Didn't see a thread on this...

Anyone planning on getting one of these? After a decade or more with Android, I'm ready to switch. Partly to try something new, and partly because Google's deprecation of Play Music was kind of the last straw for me and relying on Google to support their products.

I am trying to figure out whether it will make sense to get the 12 Pro over the standard 12. The Pro Max is larger than I wish to carry. I fear the Mini will be difficult to type on, and that the battery will be garbage, although I like the form factor of a small phone.

Ultimately I'm going to need to wait to see battery reviews and whatnot, but I'm curious to know the opinions of people who are familiar with iPhones.

Are you someone who takes a lot of photos/shares photos you take? If so than your options are really between the Pro & Pro max. Both of those have a much better camra than the other iphone 12 models. Battery will also be better on the Pro/Pro max vs the standard 12

I went from Blackberry>Android (10+ years?)>iPhone 11 (standard) last year. I made the switch because they a)discontinued the rugged Samsung Galaxy phone and b) because everyone else in my house is on apple products, so it made sense to sync up. After 11 months, the phone is still doing great. Battery always lasts the entire day, at least. I wanted the pro just because I always want the best, but the 11 has been great.

I'll be grabbing a 12 Pro Max once AT&T gets them. My XS Max is still doing ok minus some diminished battery life but I'm a sucker for a new iPhone every two years. Like soxhop said the differences between the standard phone and the Pro are mainly oriented around the camera. If you're a big picture taker it might be best to spring for the Pro. I don't care all that much about the camera but I love the big screen which is why I'm going for the Pro Max.

My XS Max is the best phone I've ever owned and it isn't even close, and I've had a few Androids in the past. I have several friends that were ardent Android users but switched to the iPhone 11 and they'll never go back. I'm no Apple fanatic but I would never consider a different phone brand.

I went down the iPhone rabbit hole a long time ago since it was easy to integrate with my Mac. I am still using an iPhone 7. I was not going to upgrade my phone until 5G and now here it is. The 12 pro looks too big for me. I will go look at the 12 went it is available. The prices are scary high.

I’ll be doing a 12 Pro. I’m currently running an iPhone 6 from 2014, and my strategy is pretty much to buy top of the line when I decide to replace to maximize my lifespan. I’d rather pay an extra $200 to stretch another few years than have to replace every 2-3 years instead. I don’t know that there’s anything particularly compelling about this phone, as I’m always on WiFi and don’t really care about 5G, but it’s just that it’s time for me since the 6 isn’t supported by Apple anymore for iOS updates and is getting really slow with how apps are written today.

This is me as well. I'm holding off on getting a new phone until I'm back traveling for work again sometime next year but I feel the same way.

Rocking a Xs here but don't think I'll get a 12, and will instead wait until next year. The camera improvement is high but the wife's 11 Pro Max is so close to the new 12 Pro it's not really necessary for me to upgrade right now.

I held out on my X for 5G, usually I buy every other year.

I‘ll grab a Pro, I don’t usually care much about the cameras as long as they’re pretty good but I possibly have a lead to do some video editing and being able to just grab 4K 60fps Dolby Vision video on a walk in New York with a phone is awesome. I think if that possibility weren’t emerging I would buy the regular 12.

That magnet wallet looks sweet.

I have an X but am experiencing two annoying problems: FaceID works infrequently, and it's super-annoying to have put in my code nearly every time (I've deleted and reconfigured FaceID several times, and there's no change). And the connector works only sporadically now, too, so I had to buy two wireless charging pads for my home office and my nightstand. (It also means I can't connect to CarPlay, which is less of an issue now that I'm not commuting and actually hardly driving at all!)

I would have been super-excited for the 12 if Apple had included the TouchID either beneath the screen or on the button like they did with the new iPad. I'm also semi-concerned about the functionality of the auto switching between 5G and 4G when 5G isn't available (which it mostly isn't current), and what that could mean for battery life. But given the issues I'm having with my current X, I don't really want to wait for fall 2021 or later to see if TouchID makes a return. I'm targeting the 12 Pro.

