When he saw he wasn't in the Woosox lineup he went to the manager and said, "Is There Something I Should Know?"

The question now is who goes to make room for him? Is it a DFA or a Hellenic flu IL stint for Santana or Gonzalez? Brice DFA?

Gonzalez has a bad right hammy, that will be the move.

Could be more shuffling as we lose a backup SS - Arauz for Chavis? Will they finally dump Andriese / IL him? Find out tomorrow.

Where does he bat in the lineup? I say go leadoff, but that may be a bit aggressive. But a top half of Duran/Verdugo/X/JD/Devers/Renfroe is pretty tantalizing.
I'd start him at 9 for a few weeks with the intentions of giving him the lead off spot once he gets his feet under him.

edit: I wonder if the Olympics impacted this at all.

It would have been a poor move for him to not go to the Olympics because he might get called up, and then not get called up…

Ian Cundall gives an updated scouting report on Duran. Extreme raw power especially to pull side, can hit for power to all fields, hitting lefties better than righties this year but still hitting for power vs RHP. Plus plus speed, average arm. Will strike out, but has improved his approach this year. Will take what the pitcher gives him. http://news.soxprospects.com/2021/07/scouting-report-update-jarren-duran.html

Not here
They won't demote Chavis before the trade deadline because they're shopping him.
I don't think you shop players that are almost entirely fungible.

I'd start him at 9 for a few weeks with the intentions of giving him the lead off spot once he gets his feet under him.
This is my hope as well. A guy who can get on base in front of our 2-5 makes this lineup just all that much more devastating.

And I love fast guys. Love them.

He'll be fine, regardless of it being Yankee Stadium, he'll find it's just an ordinary world when it comes to sports.
Yeah, and the Sox are Notorious for baptizing their young studs at Stade Faciste.

To answer a few questions posed above:
1. Cora said a few days ago Gonzalez needs to go on the IL
2. Andriese is already on the IL, that's how Brice is on the team
3. I expect Duran will begin his MLB career batting 9th

In the last month Kike Hernandez has put up a .266/.394/.570 line. Leadoff is not an issue right now and there's just about no chance Duran could improve on that. Alex Verdugo is the bigger problem, having gone .253/.340/.341 and looking like he's been playing hurt.

Get in! Extra exciting to bring up one of our top prospects right after getting excited about this year's draft. It's the circle of (player development) life.

OK Jarren, you've got your shot. Why don't you use it, try not to bruise it.

I'm thinking the same. Put him in the "second" lead off spot. Ease him in and at the same time let him see if he can solidify the back end of the batting order. Also remember this, whenever Duran is patrolling in the OF, either Kike or Arroyo will be patrolling the bench. Kike has limited experience at 1B with The Dodgers, I wonder if they might see if he can expand on that experience and make Marwin expendable as the only value he has to the team ATM is his ability to play good defense at nearly every position on the diamond.

Regarding the Olympics, he was left off the team in consideration of the Sox potential need for him to be on the big league roster.

I see Jarren doing very well in his opening series with the short porch in right at Yankee Stadium. It will be a memorable start for him.

Chavis will probably go down with Kiki and Arroyo sharing time at 2nd.

If Duran performs well, why not have Hernandez take over at second? Likewise, have Hernandez lead off for the next few weeks and see how Duran acclimates to the pros.

To this end I wonder if there's a chance Verdugo goes on the IL .. sure seems like he could use it (though maybe 4 days off helped) ...

And see if Arroyo could handle first ... (as some other folks have suggested in a recent thread) ....

Holy shit on that line from Kike. I knew he’d been on a streak but I didn’t think he was hitting that well. Good on Cora for his patience.

So what do we think: is he up for good and handed a starting job? Up for a little while at least with some starts and a chance to play his way into the lineup? More on the bench and/or likely to go back down after a cup of coffee? It seems like we are mostly believing choice #1, though in my case at least I don't know if that's just the enthusiasm talking.

I think it's something between 1 and 2. He's here to start but if he looks overwhelmed may be sent back down rather than ride the bench. There's no reason to bring him up before September if you're not gonna play him. He need reps.

No, not unless A) his play forces his way into into a starting job or B) someone gets traded. I don't foresee either of those happening ATM. I think for the time being you see a three man rotation between Duran, Kike and Arroyo with the latter two getting the majority of time and Duran perhaps picking up extra ABs (if warranted) while giving Verdugo and Renfroe occasional days off.

I disagree. They cannot continue to have Chavis, Marwin and Santana getting meaningful ABs (I was at the game v. the A's where they batted consecutively and have not yet recovered). I think he's up for good unless he is catastrophically bad (i.e., even worse than Santana).

Two concerns:

(1) My impression is that Kike has been a plus-CFer, so I'm a little concerned what will happen to the pitching performance if Verdugo+Duran are significantly worse defensively than Kike+Verdugo.

(2) It sounds like the Sox assured Kike they would not be moving him around all season, so I'm curious to see how happy he'll be if they start bouncing him between 2b and the OF more frequently. Hopefully he considers it a non-issue as long as he's starting.

I’d sit him the first game and tell Kike, Verdugo, and Renfroe that you plan to give him a spot and them a day off each of the next three games.

Barring this being a call-up to cover a Verdugo IL trip, I think he's Arroyo's platoon partner for now. Starts in CF against righties, with Kike playing 2B. Sits against lefties.

He has a reverse split in his pro career so far, but I still think easing him in as the strong side of a platoon and seeing how he adjusts would be the smartest way to begin his career. If he responds well and/or other guys (like Arroyo) falter, give him more playing time. If he doesn't, Worcester's not that far away.

Gotta think if he's up, he's going to play, but wonder if he gets in first game? Maybe a day to soak it up.

Either way, LFG.
