Judge is also creeping up on the batting title. I'd say it's still unlikely but he has a shot at the Triple Crown.

This guy is out of his mind… and I’m absolutely here for it. Just keep driving that price up!

Great chance to pass both Ruth and Maris in well under 154 games. Very impressive, particular in this year of depressed hitting stats. On pace for 65. And then, just like Barry Bonds, he can sign with the Giants in free agency ;)

Totally grooved and the reaction was over the top.
I think his price was probably set 2 months ago and all he needed to do was stay healthy and consistent. The MVP and breaking the record probably doesn't change much IMO. It's not like he went from $350m to $450m. I think.

I think that it absolutely has to. At the very least he's going to (should, I suppose) use it as fuel to completely rake the Yanks over the coals until the very last minute. It's going to be a serious issue. It will be very difficult to know how or where to spend free agent capital. If that doesn't go their way they'll have a bit $40 million hole to spend on the best men left standing at the latter parts of free agency. He knows this, his agent knows this and the Yankees know this.

They don't have many holes to fill, at least how it looks now. They have kept all their position player prospects so they should have a lot of cheap talent to fill in around their big salary guys over the next year or two.

I quickly count about $70M coming off the 2022 payroll, none of whom need to be replaced except Judge. Chapman, Britton, Taillon, Benintendi, Green, NY already has capable replacements for all of them in house. They need to deal with Judge, they need to figure out the Rizzo situation (he can take $16M for 2023 or opt out, I have to think his back situation will mean he doesn't opt out, but maybe NY will add on another $16M for 2024), and I'd like to see them go after Rodon but that bidding might get crazy.

Come on, that makes us no better than Brady haters. Enjoy history in our lifetimes.

I know he's huge, but Richie Sexton was bigger. I'm going to be really, really bummed if this smiling, "say all the right things" monster turns into A-Roid. He's never had any suspicion of steroids, correct? Because, after the Sosa/Bonds/McGuire shit, that could be a death knell for the sport.

Some Red Sox pitcher could soon become the answer to a trivia question. Rich Hill, maybe…although it could be a big payday and a lifetime of autograph signings for a guy like Kaleb Ort or Frank German.

I will consider him the AL home run king :) I can’t say I think too often about it but personally find it difficult to put asterisks or whatever next to any record; every era had its unique aspects to it, I guess. It’s sort of a shame that this isn’t getting early the attention that it would have 25 years ago, but I guess that’s a statement about baseballs relative popularity more than anything else.

Oh, he’s on steroids. They’re all on steroids.

Wouldn't surprise anyone at all, but I do think Judge is what would happen if more of the top modern athletes with his frame focused on baseball from a young age (the ones currently going into the NBA and NFL).

That kind of athleticism and size combo was rare at best when the pre-steroid HR records were set. Sure, hitting a baseball is such a specific, difficult skill that most of those guys would still fail at it, but probably a couple would harness their gifts and beat the shit out of the ball at a rate like this one. I'm sure many have speculated on whether 6' 6" Jordan could have been great with a singular focus on baseball.

I'm not sure the best of these guys would need steroids to hit 110 MPH barrels the way normal mortals do.

It just presupposes such a genetic advantage over every other tippy top 1% out there, many of whom are undoubtedly juicing. Possible I guess.

The crazy thing is that it seems like it's always when the Yankees need the runs. It's not like it's 15-2.

Can we change “to” to “through?”

62 looks like a formality with who’s coming this weekend.

Just really hoping he hits two tonight

The sentiment has been expressed by multiple Sox fans here, but I'm rooting for the guy. A likeable Yankee, aside from the boom box incident.

Is my math wrong or did Maris hit his 61 homers 61 years ago? Spooky.
Yeah, heard this today on Mad Dog Radio. Caller cited that, along with them both primarily being right fielders, and that Maris wore 9 and Judge 99

Why are teams pitching to him if the rest of the lineup sucks so bad?
It's like in 1941 when Ted Williams came out for his first at bat on the last day of the season (a doubleheader) batting .3995, the Athletics catcher said to him "Mr Mack said we're pitching to you". Williams said "fine", of course. It's like a badge of honor or something. Of course, next week Toronto will walk Judge every time if it makes sense in winning for them.

Fuck Judge.
I was called in front of the Fuck Judge once. I was an expert witness, like Marisa Tomei.

My nephew's in his late teens, always an incidental baseball fan (went to Fenway, rocked Sox gear, but liked Jeter a little too much). I think he found the game boring. He's gotten into the Sox much more since he got old enough to head to games with his buddies (and probably because it's a way to bond with his aunts and uncles).

He's dialed into Judge's HR race. Says he wants to watch every AB, even though he's a Yankee. It's fun to witness.

Have opinions changed at all?

If he hits 62 (in 154), in your heart of hearts, will you consider him the true (clean) single season home run king?
Yes, and I hope he gets to 74. Won’t happen, but I’d like it, even if he wears pinstripes.

I’m not familiar with the boom box incident, but I’d put him with Mariano Rivera where you have to go out of your way to dislike the guy, imho.

With the Sox season as it is, I’m checking in multiple times a day on three guys. Judge, Pujols, and Vogelbach. The latter only because he’s close friends with a buddy of mine. After that, I check to see how some of the youngsters are doing around the league and, obviously, what Ohtani did.

After their game 2 win in the 2018 ALDS... Sox of course went on to win both in NY en route to the title
