iPhone 6 - BFD

People claimed that the 5 and 5S bent in their pockets too. Call me a fanboy if you will, but I'm willing to bet those people either sat on the phones in their back pockets, leaned over some kind of hard edge putting their weight on the phones, or crushed them against the steering wheel getting into a car or something. After the same stories at the release of the 5, bending iPhones was never a significant issue and was limited to those who were careless.

Meh, my 4 year old android had a BAC (Boner Activation Chip), why is Apple always holding back features? *zenter*

Just from my own experience, I haven't had a connector stop working on a phone since my LG enV. That includes two BlackBerrys (Storm and Tour), the Motorola Droid, and iPhones 4, 4S, 5, and 5S. Is refurbishing a phone really that carbon-intensive that most all phones should essentially leak power just to prevent charger connectors from potentially breaking? I would guess connector failure is exceedingly rare, anyway. Generally when a charging connection is failing is because there's dust buildup in the slot. Also, don't a good amount of Android phones come with a charge port cover anyway?

Now I am not implying this is Apple's motivation, but merely asking why we are so wasteful just for the sake of making something already convenient even more so. With hundreds of millions of 1440 mAh+ batteries being charged, the amount of energy being wasted adds up. I also think that this is the issue with most (relatively) nascent technologies, and I don't think there's a rush by Apple to bring it to market until it's past that extended beta stage.
You have had 7 cellular phones since your LG and are concerned about the environmental impact of wired v. Wireless charging.

Is it really surprising that a metal phone deforms when you bend it, and a plastic one mostly bounces back (though it was a bit warped)? Pretty sure you can bend any metal smartphone or tablet if you really want to try hard enough or if you do something careless enough with it.

Trying to plug in iPhones and iPads on my bedside table in the dark really sucked with the old iPod connector, but since they moved to the reversible Lightning connector is a complete nonissue. You don't even have to worry about getting it right-side up. The improvement from that to throwing it on a pad seems pretty minimal.
It really sucked? Like, is anyone reading this stuff?

What's the negative environmental impact on selling your old phone on eBay and buying a new one? It's not like he's tossing his old phones into a landfill.

Are you asking me what the negative environmental impact of unnecessary consumer culture is?

I am not an environmentalist, but calling out M89th for a stupid fucking argument.

I lost the Tour at the airport in Budapest; the Droid died. All of the other phones not named the Storm (which has a broken screen) are still in use. The 4 by a SoSHer, the 4S by my best friend, and the 5 by whoever bought it via Gazelle. So the environmental impact is a net zero more phones in circulation, and at the very least two of them getting over three years of use (not counting the two newer ones which likely will as well).

Now that's out of the way, can we talk about how wasted energy from wireless charging without non sequiturs from the peanut gallery?

Yeah, to me it's pretty no brainer that there are far more used phones than ever get purchased, and keeping an old phone an extra 6 months will benefit the environment far more than the small amount of energy lost from wireless charging over a long period would.

I'm not saying Apple is great at this. I'm commenting that it's a weird criticism in the mobile device arena where hardware is forced into being obsolete on a regular basis.

It's also a matter of developers making apps and deciding which platform they belong on. If a developer makes a game that utilizes features in a new device, don't complain about apple or android's old device not supporting it.

My point was in part that the early adopter on apple hasn't got much, so before you rush for a apple watch, just remember the second generation was a pretty big improvement in many apple products and wasn't that long in coming.
They have rushed the release and improved it rapidly before (eg if I had an ipad 2 and a camera etc I might still use it for face time / skype etc). It's a sad but inevitable part of buying new tech, but that was the quickest an item that expensive had been no longer supported for me, but more that the first iphone was pretty crappy at being a phone among other things, the frist ipod was eh, the first ipad was quickly significantly improved etc.
Though to be fair I would think that would be a more compelling argument if they were trying to get it out for christmas, then I'd be very wary.

Some nice options there. I was originally intending to go sans case this time around but I think with the protruding camera lens and since its already really slim I'll do it.
The Spigen Aluminum Fit case is pretty sweet and hits my key features. Very slim, exposed physical buttons with just enough front bezel to lay it face down. Only thing  don't like is the large "Spigen" logo but I can deal.

Mildly inane question - how do I use Swiftkey for iOS without picking up my finger between words? People seem to claim it will recognize discrete words, but so far, it's not even trying?

If you have a new iPhone 6 or 6+ you might want to avoid updating to 8.0.1. Apparently it's causing issues with cellular connectivity, so probably best to wait for a fixed version.

edit: I see I got scooped while typing up my post.

iOS updates the past two years have been really awful, haven't they? I mean, I don't recall iOS 4, 5 or 6 having nearly as many bugs as 7 and 8 have had - especially the 8 bugs that have made phones useless essentially.

I'll rock 7.2.x on my 5 until I upgrade in a year or so maybe.

I've never had a case before because I didn't want to add bulk to an already thin phone. But with the 6, I feel like I have to. Maybe it's the thinness of the 6 or the additional width, or both, but I've never been more afraid that I'm going to drop a phone that I am with the 6.  I ordered the case above, except in "smooth black" (which also helps to somewhat to conceal the name/logo).

7.1 was massively better than 7.0.x, just in terms of responsiveness and speed alone.

In general the x.0 releases have always been kinda buggy, especially on the new phones released with the new S/W until they release x.0.1 with some fixes.

8 has been very buggy on my iPad. The LinkedIn app in particular is all kinds of fucked up. Obviously that's a third party issue though.

Probably a bad idea with the 53 vulnerabilities Apple disclosed that are fixed in iOS 8, that still exist in 7.1.x....

It's Gorilla Glass. You don't need any more protection than that.

A grain of sand in your pocket will easily scratch Gorilla glass. That being said, I would never put a shield on my screen. They all look like crap.

I'm a bit confused by this. I use TechArmor, and it's fine, but I'm not super discerning perhaps? What looks bad?

The screen resolution / brightness takes a hit no matter the brand of shield.

Is there an easy way to find out which apps integrate with the Health app? I want to try some but have no idea how to find them.

How could Steve Jobs have possibly known that customers wouldn't pinch the device between their thumb and pointer finger as intended?

Do not take it out of the box. The cellophane wrapping blocks the signal from Apple HQ that could trigger the auto update, even when the phone is off (see previous discussion about Apple's new NSA-resistant encryption). Instead, store it in cool, dark place -- like next to where you keep your Cabernet -- until after the November mid-term congressional elections.

8.0.2 came out last night, fixing the issue with the 8.0.1 release. 8.0.0 was fine too, just had a few random bugs they were trying to fix with the 8.0.1 release that ended up breaking shit.

edit: I put 8.0.2 on both my iPhone 6 and iPad Air, and both seem to be running fine.
