Looks like you can stratch that math. I based it on what Apple's slides said in the presentation, but the numbers on their website are significantly higher monthly payments.

The slide was:

Their website says $32.64 for an iPhone 6S and $36.58 for a 6S+. Someone really fucked up.

I thought the $27/month is simply if you want to split the cost up into 24 monthly payments, but don't need the option to upgrade every 12 months.

Is the confusion around unlocked vs not? Unlocked, which they touted, will be more expensive than Next simply because Next is a locked phone at first.

As a comparison, I tried to figure out how much a 128GB 6S would cost on AT&T Next 12, and it would be 20 payments of $42.45 (basically spreading the $849 cost into 20 payments), or $509.40 at the 12 month mark. Apple says it would cost 24 payments of $40.75 for a total of $978, or $489 at the 12 month mark. So if you upgrade right on the 12 month mark you would save $11. Otherwise you're still essentially paying the $99 for the "free" AppleCare.

Edit: also, you can get the $27/month for the 6S if you buy the 16GB model, and use AT&T Next 24.

Assume this is with taxes/fees included?

No, I think derekson was just looking at the wrong slide. That slide says how much an iPhone 6S would cost broken up into 24 monthly installments. This was the slide with the leasing info, which says that it starts at $32/month:

Surprised no release date announced for 10.11
End of September, it was in the "top secret" email that they opened during the 3D touch demo.

Fresh off the boat
By signing up for the iPhone Upgrade Plan you commit to paying $32.45/mo for 2 years = $779

In exchange for that $779, you get:
$649 unlocked iPhone 6S+ 16 GB
$99 AppleCare
($31 left over)

You also have the right at any point after 12 months to trade in your phone. In exchange for trading in your new phone, you get a new iPhone and your existing contract ends and a new 2-year contract begins.

So if you trade in after exactly 12 months, you commit to an additional $389, give up your existing iPhone 6S+, and get an iPhone 7 with AppleCare+ in return.

The way I'm seeing it, you're paying $31 to guarantee that you can trade in your iPhone 6S+ with an extra year of AppleCare a year from now for $389. That trade-in value goes down by $32/mo if you wait longer than the 12 months to upgrade.

You can sell an unlocked iPhone 6 on Swappa right now for $400+, so I'm thinking it's still a better deal to buy the phone using their normal installment plan (or outright), re-sell it yourself in a year (or longer), and pay full price for the upgrade then.

Apple also does trade-ins online and at their stores. Right now the online quote on a good condition unlocked iPhone 6 is $325. So you'd save about $30 with the iPhone Upgrade Program, assuming once again that you upgrade after exactly 12 months.

Ah, that makes sense. So I screwed up when I went looking for the numbers and found an image of the wrong slide. my bad.

Ultimately it look like the Apple deal is better if you plan to actually utilize the upgrade at the 12 month mark, but if you take the deal to the 24 month term you end up actually paying for the AppleCare+.

If you don't at all care about the locked phone while you have it, I believe Next 18 saves a little still. If you pay off Next they unlock so that feature if you don't use it yourself isn't a key point here. You are actually paying more because the unlocked phone is more expensive than the locked version.

BTW pre-order launches at 12:01 PDT Saturday. I'm glad, I can wake up at 2:55 a.m. here on the east coast, order, and go back to sleep without having to wake up and go to work.

Has anyone ever tried to upgrade with Verizon during one of these midnight pre-order periods?  I've had my Galaxy S3 for a few years and thinking of finally upgrading to a 6S+.  Is it as simple as going into MyVerizon at midnight and clicking 'upgrade phone'?  I've been a little lost with all the plan changing Verizon has been doing.

I didn't see mention of Amazon Instant Video on the new TV. God knows I would like to use a TV UI made by Apple instead of the idiots at Sony and Samsung who made my Blu Ray players. Anyone know anything about Amazon for Apple TV?
My guess (hope) is they weren't one of the developers who got early access to the API, but that an app will come eventually.

I've done it a couple of times, but I've used the Apple Store App on my phone. It accesses your Verizon account and it's a lot better and smoother than going through Verizon.

Edit: In your case, without access to the Apple Store App, I would recommend going through the Apple web site instead, but at the start of the last few preorder periods, the web site was a lot harder to access than the app.

