Perhaps these were the rumored red flags we heard about pre-draft?

Fastball has late sink. Loses some velocity after second time through order. Father sells meth. Has good leg drive.

If the allegations of dealing heroin prove true, I hope this piece of shit dies in prison painfully. Anybody that would sling that shit knowing that it is killing people all over the place, deserves a painful death.

Hopefully this keeps him away from Jay the younger for a long time. Kid needs to focus on perfecting his craft.

This seems unduly harsh.

I hope the father gets a fair/firm punishment and he's able to turn life around (in and out of prison)... and the son can bear the guilt/grief and focus on his strengths/opportunity.

Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends.

No, every criminal should be shot into the Sun the moment they are accused. It's not a perfect system, but it's the fairest system we have.

You quote that from memory?

What if he was a mild-mannered citizen until he heard that he had cancer and his life was falling apart / he realised he never came close to reaching his full potential so he decided to sell meth in order to provide for his family after he's gone and then he discovered that he was really good at it, took pride in his professionalism and gradually adopted a whole new personna?

Might make a good book or a movie. Maybe too depressing for a tv show though.

This is incredibly grim. I can't fathom what life as the son of a skag dealer was like for teenage Groome. At least they tried to move him to Florida at some point for high school, perhaps to keep him away from the ugliness. I feel really bad for the kid.
Hopefully the father kept Jason and the rest of his family out of his alleged business. Even if he did they're still going to go through Hell. The story is just sucks and no winners from this. Not even getting a drug dealer of the streets. Some other piece of slime may be ready to pounce on the situation.

Given the bonus Groome received and the money he is potentially going to make in the future, it's staggering that his dad didn't think "This is probably a good time to get out. I've been lucky to not have been caught, might as well stop testing my luck."

I mean, holy shit... what kind of dirtbag do you have to be to already have millions in the bank and a decent chance of many more millions on the horizon and STILL want to go out and deal this shit?

He may just be a shitty dad who has zero dollars coming his way just because his son is a millionaire. Why would you assume that just because his son has made a nice bonus that any of that money = millions in the dad's bank?

Yeah that was my thought as well. This could be viewed as evidence that he isn't on board with his dad's choices.

There's an older bald guy who looks like the mugshot of Groome's dad in the video of him reacting the day he was drafted, so I assume he wasn't estranged at that point. Not sure there's a lot of reason to believe that would have changed between then and now, but who knows? And maybe it's not actually his dad in that video.

Present at a big moment also doesn't mean everything's hunky dory. Like I say, that's one way it could be read. There are others. We may learn more and then again we may not.

Something tells me it's not as simple to quit the drug game as it is, say, your job.

The chance that a teenager took an active role in what amounts to organized crime, despite clearly having a lucrative baseball career looming, has to be approaching zero, right? He probably just played the hand he was dealt, and hopefully the dad kept his garbage away from the family.

I'm pretty sure it's Fred Noonan in the video.

It doesn't say so in the article but it's also entirely possible that his dad is an addict (it's pure speculation and based solely on the experience that people usually sell drugs to sustain a habit). That may explain the not so great decision making as well as it being possible for his dad to be with him on draft day but cut off from finances? At least I'd hope his agent would steer him away from giving an addict a bunch of money.

I'm sure his son Danny will be happy to know that Fred is actually alive, and not stranded on an island being pursued by coconut crabs. Maybe now he can give up caddying.
But seriously.....

It is possible that Dad's problems scared off some MLB teams who didn't want junior to get his arm broken by someone Dad owed money to.....

But it's also likely that this is ends up being no more of a thing w/r/t baseball than Dustin Pedroia's brother.
