EDIT: Rosenthal tweet already posted.

Some part of my brain really hoped this was false but as more reports come in, that's all but gone away at this point.

Fernandez brought a LOT to the sport and he seemed like a genuinely fun person to be around. Terrible day.

As an FYI if you post tweets like that people on mobile can't see them.
For those that can't Rosenthal and others are confirming the story and the Marlins will release a statement shortly.

Yup. My first thought was his batflip after hitting that home run.

EDIT: I guess it was just staring at his first home run, not a batflip, but still.

Miami Marlins ace Jose Fernandez was killed in a boating accident in Florida early Sunday morning.

Fernandez was 24 years old.

According to CBS in Miami, police received a call of a possible boating accident at 3 am ET. Authorities found a 30-foot boat overturned that had crashed into the rocks off Miami Beach. Three people were found dead and authorities were looking for survivors.

Fernandez's start had been pushed back from Sunday to Monday to make room for Adam Conley returning from the disabled list.

Absolutely tragic. I cribbed this list from an article after Kile's death.

Josh Hancock (April 29, 2007) Cardinals. Drunk driving accident.

Darryl Kile (June 22, 2002) St. Louis Cardinals. Died in his hotel room of coronary disease.

Mike Darr (Feb. 15, 2002): Darr, 25, a backup outfielder for the Padres, was killed in an auto accident in Phoenix

Steve Olin and Tim Crews (March 22, 1993): The Indians pitchers, Olin, 27, and Crews, 31, were killed when their fishing boat slammed into a pier. Bob Ojeda, also on the boat, was badly injured.

Thurman Munson (Aug. 2, 1979): Munson, 32, the Yankees star catcher and AL MVP in '76, captain, died when the plane he was piloting crashed in Ohio.

Lyman Bostock (Sept. 23, 1978): Bostock, 27, an Angels outfielder, was in the back seat of his uncle's car in Gary when he was shot.

Willard Hershberger (Aug. 3, 1940): Hershberger, 30, a Reds catcher, committed suicide a few days after a pitch he called was hit for a game-winning grand slam.

Ray Chapman (Aug. 18, 1920): Chapman, 29, a shortstop for the Indians, died the day after being beaned by the Yankees' Carl Mays.
Edit : added Hancock

I know one or two people who work for the team since I lived down there for a few years. I hope to god it's not true. It was an honor to watch the man work a real transcendent pitcher.

Associated Press has it now as well. What a waste of talent... hope it was not a result of a poor decision.
Being out on a boat at 3am doesn't exactly suggest sound decision making. Maybe they were just getting an early start on fishing. Was he supposed to be pitching today?

Very sad.

Absolutely heartbreaking. My son and I saw his debut at Citifield back in April 2013. My son is a part-time Marlins fan, he is devastated.

The news thus far says that they received reports of an overturned boat at 3am. Since thus far there have been no reported survivors, it is possible someone noticed the wreckage at 3am and it happened earlier. Tragic regardless of it it was a bad decision or not.

The kind of star that highlighted what baseball can be: relentlessly fun, youthfully exuberant, mind-bendingly talented. Awful.

Horrible news. Shouldn't be on the water late, just a really bad choice. Regardless of the how, a saddening loss of a very talented and good guy.

Dang this is so sad and seems so surreal. Prayers for his family. As a southern Californian this just reminds me of Angels pitcher nick adenhart who was killed in a drunk driving accident couple of years back.