Trying to decide whether to make the switch from Android (2013 Moto X) to an iPhone. My work pays for an iPhone (I have to pay $100 for a 64 gb version). I'm intrigued by the Nexus 5 coming out soon. I love the cards on Google Now and the fact that I will get alerts on things based on my searches/interests. I also love Active Display on the Moto X (I can move my phone slightly and see the time and whether I have any notifications).

Anything like these exist on iOS?

Not just APIs. There's also the small matter of needing the actual hardware, and Amazon is a direct competitor in this space. I guess hope is all we can hang our hats on right now for an app from Amazon. Not time to buy just yet.

True. I'm hoping they develop one, it sucks right now having to switch from my appletv to my Xbox when I want to watch something on Amazon.

Now I really don't get the 32 GB size on the Apple TV. Apparently apps can only have 200 MB of permanent data and need to have the capability to dynamically grab any additional data resources from the cloud when needed so the device can manage its space and remove that data from local storage when necessary. With such passive management of the onboard storage, I don't get why its standard size is twice that of an entry-level iPhone.

Damn that sucks. I completely missed them adding an activation fee to Next. Hell one of the perks they used to advertise for Next was the lack of activation fee. It's still $15 vs $45 for a contract plan, but that blows.

I can't see Apple TV offering an Amazon app. The best hope is that this new Apple TV will be able to get jailbroken like the Apple TV 2, and then maybe someone can port an Amazon app to it, along with making it possible to run XBMC/Kodi.

You can Airplay amazon video from an iPhone or iPad or iPod Touch. That's what I do if I want to watch something from Amazon Prime. It's inferior to have an app on the Apple TV, but IMO it beats swapping to Xbox (or in my case PS4).

I think it's in Amazon's interest to make a Prime app for Apple TV. Yeah it competes with a device they make, but they know plenty of their users use Apple products and making Prime more accessible means more subscribers in the end. I'll be surprised if they don't develop an app some point in the next few months.

I bought a roku stick for $40 purely because Apple TV didn't have the Amazon app. Short of movies I want to purchase or already have and want to watch, I can't remember the last time I chose to boot up Apple TV over Roku. The interface on Netflix and other apps are far superior and they have had the search function over all apps for years.

Roku has definitely been a superior product for a few years at this point if you aren't tied into the Apple ecosystem and really interested in features like Airplay Mirroring. They really let the Apple TV 3 rot on the vine for way too long. I got one when it was new and it was a solid device at that point, but in the years since then they literally haven't modernized the UI at all. The new one is a huge jump forward, but I'm not sure most people want to pay $150 for a streaming box at this point when you can get a Fire stick, Roku stick, or Chromecast for <$50. We'll see though. I'll likely get one after Christmas since various people will probably give me apple gift cards that i can throw towards it.

FWIW Apple's phone lease plan is a loan from Citizens Bank and requires a hard credit pull. You have to pick up at an Apple store to go that route.

I don't want any CR pull so to Next I'll go.

I'm completely tied into the Apple ecosystem and perfectly happy to be. iPhone, iPad, MacBook, iPod - I'm a complete drone and love it. I'm not one that would ever use the watch enough to make it worth it, so that's not on the table, but otherwise I love the integration across the products. That being said, I don't use mirroring and the majority of my streaming is Netflix or Amazon. I like the interface of Roku, so I use that and am perfectly happy. If I want to buy a movie I'll use Apple TV so that my owned content is in one place, but if nothing else at least I don't need to reboot the Roku every fifth time I use it, which seems to the case with the Apple TV. If they made serious advances in performance and UI, that's awesome and I wish they did it earlier. Meantime I'll probably stick with my current set up as I have no use for gaming or storage on the actual set top box.

Looks like I'll be deciding between AT&T Next and just buying it outright. Is there any advantage to buying it outright? E.g. can it be unlocked if I do so?

Yeah I saw that earlier too, and was going to post about it. I don't really want a credit pull on my record to get a $700 phone. That's kinda absurd.

I'm currently debating between Next or another 2 year contract (if they'll still let me do that, i know right now with a 6/6+ you can't get the contract if you buy through Apple Store, only at AT&T).

