That cap number is really wrong. The Patriots are virtually out of cap space with this move. Miguel has been harping on this for days -- that the beat writers presumption of $40 million is way off.

Would be great if we could get a 2020 pick when we otherwise would have gotten a 2021 one.

Be nice to get a 2nd for 2020 since the Pats don't have one. Of course, the Commish then could just take it away for the illegal taping.

Calais Campbell was just traded for a 5th round pick and was set to make $15M. Different positions, but pass rush tends to be valued more than interior OL.

I doubt a guard on a 1 year, $14M deal would net them a 2nd round pick. But yeah, that would be nice.

I would assume that part of the deal would be that the team getting Thuney isn't getting 1/14 but rather a longer term deal as part of a S&T, which may be worth the second rounder for a player of Thuney's caliber and age.

Of course, NE could just be doing this to maybe gain a few spots in the third round vs. a compensatory pick (earlier) and keep him out of the AFCE. We will have to see.

It would be a sign-and-trade scenario, not just flipping the franchised player.

I wonder if Year 1 AD (After Dante) means that they will spend more short-term to ensure OL continuity, at the expense of other areas

Campbell is going to be 34 in September. Thuney will be 28. If you sign Thuney to a 5 year deal, he's going to play for you for 5 years. Who knows how long Campbell has left. Huge difference IMO.

Isn't that what the non-exclusive franchise tag is about? I haven't seen yet whether Thuney got the exclusive or non-exclusive tag.
Non-exclusive means a team can sign Thuney to an offer sheet and if the Pats elect not to match, they get two firsts. I don't see anyone giving up two firsts for him.

If they're trading Thuney, they're trading him on the one-year franchise deal and letting the receiving team work out a long-term deal.

I just meant using the non-exclusive tag as a prelude to a trade (though no doubt BB would love someone to hand over two #1's). I see your point now.

Yeah, for sure and I didn't mean to overlook the age difference. But both guys were/are on 1 year deals. Baltimore resigned Campbell to a 2 yr extension after the deal, similar to what a team would be looking at with Thuney, but for more years and dollars.

Even considering the age difference, I don't think a 28 year old OG on a 1 year deal (who may want a top of the market extension) nets you a 2nd round pick. If I'm a team in need of an OG, I'd rather take the best one available in the 2nd and use the savings to address other needs. If Bill can find a team willing to do that, like I said, that would be great.

Well, Bill can say "Look, we're going to have a kick-ass OL next season if you'd like to be under center for us. You can read the numbers just as well as I can. If you want to come back for $X million, the choice is yours - but you have until tomorrow to decide".

So seeing some of these OL deals ($10mn/yr for Flowers, $11mn for Glasnow) makes Thuney on the tag number seem like a decent value.
