I have an old Ipod that works perfectly fine.  However, for whatever reason, i cannot access the songs in my library of music on my PC (Lenovo Thinkpad, new in the last year).  I sign in with my apple id and password, but no matter what I do, I cannot click on any songs nor can I purchase or delete anything.  The list gets pulled up, but it's as if the songs are all blocked out.   I'm probably not describing this as well as I could, but if anyone has bright ideas, I'm all ears.

Did you authorize this computer via iTunes?
hmmmm....itunes was downloaded onto this computer.  When I got prompts I authorized yes.   Is there some other authorization I'd need to do?

Ok but you can't import songs from an iPod onto your computer unless you use a 3rd party program (like Senuti 2). All of your iTunes purchases should be available from your computer to iPod but the reverse (i.e. iPod songs imported to computer) is not allowed.

For instance, if I found an old iPod with tons of old songs/CD's, etc., I could NOT add these to my iTunes library…unless I used a 3rd party program.

I'm not sure if this is the problem/question…I hope I'm understanding this correctly.

Right. I assume your current iTunes libraries/iPods are all working correctly?

The newer songs you want to play are on your old iPod right? I assume that your old iPod library was never synced with you newer laptop. Can you currently play any songs? If it's just the new (old) iPod library you found that is unavailable it's because your iTunes doesn't recognize the new iPod library as music you own. It will read your iPod and show you the contents but won't allow you to play/import/transfer these songs.

I hope I'm not making this worse for you...

assuming that's the case (not sure it is), what would you have me do?  I "synced" the ipod and it said it worked, but still to no avail

Sorry…took kids to movies...

Ok if you have an iPod that has songs that are not in your library, Apple does NOT allow those songs to be downloaded into iTunes. You can still play them on an MP3 player (obviously) but not through your computer. It's frustrating, I know.
A few years ago I borrowed a friend's iPod to download his playlists onto my computer but could not do it. He had tons of obscure but really cool stuff i wanted but would never have purchased. I used a program called Senuti 2 to reverse transfer the songs from my (his) iPod onto my iTunes playlist and it worked great. i can't remember if it's free or not but the program worked really well. Super easy to download and transfer files. This was a few years ago so there may be something better out there now.
Good luck, hope it works.

Thanks but I have a more fundamental problem.  I cannot access the songs that are in my library, from my computer.  The Ipod and the computer have the same exact songs.  I cannot access them on my computer either to delete some or to buy more.  It's as if I'm locked out of my library on my computer.

For some reason do you have 5 other computers authorized to play your iTunes songs?(maybe built up over the years) You might want to try "Deauthorize all computers" and then try to play a song on this computer, which will prompt you to authorize whenever you play the first song.

Whenever I get a new computer and transfer my songs there via a iPad, I always deauthorize all my computers and then authorize as needed.

But it seems like your iTunes as a whole is the problem. I'm not sure if this will help but I did want to mention it.

NatsTown!
go to your account at iTunes and check how many devices you have authorized. I think you can have 5. de-authorize one of them, and then it might work? Or did you already try that?

(or what JohnMD says)