Yeah you can get an unlocked phone if you buy it outright, and you're also then free to change carriers any time you please.

iPad is running iOS while the new TV will be running a separate OS.

Still is pretty painless to just aircast the Amazon content from the iPad to the TV though.

Android has an app for phones/tablets, but there's no (good) way to use it with Chromecast.

Their phone effort may be dead, but Amazon is still really pushing their Fire Stick.

I've been waiting for 6 months to upgrade since my iPhone5 came off contract, was planning on going with the 6s, but today's reveal actually has me thinking of giving Android a shot.  Granted, there were almost no surprises because I've been following leaks and rumors for the past couple months.  3D touch is kinda cool, I guess, but I'm not seeing much value over long-press as seen on other mobile OS'.  I'm sure it's value will grow over time, but it just didn't "wow" me.

I also found myself tired of the Apple Event shtick, and a little turned off by the company in general.  Jony Ive's going on about how the iPad Pro's bigger size is an "amplification" of everything we love about iPad (just as he said the mini was a "concentration" of the same) was, for reasons I can't pinpoint, really annoying to me.  Tim Cook may have said "Amazing" 300 times.  All these dudes with untucked shirts.

Sitting in my living room is an AppleTV (3rd gen) that I never use since buying Amazon's FireTV.  I'm thinking of selling the ATV and breaking away completely from the Apple ecosystem.  I can't see how Apple's movie & TV service competes with Amazon, especially if you have Prime, no matter how nice the hardware and interface on the new ATV may be.  And again, Apple's device will cost 50-100% more than the competition's.

I just didn't see anything I want to own in this presentation, and I find myself seeing Apple as a little stale.  Their tech just doesn't seem to stand as high above the competition as I once felt it did.  Did anyone else have a similar reaction?  Am I just tired and cranky today?  Maybe I'm just fatigued with tech in general.
upgrading from a 5 to 5S for free works for me
I would be fine upgrading to these new features in 12-18 months when prices come down (and Apple announces the iPhone 7)

The event schtick is not new, it's their style and it is what it is to me.  As someone who uses all the platforms for work reasons, I'd just caution you to consider what you'd be giving up as well.  There are people for whom switching makes sense, but Apple's stuff does "just work" far more frequently and more coherently than an ecosystem you'll cobble together from google and other services.  Now, for some people, that's a good thing, they can gain more control and personalization in exchange for simplicity.  It's fun to use the other platforms, I enjoy dabbling in Android and even Windows Phone from time to time but I always end up coming back to iPhone as my daily driver because the friction on the other platforms remains a little too high.  Google has come a really long way, though, it's incredibly close these days.  In the end, I always end up coming back to most 3rd party apps being written for iOS first and generally being more stable and reliable on iOS as a result.

I see your point, but seeing how cheap the Fire Stick is (heck, I bought two so that when I travel I always have a way to access videos on the hotel TV), I always thought it was being pushed as a means to encourage people to sign up for Amazon Prime - in which case the cannibalization of the hardware sales from offering an Apple TV app is more than offset by the gains in a more important part of the Amazon business.

If I already have Next, how do I switch to the iPhone upgrade plan? Essentially, I would sell my current phone to pay off next and then preorder with Apple?

I can't recommend this Spigen Exact Fit Non-Slip case enough. IMO the texture is perfect. It has just enough tackiness to give it a good grip without feeling all rubbery. It looks and feels very close to my brother's OEM Apple leather case (which is nice too but stupid expensive). I also love that all physical buttons are exposed and entire bottom is open.

Seconded on the Speigen.  I got it for my 6 after a recommendation (I think here), and it's been perfect. Would absolutely recommend it. No real shock protection but it does give you the tactile feel you need. I had never previously had a case on any phone, but with the 6's new size and slick backing, I was concerned about dropping it. The Speigen solves that problem without compromising the form factor/thinness of the 6 -- I can put the phone in my suit jacket pocket and not look like I'm carrying a brick. Plus it was less than $10. Win-win all around.

That looks almost identical to my existing Incipio, thanks! I wish they had it in red though, oh well.

So am I being dense, or are the companies just double-dipping now with these new plans? What I mean is it appears for Verizon I'd be paying my subsidized phone price, plus pay for the phone on top of it for $x a month.
