Are we giving credit for drafting Drake Maye?

IMO we should not, that was obvious as hell, but that would about be it.
Absolutely should. There were a LOT of legit people saying they should trade out and build the roster, or trade down and take a lesser QB. You have to credit guys for not getting too cute and sticking with their theory that QB is everything and Maye was a franchise QB.

Pretty sure I'm the only one who feels this way but I didn't think the OL was terrible today as it's been recently. Low bar I know but considering they're path work, I saw a decent number of clean pockets and Maye did complete 26 passes. I don't remember a large percent of them being from scrambles. And only 2 sacks. Well the running game did suck so there's that. Anyhow, also wondering if we might have something in Ben Brown at center.
They did better protecting Maye but traded that for being completely unable to open a running lane all day. And they still let Maye get creamed on a "we're not dead yet!" down.

I think the starting 5 was pretty okay, they really fell off after Sow came in for Robinson. Couldn't run at all, and limited the options such that we had a ton of dump-offs and screens for the bulk of the 2nd and 3rd quarters.

The defense. And I mean the players — coaches aren’t expected to teach professional players to tackle. And I’m not sure Trevor Lawrence needs to wash his jersey; that kind of ineptitude can’t be explained by scheme alone.

Offense looked ok — roughly 7 yards per attempt per Maye, only two sacks (one of which was when they were in desperation mode late), no turnovers. Not going to get excited until they do it against a better team, but there’s something to build on.

Obviously the special teams fuck-up was big too.

So, we should not continue to play if the game is out of hand? Because last week this thread said the opposite.

Anyway, you know how this defense gets better? When Barmore and Bentley aren't hurt. This team didn't have a lot of talent, and when you remove 2 of the guys that habe it, shit is gonna go downhill.

Pretty funny, on Holley's post-game, the original poll question was something approximating "Who is the weakest link" with the choices being Offensive Line, Wide Receivers, or Defense. The option to add "Coaching" was added later and took it in a runaway at 81%.

Maybe the GM should have guys on the roster who aren’t practice squad caliber as primary backups. Or the coaches could perhaps teach the backups how to play a bit better.

It’s the NFL, you’re going to lose starters to injury. It doesn’t excuse the terrible fundamentals or the terrible roster construction

They went into the season/camp (before Barmore was lost) Ekuale and Pharms as key members of the DL rotation. They went into camp with McMillian as the only off ball backup because they let Mack Wilson go and replaced him with a guy (Takitaki) who was known to be injured at the time of signing.

How about, instead of signing an injured Takitaki, sign a healthy off ball backup? Instead of relying on a 28 year old practice squad and career backup JAG to be your primary rotation, draft or sign someone in the off-season.

Eh, I actually disagree with that. Coaching sucks, but they had a great coach last year and won 4 games by a combined 14 points. The talent situation is dire, they go into every game needing to climb a mountain just to be on equal footing with even the average teams.

If my choices were Maye looking like a keeper and losing and Maye looking like Brissett and winning, I know where I come down.

Last season, with little talent, the team stunk. This year, with little talent, this team still stinks. I'm not willing to bury the coaches yet.

He put a little too much air on it and left it inside, not a great throw. Polk should probably hold on, but considering he got hit really hard in the head (college they would have thrown that guy out), I think without the drop issues last week nobody thinks twice.
I saw two different replay angles on that play, and it looked to me like the defender drilled Polk directly in the shoulder blade and not the head. Would like to see more on that, though.

This, same goes for Wolf whom people ITT expect to atone for nearly a decade of BB the GMs sins in a single off season.

100% i got to watch the game Maye has it but other than that u have 2-3 win talent mayo makes 2017-18 vance joseph look like tomlin
Actually, I'm adding a new #1..... Bob Kraft.

This feels like a franchise without a plan, and everything about moving on from BB was done wrong.
They hired a coach before the GM (almost always bad process)
They hired the 3rd man on the defensive coach depth chart without playcalling experience (Gross)
They didn't interview any candidates (gross)
They promoted from within at GM (shaky, but okay maybe not bad)
They promoted the 4th (maybe 5th?) man on the defensive coach depth chart to DC (really green, especially with a green HC)
These are fair points but also the worst possible read on the process. I was supportive of Kraft moving on from Bill and the Mayo/Wolf hires. Maybe it doesn't work out. But, I don’t think it was necessarily malpractice to try to maintain and modernize Bill’s overall system and culture while also concluding that Bill himself had just passed his sell date and, offensively anyway, allowed the organization to become dysfunctional with attrition in his coaching staff.

if Mayo does turn out to be a dud and can’t turn things around, maybe it will have taken an acolyte of Bill’s to prove we need to start fresh. It’s not like we have all this evidence that Bill’s system worked outside of New England (and Cleveland to some extent) or with other HCs.

If nothing else, it looks like we have our QB.

Agreed, though it's more than those two. Lawrence Guy was let go, replaced by White, who seems better in a creepers front where he doesn't have to hold the line to stop RBs. A move to get another true DL would have made sense, but they did not, so now they're susceptible to gut runs all day long.

Get a lead, kill time, game over. The Patriots are now officially the worst team in football.

I think most are just comparing it to last year's team (which also sucked), and thus far they look less prepared, less creative and the roster isn't more talented. I don't think anyone expected them to contend or look great year one coming off of what they had. But the Commanders seemingly turned it around somewhat under similar circumstances. Wasn't an impossible task even if that was the standard.

This. They are getting materially better QB play and are somehow significantly worse. That is pretty unusual given the importance of QB play in the league and speaks to more talent deterioration on the roster and poor coaching.

