years; the team made the 3rd round of the playoffs his first year, 2nd round in his 2nd and 3rd years, and finished 5th out of 6 in their division his 4th year. In early 2019, Joseph Tsai buys the team (and later that year buys the rest of the Nets), and fires him a month later.
  • Various TV commentary gigs, including NBA TV studio analyst, and TNT "Players Only" NBA coverage
  • Various business ventures, from corporate real estate to champagne importing to marketing to waste removal

Anytime you get the chance to hire a guy who wrecked two NBA teams, got pushed out of a third, wrecked one college team, and drove an entire basketball league into the grave, who also has 5 or 6 outside business ventures that he will devote most of his time to, you have to jump at that chance.

OK, so who got the biggest haul for trading their superstar? Utah in the Gobert trade? Utah in the Mitchell trade? BRK in the Durant trade?

Gobert for Beasley, Vanderbilt, Beverley, Kessler, 23, 25, 27, 29 picks, and 28 swap (my god as I type that out I want to throw up as a Celtic fan who lives in the twin cities and have somewhat adopted the Wolves as a team to root for)

Mitchell for Markanen, Sexton, Agbaji, 25, 27, 29 picks, and 26 and 28 swap

Durant for Bridges, Johnson, Crowder, 23, 25, 27, picks, 28 swap.

UTA got a ridiculous amount of picks in the Gobert trade - 5 picks if you consider Kessler as a first round pick and not a guy. The players they sent amounted to being worth not much more than a bunch of 2nd round picks though. Kessler obviously looks great, but at the time, he was just a late first round pick that nobody was all that excited about.

UTA got a really good player in Markanen, although he wasn't viewed as anything special when the deal was made. Sexton has been OK. And they got 3 firsts and 2 swaps

BRK got probably the best haul of players in Bridges and Johnson, although with how well Markanen has been that is debatable. They got the same # of picks as the Mitchell trade, but one less swap.

If I had to choose, as a tanking young team, I think I take the Gobert deal every single time. None of the Markanen, Bridges, Johnson, etc are good enough to be the 3rd best player on a championship team, so I think I would lean on such a pick heavy haul, with a few role players sprinkled in.

1. Nets/Durant was the biggest haul. As it should be. Mikal Bridges would command 3-4 Firsts on his own, which if I was the Nets I would have done immediately. Mikal isn't taking them out of middling

https://hoopshype.com/2023/02/10/nets-were-offered-four-first-round-picks-by-a-team-for-mikal-bridges/

2. The Gobert trade was by far the biggest heist. Ever. Rudy's contract is barely a positive asset IMO. But my view on BIGs isn't the standard.

A few details swing this hard to the Durant haul being the best:
- 2029 Minny pick is top-5 protected
- Phoenix also gave a 29 unprotected to Brooklyn
- Brooklyn was apparently offered 4 (!) 1sts from Memphis for Bridges, I don't think Kessler gets that, but maybe I'm wrong. He'd get at least 2 quality 1sts if Utah dealt him.

Kessler is really good, which makes things closer. But the extra value of Bridges, plus the fact that Phoenix could get very bad in 2027-29 (with some shot to be bad by 2025) swings this one to Brooklyn for me.

I agree, the Durant return is the best of the bunch, but both the UTA trades are better values.

What? No fucking chance of this. Bridges is a very nice player, but come on
I like him a lot. BUT I'd immediately move him for 3-4 Firsts...Zach Lowe & Woj reported it, so it's probably legit

2nd in DPOY last year. Very Durable. Great contract.
I imagine DARKO likes him a lot since he's consistently a positive +/-, On-Off over massive minutes.

I wouldn't be that surprised if the ask for Bridges was 3-4 1sts... he's 26, an All-defense guys, on a very reasonable 4/90 contract. He also has arguably depressed offensive numbers because he's been on a team with Paul, Booker and Ayton. In the games Booker missed this year he averaged about 19 ppg. 4 APG as well.

As noted, if Anunoby is a 3 1sts guy than Bridges should be more, he's 1 year older but he's better on both ends, and he's been incredibly durable.