For those who are buying when the pre-order window opens Friday, are you buying on the Apple app or directly from your carrier? Is there an advantage one way or the other? If I recall on the Apple app, you can essentially pre pre-order, and then finalize on Friday. But I actually forget how I did it for my X.

i have a X but its starting to fade one. Doesnt hold a charge for shit. Work will upgrade me (Ive been due for a while actually) so I decided to wait for this one.

Would love a pro max, but may settle for pro...depends largely on the models the company makes available

My guess is the development cycle was too far along to integrate the touch ID in to the button like the new iPad, and next year's version includes it. But it's Apple so who the hell knows, they are kinda all over the map these days with products (don't get me started on their mix of lightning/USB-C inputs).

I hate the lack of a fingerprint reader, but I'm not holding out hope for it to return, and like you, I can't/don't want to wait til 2021 to see if it does. That they put USB-C on the newer iPads and didn't implement it here also annoys me.

If you buy from the Apple store, I assume you get an unlocked phone? At least that's what I'm hoping, because that is what is was intending to do. Presently I use Google Fi, but may switch it up in the coming months.

I was committed to my iPhone SE for the long haul until my sister got an 11 Pro and wowed me with the camera. A little surprised folks are not mentioning the Pro version of the camera more in this thread. It is a game-changer if you want near professional-level photos and don't want to lug around a DSLR.

Isn't face ID superior to the fingerprint reader?

To me, no, but I think it's probably personal preference. I don't love the idea of Apple being able to recognize my face, but if I'm being honest, a whole bunch of entities can probably already identify me by my facial features. The privacy genie has been out of the bottle for years, and it's never going back.

I just think it is very convenient to put my finger on the back of the phone and unlock it. It works under any circumstance other than gloves or my finger being wet.

Except for the inability to use it when wearing a mask (obviously a significant current issue), I find FaceID to be superior. I just open my phone without even realizing that it's doing any sort of ID checking. I have a Xs Max and will probably upgrade to the 12 Pro Max. My current phone is still in pretty great condition, but the battery no longer gets me through the day on a single charge.

What I don't understand are the people saying that they were holding out for 5G. LTE is plenty fast enough for me and I really don't see that 5G makes a real difference in my actual use of the phone.

I have an XS. I'm right in the same boat as you - Pro Max is too big, Mini looks like the right size but wait-and-see on the battery life. I also might just hold off one more cycle and get whatever drops in 2021, my XS is still more than serviceable. Since I haven't commuted at all in 9 months, the on-the-go usage has dropped a lot (and my home-office desktop/laptop-on-the-couch usage is through the roof), so I'm not feeling the usual itch to upgrade yet. It'll get stronger when I start seeing people with the new phones in a month, it always does.

This is where I am, too, although I'm leaning toward the 12 mini. (Plus my 14-year-old has an old flip phone that needs replacing, so I can give him the iPhone 7.)

Currently using an iPhone 7 but I'm considering moving up to the iPhone 12 or 12 Pro. The mini would be smaller than my 7 and I'm pretty comfortable with that size so I'm hoping a slight increase in size won't bother me too much.

I haven't looked into this closely yet, as my 8+ from a couple of years ago is still holding on alright. But I wanted to mention that I used to avoid the bigger iPhones because something just didn't feel right about having such a large device in my pocket at all times (hiyo!), but I finally gave in with the 8+ and with how much I use my phone I'm thrilled with the decision. I just looked up the device sizes and the 12 and 12 Pro are both smaller than the 8+ but with a larger display (i.e. notches >> bezels), and the 12 Pro Max is only slightly larger and heavier than the 8+. All of which is to say is that if I were in the market right now and price was no issue, I'd go for the 12 Pro Max. But the prices being what they are, I will try and hold out for another year before plunking down for the 12 Pro Max at a hopefully slightly reduced price and with some early bugs fixed.

