Trivial Pursuit is one of the better pass-n-play games, too.

If you buy a navigation app, do you have to pay a monthly fee, or is it just a one time thing?

One time fee of ~$100. The Navigon version also has an in app option to purchase the real time traffic feature. It is a one time fee of $20 I believe.

Does anyone have any experience with the Sim City game?

I'd love to have that on my phone.

Got it in August and spent most of August/September doing nothing but playing that GD game. Very nicely ported and very feature-rich. It will burn through your battery quicker than most apps, though.

I'd like more info on that game as well.

Also, is my score of 67 planes landed in Flight Control any good? I see some on the leader boards with 100-200, but that seems impossible... any tips/hints?

You slow it down to a crawl and use the first easy field. I got barely over 100 with that plan, but it gets tense. That game is one of the best time wasters around on the iPhone. I have no idea how anyone got near 200.

I just think the app is well done - especially if you love the game. Laddie told me he thinks it is slow and clunky, but it probably was upgraded after he used it (it was a while ago).

Very addicting.

Shit, I did 135 in at KPHL and thought I was Jesus. Well that's a kick in the balls.

I'm up to 466 in Dactyl if people are looking for stupidly addicting games. I thought that was pretty good, too, although YouTube tells me people have cracked the four digit mark.

Can someone please recommend a good Calendar and Task Manager app? One thing that bugs me about the built-in calendar apps is the limit on when I can set alarms to go off. For some events, I 'd like to be reminded they are coming up more than 2 days in advance. TIA.

I use Informant. It syncs nicely with Google calendar.

Randomly, I tried the 2 fairly new Dragon apps. One is for speech-2-text, and the other for speech searching on numerous engines (google, wiki, youtube, twitter, etc). They are fucking sweet IMHO...and free.

Addicted. It's somewhat buggy in that a few times I've not been permitted to play actual words that can be found in the dictionary. It also sometimes accepts "words" that aren't actually words at all. Still, I love it.

Anyone have a recommendation for an app to keep track and rate wines/beers that you have drunk? I'd like to be able add labels that aren't in its database.

There are a few. The wine ones all have their upsides and downsides. I use Velvet Wine because I like controlling a cellar. A lot of folks use Drync but I found it cludgy. Most have a few version (except Drync I believe)

I'm not really happy with any of their ability to come up with wines. They rely on user entry for the most part and folks enter shit in different ways, it's annoying

Anybody know of an app that syncs with Outlook Tasks and Notes? I know about iMLite, but you can't edit Tasks on the phone - you mark something as "Complete", but it doesn't save or sync back to your computer. The full version won't work on the phone, even though I use the exact same settings.

That is interesting (and I just checked the price) because I had to pay $9.99 for it on July 31, 2009. I wonder if they give it away after the season ends and start charging once there is new content. And I also wonder if they expect me to buy a 2010 version.

There's always been a free version. The 10 bucks gets you additional features (Like audio for all the games for example).

It's free now, and into Spring Training. Last year, the 2008 MLB At-Bat App, around Spring Training, became the MLB At-Bat 2009 Lite app through an update. Then I had to purchase the MLB At-Bat 2009 app. So, in short, yes, you'll have to re-buy it, so to speak.

I ended up paying twice for the audio since I had already had access through Red Sox Nation. I downloaded the app just after I bought the iTouch immediately before going on a trip. Maybe I simply should have gone to mlb.com and logged in through it to listen to games. I need to look at my options more closely this year. Thanks.

DALLAS, Feb. 4 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — AT&T* today announced that its 3G mobile broadband network will support Sling Media, Inc.’s SlingPlayer Mobile™ app.

Sling Media, a wholly owned subsidiary of EchoStar Corporation (Nasdaq: SATS), originally developed its wireless app to make efficient use of 3G network bandwidth – and to conserve the finite wireless spectrum available to the wireless industry. Since mid December 2009, AT&T has been testing the app and has recently notified Sling Media — as well as Apple – that the optimized app can run on its 3G network. The SlingPlayer Mobile app already is available for use today on AT&T’s Wi-Fi network, the nation’s largest with more than 20,000 hotspots.

Has anyone purchased a stylus for the iPhone or iPod Touch? My daughter loves the app Brushes. I was thinking that it would be easier to draw with a stylus but all the ones I have seen online seem to have the diameter of a finger. Brushes looks like an app that will be awesome on the iPad.

A couple great games were released for the iPhone in the past couple weeks.

Plants vs. Zombies - $2.99, probably the best game I've played on the iPhone.
Final Fantasy - $8.99, remake of the original Final Fantasy for NES from 1987.

Plants vs Zombies is one of the silliest yet most addictive games I have ever played. I love this game. I also love Dexter for a good storyboard game.

The slingplayer app is kind of remarkably good over the 3G connection only. I'm impressed in how effectively it manages the bandwidth issues.

Maybe this is redundant with the iPhone mega thread, but I thought a thread specifically for iPhone applications would be handy.