It's not "somehow".

It's a bad OL that got worse through injuries and a decent defense that has lost 3 of it's most talented guys that they expected to contribute this year.

Id say the OL has a lot to do with Wolf's decisions no? He made the decisions to bring in a bunch of guys who were complete flame outs. It was a high risk strategy and its failed in a big way.

Do we think Jacksonville being on London time all week was a material advantage?

Maybe I’m just grasping at straws. Because the defense was beyond flat today. This team had a lot of known flaws before today; an inability to tackle wasn’t one of them.

It’s because they are significantly worse on defense. The defense, compared to last year, is without Barmore, Bentley and Peppers which has caused a massive hole in the middle. They can be run over by just about anyone now. It’s killing them.

They could have drafted someone in the second. They could have traded up in the first. He decided to go for Polk, which was a bit of a reach and to me a bit strange to order before tackle when the team basically had no one there.

Yes, the FA pool was terrible, but literally this is his job; not ours. Eleumenor was available and signed a relatively reasonable deal to play for another terrible team. They could have overpaid to try to sway Jonah Williams. They went to the absolute scrap heap and made a guy who completely flamed out in Pittsburgh due to motivation issues be their only veteran deal at T.

Now none of these guys make the line good, but it would be better. I think the idea people are pushing back on is that this was the only possible path. That is a silly and fatalistic thought process.

Firing the greatest defensive mind in NFL history and replacing him with a guy who has never even called plays before might have something to do with that.

Wolf has been here since 2020 in a player personnel role. Unless you think all of his input was ignored by BB, his fingerprints are all over this garbage roster.

No one expected that.

I think expecting that Wolf would use the copious cap space to upgrade maybe one position group was reasonable. Did he do that?

I agree that is a factor but those personnel issues are devastating for just about anyone. I am not a Mayo guy especially after the story came out this past week of him being late for meetings cause he was constantly meeting with Kraft while Bill was the head coach. Not a good look at all. Hope Kraft can objectively look at Mayo after this season but have my doubts .

No one is saying this is the only path. We're asking what the other path is besides "draft someone" or "overpay guys"?

Yeah, this is really the most concerning thing, not only because of the decisions that were made but also because what it says about the owner, who is the one guy you can't change.

The idea of Kraft as one of the best owners in the NFL was built almost entirely on the notion that he was smart enough to let the football people make the football decisions. Oops.

Its pretty easy to let the football people make the football decisions when you have the best coach in NFL history and your team is on a run of unprecedented success.

I mean what more do you want? If you dont sign free agents and you dont draft guys then your only path is this shit sandwich. Eluemenor got a very reasonable deal. Given their cap situation, paying a veteran mediocre tackle $2-3M too much on a 2 year deal isnt a big deal and would be valuable to have some level of competent play (and is probably less than overpaid Rham to stay and would have avoided flushing $4M on Chuks).

Overpay guys would have been a better strategy specifically for the OL. If nothing else let we coulda added volume and hoped that a couple dudes emerged in camp. Play the odds, essentially.

Clearly adding scrubs and head cases was a bad approach.

I am trying to figure out if the Polk hate is just reflexive at this point, or what?

1st target = 50/50 ball. Maybe there? But D made a good play.
2nd (this may be out of order, going off of memory ) the ball into the cover 2 hole, where Maye threw a hospital ball. That ball cannot be to the inside like that.
3rd - no replay was shown, but the stalwart announcing crew said that his struggles continue, so it totally must have been on Polk. Looked like he was being held on the crosser.
4th slips on the wet turf making a cut. How many posts in the game thread talked about how bad the turf was, how many people weee slipping? But again, NFL Network, who obviously had no stake in this game, says that the field is in great shape… so it is our eyes that are lying ?

Why is overpaying guys, when you have a talent devoid roster and a ton of cap space, a problem?

You’re not going to build an entire roster through the draft. Most draft picks fail.

Last two weeks, Pats' run offense:

vs Hou: 26 att, 82 yds, 3.1 y/a - and Maye got 38 of them on scrambles (on 5 att) - so the RBs had 21 att for 44 yds = 2.1 y/a

at Jax: 15 att, 38 yds, 2.5 y/a - and Maye got 18 of them on scrambles (on 3 att) - so the RBs had 12 att for 20 yds = 1.7 y/a

So last two weeks, RB rushing: 33 att for 64 yds = 1.9 y/a

That's essentially as bad as it gets.

To me it's very simple, if you come into the league with the profile of a possession receiver with great hands whose main attribute is being strong at the catch point, you better make contested catches. He's not a YAC guy, he's not a deep threat, so he needs to make those plays.

I mean, they spent a combined 20-22M on Armon Watts, Okorafor, Takitaki, Hooper, Leverett, Osborn and Hawkins. A below average safety, rarely used WR and backup TE is all they got for that.

Probably could have spent some of that “overpaying” for a guy who can actually play at an average level

I would hardly say that he is the reason he lost the game … I think the inability to defend the middle of the field - whether run, pass, or punt return are bigger issues.

Eluemenor moved to guard.. They signed one of those guys... He just abruptly decided he didn't want to play football anymore.
This off-season sucked, they struck out on impact players and the mid-level guys they chose are all hurt or bad. I don't think that the strategy was wrong, but result have a been terrible. Only good thing it's they avoided giving out many bad seals so they get a mulligan come March

Oh, he's not the reason they lost the game, not anywhere close. He just needs to play better, and due to his profile as a player a lot of his opportunities will come into coverage or with tacklers bearing down on him. It is what it is.
