SSS and all, but a bunch of teams may end up regretting not bidding higher on Abreu. Its not just the numbers but the approach. I've caught a bunch of his ABs over the first 10 days of the season and he just looks like a professional hitter with a real plan at the plate and the ability to simply crush mistakes. He swings a lot, including on pitches out of the zone, but he hits everything. It will be interesting to see how pitchers adjust to him once the book gets around but so far he seems completely unphased by the transition to major league baseball.

Sad to see him losing his buddy Avisail Garcia for the year, they had apparently formed a solid friendship and will be interesting to see how he handles that mental loss of Garcia.  But yes they had formed a very solid power/plate approach combo.

Five teams bid more than $60 million for White Sox rookie first baseman Jose Abreu, as I reported Saturday on the FOX Sports 1 pregame show. The other four, according to major league sources, were the Astros, Brewers, Rockies and Red Sox.

The Red Sox, who came within $5 million of the White Sox'€™s winning $68 million bid, would have tried to re-sign first baseman Mike Napoli even if they had landed Abreu. And if they had succeeded in getting both, Abreu -- ahem -- might have started the season at Triple-A.

That's fascinating. Would that have implied no extension for Ortiz? A shorter deal for Napoli?

I've been pretty impressed with Abreu so far. He has great hands and ridiculous plate coverage. The other week against Colorado he took a down and in breaking ball off the plate out of the park and then in the same game he took an up and away 90+ mph fastball off the plate out of the park for a home run. He's also been more athletic than advertised (notwithstanding the error from the other day). But he's swinging at everything right now, he's going to have to learn to be a bit more selective if he wants to maintain his success against major league pitching.

Abreu just hit home run #10 off of David Price. This guy is looking like an absolute monster.

I read that and was upset at first, but the article mentions that 4 or 5 other teams were also interested, so they're not the only ones kicking themselves and may not have even had the second-highest bid. Sure, you can say "Well why didn't they bid him higher if they really liked him!" but you can say that about lots of players.

Maybe the White Sox would have gone higher than they did if they had topped their offer, too. Plus, it also mentions that having two other Cubans on the White Sox means he may have preferred them anyway if the money was close. Hindsight is 20/20.