The things I'm loving about the iPhone apps are those related to its navigation features:

ArcGIS: is free, comes with multiple map sources -- including US topographic maps -- and self-locates. I wish the compass feature was integrated with the map usage, but this application is really pretty awesome. We were hiking on some trails, got a little lost, brought up the US topo maps with our location on them and bang, back out.

Motion GPS Drive: is cheap and has pretty straightforward and relatively inexpensive voice navigation. It's free without voice navigation. The problem I had with it was making calls while navigating, which didn't seem to work. Had to restart my phone to call out after navigating with it. There seem other options for GPS voice navigation on the iPhone -- anyone tried any?

Spyglass (no link): Has anyone used this? I'm interested, as it's described as an "AR tracker, compass, sextant, rangefinder, gps, maps, stars)" and apparently can geo-locate photos and things like that, which could be pretty handy.

AroundMe: really useful application -- we've used it several times.

Golf GPS: I haven't used any, but I want one. Anyone have any recommendations?

What's the best bird call identifier? I have iBird 15, which is a trial version, but it seems a little meh to me. Is there a shazam-type application for bird calls?

For star/constellation identification I have Star Walk, which seems okay, but it seems to lack certain options, like a red light feature and different music. Pretty nifty though.

I'd like something that logs my walks -- distances, locations, frequencies, dates. I haven't really found anything for that. Trails GPS is most of the way there, but seems to lack features to track frequency. Anyone use that AccuTerra app?

For games, I've played a little Call of Duty - Zombie, which is okay, but I have trouble with the thumb controls. I've tried the Future Guns shooter application, which is not at all interesting. Real Racing is a pretty good driving game. PalmHeroes is, so far, incomprehensible to me. Looks terrible. The iChess Lite application is pretty good, and I'm considering upgrading to the Pro version to keep games and stuff.

Smithsonian Channel application is quite cool, but you need a good connection it seems.

The Wolfram application is kind of crazy/amazing/odd. You can do all sorts of complex data analysis with it, and it will do a pretty good job parsing questions. For example, you can ask it the weight of a grain of rice, and it will tell you how much, in various metrics, and give links to rice.

My local tv station WTNH-8 has a pretty good iPhone app for local news, and the NYTimes and BBC apps are useful as well.

The Kindle and iBooks apps are both great -- I actually prefer the Kindle one so far. iBookShelf is a sort of useful personal library organizer but seems slow and awkward. Is there an alternative?

Red Laser is an amazing app that reads bar codes and looks up products. We used it this weekend to price softball gloves for the kids. Worked great.

The MLB At Bat 2010 and Fangraphs applications are wonderful. I check them both constantly. Who knew Fangraphs had an iPhone app?

Anyway, just thought I'd start a thread here. What do people like? What are the good driving and golf gps applications?

I agree, it's a decent app especially for the price. I paid $19.99 for the CoPilot Live NA, however, and am really happy with that choice. My buddy bought the TomTom app for his iTouch and bought the special TomTom holder (with GPS chip) and is THRILLED with his choice. Too rich for my blood.

GolfShot GPS - awesome app! They also announced a range finder app yesterday for $19.99 that looks awesome.

My wife an I became addicted to Angry Birds while she was in the hospital. I've heard Plants vs. Zombies is also great, but haven't tried it.

Love, love, love the MLB at Bat app. Too cheap to purchase the mlb.tv subscription, but wouldn't mind going halves with someone to add the video feature. Being able to choose the audio feed for every game, watch the game play out in the game cast, etc. Awesome app.

Anyway, just thought I'd start a thread here. What do people like? What are the good driving and golf gps applications?
Another suggestion is to go to appshopper.com and create a wishlist. It will e-mail you whenever the apps you want go down in price. I'm sure there are other similar sites, but I've had a lot of luck with this one.

As a first time iPhone customer I was going to start a similar thread. It will be nice to have suggestions in one place.

I haven't downloaded much here's what I've got so far:

The Amazon app: Pretty handy for impulse buys.

Dragon Dictation: Handy for speaking texts or emails. Fairly accurate so far.

Bloomberg: Slick financial interface, although I've heard good things about The Mint.

Trapster: Looks pretty robust for a pig-busting app, but I haven't put it use yet. I'll report back soon.

RunKeeper: Cool little tracking app for logging runs and bike rides. I have the free version and it's been cool so far.

Chipotle App: Because I want my burrito to be ready for me.

Pow: Basically makes punching noises. Helpful for demostrating my unhappiness with my girlfriend without resorting to the whole domestic abuse stuff.

Opera mini: alternative browser for Edge service. Haven't had to use it yet.

Flight Control: $0.99 game that's completely addictive. The game I've played the most so far. Seems to be a bit of a battery whore, though.

Doodle Jump: Also $0.99 and was my #1 game until Flight Control.

Angry Birds: Also $0.99. Fun, but I haven't played it in a while.

Instapaper: Cool app for saving webpages for reading offline (on a plane, or somewhere without service). It's $4.99 but worth it if you do a good amount of surfing.

Other usual standbys: Skype, Pandora, Red Laser, MLB, NPR news and music, cheap gas, flickster.
