If they were really doing everything they could to win last night, they would have IBB'd Judge five times.
So were the Rays not fully trying to beat the Yankees last weekend? Because they certainly didn't do this.

Familia was terrible and shouldn’t have been anywhere near last night’s game, but I am guessing that this was planned before last night. If Cora knew he would be gone, he just decided to roll the dice and see what happened. If it was about last night’s performance then I could think of some other people currently employed by the Red Sox that should suffer the same fate.

I'm not upset about this, but damn. An hour ago he was brought into a high leverage situation, and now he's DFA'd? Harsh.
The next high leverage situation involving the Red Sox will be in early April, 2023. All of what they are doing now is for 2023, no? Taking a look at some guys, calling up another, not overdoing it with the guys who we already know enough about. Etc. Barnes pitching the 9th is about next year. Familia pitching in extras is about how there isn't anything else to accomplish in this game. Not on the pitching side anyway.

I'm sure it would be nice for them to put on a good show and beat the Yankees, but I suspect they aren't thinking that way.

And I don't understand their reasoning, either
He's only been intentionally walked 16 times all season, including once last night, and a bunch of those came in extra innings with a guy on second already. Teams just don't do this much anymore, no matter the circumstances.

Also 3 of his 5 ABs last night came as the leadoff hitter of the inning, one of the other two he was IBBd (in the 10th).

Love you Chaim, but ya, big head scratcher here. Flotsam gonna flotsam. Still not even a German looksie to haunt his former organization either.
You really love Chaim Bloom? I get the idea of giving him the benefit of the doubt. Realizing that he's doing Henry's bidding. Giving him some time to show himself. Reasonable minds could assess Bloom this way.

But loving him given his performance thus far, including his schizo approach to trade deadline and the utterly moronic Renfro trade, among other debacles, seems really strange to me.

Maybe it was just a turn of phrase.

This DFA has a Steinbrenner "off with his head" feel to it.

And I admit it. I think Chaim Bloom sucks makor hairy ass and should be on the same boat out of town as Familia. I just don't like how this one went down (high leverage and then booted).

Not really the thread, but just to respond. I'm a B+ with Bloom as long as he puts up a wild card contending team next year The puzzling decisions he makes (such as Familia and sticking with below replacement talent) are more short term annoyances than anything preventing the team from making their move when the window comes. Even if everything broke right this season, they aren't in the same league as the teams above them.

There is not one bad contract on the books for next season - something that hasn't happened in maybe 15-20 years. They are set up to trade for talent or sign it. Something he hasn't had much wiggle room to do since taking over.

It's really not that complicated. They were trying to win, then Whitlock blew the save in the 8th. They went with Barnes next, and got a scoreless inning from him, but if they didn't score in the 9th, they were going to have to use someone not good. There were no good or even decent options left. Anyone they bring in at that point looks like a questionable move.

As for the DFA, someone was going to be dumped when Yu Chang was activated today, so they gave Familia one last chance to see if he could do anything positive (and possibly because they thought his splitter might work against the batters they had coming up.) He was brought in to face the bottom of the order, but blew his last-gasp chance to save his job by sucking again, and so he is the one gone.

The other choices were Ort, Kelly, Danish, Strahm, or Bazardo. Strahm is a lefty, Ort has a 6.33 ERA, Kelly has thrown 6 innings in his major league career, Bazardo has thrown 8 innings in the majors (and has a 7.20 ERA). I would guess that Cora would prefer not to use one of the rookies (old though they may be, they are still inexperienced at this level) in a high-leverage spot against the Yankees-- the rage that occurs from the home fans when we lose to NYY might not be something he thinks they are ready to handle. (Then again, Whitlock probably won't be available tonight, so one of them might have to learn how to handle that anyway, we'll see.)

That leaves Tyler Danish, who at least has 46 major league innings in his career. He was probably coming in next if we tied it up.

So everyone is in a rage because they went with Familia over the great Tyler Danish.

In the game thread, everyone wanted Familia DFA'd as soon as possible. So they DFA'd him as soon as possible, and now people are like "What?!? They DFA'd him? That doesn't make any sense!"

Where’s Tony LaRussa when you need him?
FWIW, I was begging Whitlock through the radio to IBB Judge in that at bat.

It was a questionable signing, to begin with, a few weeks ago. I don't recall anyone getting terribly excited about it.

Now it's a "See? I told you so!" situation.