Take a look at the SE. My wife did a trade in from the 6 and couldn’t be happier with the camera and battery life.

I’ve had the 7 Plus since release and the performance is still fine; but I’ll be upgrading to the 12 Pro Max due to the screen size and so I can record my kids refusing to go to bed in Dolby Atmos HDR.

EDIT: Those of you with 8s may be in the sweet spot of older phone with strong trade in value. T-Mobile has it in the same tier as IPhone 11 for trade in.

I can see that being a deal breaker. Just make sure that you have coverage in your area with your carrier. Where I live in Central MA, I don't believe I currently would get coverage at home. Plus, I'm still wrapping my head around the limitations of the various offerings as 5G appears to be more of a marketing term and not an actual standard.

I escaped the confines of Leominster for Ventura County over 40 years ago. Verizon 5G has been in Los Angeles for a while. I will see if it is out here in suburbia.

They aren't advertising it, but the prices for the 11 Pro are now $650. It's a fairly similar phone to the 12 but you get a better camera and battery life with the 11 Pro, just no 5G. There's other differences but they probably don't matter for 99% of users.

Only Verizon will give you a deal or a better upgrade but you get a phone that works with Verizon only unless you can unlock it. Apple has discounts for educators.

5G is better because one G more than 4G, of course. Just like an amplifier that goes to 11 is louder than one that goes to 10.

I have been on android (Galaxy s10+) now for quite some time, but I am changing to iPhone simply because my wife/kid have it, most of my family/friends have it and I have a MacBook Pro, iPad, Apple 4k TV that it will work much better with.

Question - I see I can pre-order the 12 Pro right now (love the blue color), but why should I hold out for the Max? I am not really seeing any difference other than the larger screen? What am I missing?

I guess the one other question is, should I even be considering this switch? Galaxy S20 Ultra and Galaxy S20 Note Ultra both seem spec wise that they are superior phones? Although, admittedly I do not know much about what those numbers really represent ... The one thing that has always kept me from going back to iPhone is the added sim card slot that Samsung has; now up to 1TB.

Sort of related... has anyone updated to iOS 14 yet? It's been a month. Are we past the initial buggy release window or is it worth sticking with 13.whatever for now?
There were big battery drain issues that I think still aren't fully corrected. I usually wait until xx.1 is out.

Of course battery life isn't really important since, you know, pandemic and all.

FWIW - Apple cannot recognize your face/finger outside of the device itself. Your face/finger are not uploaded to the cloud or otherwise to Apple's servers, which is why you need to set up FaceID from scratch when you get a new phone. You can't just sync it.

Macrumors has a nice breakdown between the 12 and the Pro here.

Regarding the Pro vs Max: “Note that the iPhone 12 Pro Max provides a few additional improvements over the ‌iPhone 12 Pro‌ beyond a much larger 6.7-inch display. The ‌iPhone 12 Pro‌ Max also offers a wider optical zoom range, sensor-shift optical image stabilization, a telephoto lens with a larger aperture, and longer battery life.”

Thank you. As a photo enthusiast, aspiring amateur photographer in my (very little) spare time, I will probably hold out for the Pro Max. The idea of being able to capture images in RAW format as well is a nice plus.

No problem. I'm not an enthusiast, but my kids are ages 3 years and 8 months. I'm going to upgrade, so I want the best camera they offer. We have an awesome Sanyo camera for home photo shoots, but my phone takes the majority of the photos and videos. Whatever premium I'll pay will be made up with peace of mind on the photos and vids. Plus, my eyesight is increasingly Mr Magoo-ish. The extra screen size is appreciated.

Yeah, I have my real DSLR camera and lenses, but sometimes it is just easier to shoot with a phone - especially in places that do not allow DSLR cameras with pro lenses. Screen size I was a tad concerned the Pro at 6.1" would feel too small, as I am used to the S10+ which is 6.4"

Sprint is offering me the pro for $14 a month x30 months. I've had the 8 since release day, but it's seen better days.
