Here
Thanks for everything Jules. Enjoy retirement and raising your daughter. One hell of a career for a 7th round QB.

Amazing that we have three threads with almost the same exact title within a minute of each other! Thanks to Julian for everything he has given to the Patriots. One of my all time favorite players.

Not a shock. Didn’t think the Patriots would carry him on the roster this year anyways as they are trending to get younger.

Schefter says this is a technicality as part of likely retirement. I wonder why they didn't have JE announce it first.

Seems somehow fitting that Pedroia and Edelman are/may be retiring in the same year. Both were undersized players that needed to overcome a lot to succeed but ended up being absolutely critical players and leaders to their respective teams whose careers were ultimately cut short due to injuries.

Pats didn't make an announcement--I don't know if they needed to execute the transaction when they did for either cap or other purposes.

Godspeed, Jules. That catch in SB LI will forever belong on the Mount Olympus of New England sports plays.
He has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to high profile plays.

TD pass to Amendola v BAL in the ‘14 AFCD, the aforementioned Edelcatch, the catch over the middle on third and 14 in the 4th quarter v SEA in SB49 where Chancellor almost decapitated him (and definitely concussed him), the winning TD catch in SB49.

Kind of reminds me of Pedroia's end. Sad. Love Jules, will remember him as one of the GOATS of Patriots history.

Let’s see how the TB12 method deals with a bone on bone knee condition.
I would bet on TB12 at least getting him to try it out. For his sake, hopefully Jules does retire. He doesn’t need the ring nor the additional post-playing risk.

Given its most likely just part of retirement (per above and ESPN) might need to update the thread title.

Patriots star receiver Julian Edelman, who helped New England win three championships and was the MVP of Super Bowl LIII, is expected to retire, a source told ESPN.
https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/31244437/source-julian-edelman-expected-retire-ending-12-year-career-new-england-patriots

And its official

“Nothing in my career has ever come easy,” Edelman said. “This isn’t going to be easy either. I’ve always said I’m going until the wheels come off and they finally have fallen off. Due to an injury last year I will be making my official announcement of my retirement from football. It was a hard decision but the right decision for me and my family. And I am honored and so proud to be retiring as a Patriot.”

I don't get the sense that Edelman will want to unretire for TB or anyone else. Gronk's "retirement" was seemingly just because he was kind of burnt out - he had some injuries to be sure but nothing career-threatening, and had just come off a solid SB performance. Edelman by contrast hasn't been able to stay on the field for a few years now and it sounds like doctors have made clear to him he'd struggle to play much this year either.

Edelman had a minor knee procedure a few weeks into last season and was never able to get back on the field. He'll be 35 and just failed a physical. The chances of him coming back from this are basically zero. He's not unretiring to go to Tampa.

That and the fact that he very clearly points out he was honored to retire a patriot

BTW did anybody hear him mention Brady? I would have expected at least a small mention

It wasn't great he got a concussion, but I loved that play against Seattle. All we heard all week was that the Seattle had this legendary secondary that was going to eat the Patriots up, and on that play Seattle's biggest hitter was given a clean shot at Edelman on a critical play, and Edelman still hung on to the ball and actually gained a few more yards after the hit.

This play was the quintessential Jules, tough as nails.

He was a Great Patriot and will be missed.

The cradle of the game.
How many drive-saving, game-saving 3rd and long conversions did he have with 2, 3 guys draped over him? Seems like a thousand. Wes, who?

FWIW I know the doctor who was in charge of administering the concussion tests that game. He’s adamant Jules was fine and didn’t have any concussion symptoms. Hard to square that with the way it looked and the way he was running after, but take that for what you will

Apparently the Pats cutting him allowed JE to collect an extra $2M. Nice.

Hey guys. Long time lurker here - just not big on posting on boards but huge fan of all yous and I gotta post for Jules. Man I was hoping we'd get a season or two more. I think hes my all-time favorite partiot and his game against the colts in 2011 might be my all time favorite performance by any player.

In my book hes a hands down hall of famer. A lot of people outside of New England just dont realize the impact he was having on games before he was even getting the offensive snaps/targets he deserved.

I mind of assume he stays retired, but part of me wonders if terminating his contract was a way for him to be able to pursue playing late in the season (after the trade deadline) if he wanted to give it a try. This way theres no late release, no hassle. Hes free to give it a try or not.

I personally dont think so, just a little weird (as noted above) to terminate the contract instead of having him retire.

He gets paid more money by having his contract terminated due to injury. So not weird at all.

Amazing that you listed four insanely important high-profile playoff moments for him...and none were in the Super Bowl where he was named the MVP.

Godspeed Edelman.

I remember getting rudely mocked on a different forum when Welker left and I suggested Edelman could give the Pats at least 80% of Welker. I guess I was way off after all, but in the wrong direction from the people laughing at me.

118 catches in the playoffs. Best for a guy not named Rice. He should stick up near the top for a good long period of time.

Spent many years in Pitt. Out of the blue 2 separate Pitt friends text me the following. Not sure how or why Hines got pulled into this.
I noted Jules better playoff numbers but Ill take any other advice how to respond.

Edelman’s post season separates him from his peers, and he was part of the greatest dynasty in the history of the league. That’s how it goes for people in that select club.
