Iggy now has a .425 Average for his first 40 ABs for the Mets, a record only exceeded by Keith Hernandez.
Just made a nifty play that Valdez could only dream about.

Current #1 prospect in MLB (?) James Wood, a massive 6'7" power/speed threat OF on the Nats making his debut right now against the Mets. Standing ovation by the home crowd, followed by a 106 mph single to the opposite field.

Understandable why the Padres went all in trying to get a dying owner a ring, but Abrams/Gore/Wood continues to look like a great return for Soto.

Lotta large humans playing baseball these days. Wonder if basketball money wasn’t so much better we’d see a lot more small forwards playing outfield.

I think there’s just a lot of large humans playing all professional sports nowadays. In this week’s NHL draft, there were more players 6’7” and taller drafted than 5’11” and shorter. That’s wild given how many all time great NHL players have been on the shorter side.

Lots of folks slamming Luis Robert today (well, it's "lots" if you follow the same folks I do):

He's not throwing out Steven Kwan there but it's just the optics of having nothing to lose by trying and maybe a 1% chance the runner trips and falls.

The announcer, at the moment it's hit, "In the air - is it deep enough? Yes." - this is before Robert catches it, the Guardians' announcer already knew it was over.

Yeah, it would LOOK better to make a half hearted throw, and if he knew exactly where the ball was going to land maybe he would've played deeper and tried to charge it. However, he was playing shallow because any medium-depth fly ball means the game's over - so he was going back on the ball, not coming in on it.

Edit: Here's a walkoff sac fly from this year where the OF "threw it" but it was over and he knew it. Did this throw help the team? Even if the runner had tripped?

And here's the other 5 walkoff sac flies from this year. Every time, the OF made a throw. Sometimes full effort, sometimes not. Sometimes they had a chance with a perfect throw, sometimes not. I think in the Robert example, we're looking for eyewash.

It's not as though he caught it on the run or backpedaling. He was camped under it long enough that he could have rounded behind it and moved in on it for maximum momentum on a throw. It's not as egregious as something like Duran giving up on that ball a couple years ago, but there's certainly room here for some criticism of his effort. It's not the end of the world though, and certainly not something that Robert should be excoriated for. Especially considering the fortunes of that team overall.

6 miles from Angel Stadium
San Diego ahead 7-2 in the ninth against the Diamondbacks. A grand slam and a 2-run pinch hit homer off the closer. AZ still up.

Update: Profar ties it with a homer 8-8. Wild stuff.

Moving the Line
First game since 2012 to feature a team blowing a 5+ run lead in the 9th, and then coming from behind to then walk it off. In true Jon Bois style, naturally the losing team there was the Mariners.

Orsillo absolutely crushed that call. Goodness.

Mets losing every which way over the last 3 games.
Blew a 5-0 lead to theNats, lose 7-5
Get 1 hit vs Nats, lose 1-0.
Give up 7 HRs to Buccos, lose 14-2.
They also blew another 5 run lead in the last week.

Twins now 8-0 vs WhiteSox. Sox need a tomato can in the East. Sell, BlueJays, sell.

Angel Martinez with his first MLB home run in the 1st inning tonight.

He's been Cleveland's best hitter since he was recalled last week and is playing all over the field. He's unusually calm for a kid, taking pitches just off the plate and drawing walks. The one thing he hasn't done is play shortstop, but with all the position players Cleveland now has graduating to the big leagues, it wouldn't shock me to see them trade a regular in the lineup like Brayan Rocchio or Will Brennan to improve an area of need this month. Gabriel Arias has reached the point where he needs to be traded or he's going to be placed on waivers in the near future. Conversely, they may decide to strike the iron while it's hot and trade a recent call-up like "Big Christmas" Jhonkensy Noel. They've entered a territory where it makes more sense to make a big impact trade than to add more role players around the edges.

It's time for Kenta Maeda to ride off into the rising sun. His ERA over his last 5 starts is 10.13… and his ERA for the season was 5.89 before that.

Garrett Crochet pulled after two innings tonight. I'm not seeing ny reports of injury, so maybe just extra rest?

HBP in the ninth in the Yankees-Orioles game looked purposeful to me. Sets up potentially a wild weekend

Orioles are probably afraid of pitching inside because it might lead to ejections or more drama. Soto and Judge are just mashing these middle-middle changeups.

I wouldn't doubt that. Boone loves to instigate things with his warriors pulling bully-ball crap. They hit Henderson square in the middle of the back a month ago with another pitch that "got away." When the kid was still face down in the dirt last night, Cortes apparently was running his mouth about it, which is what ticked off Hyde. After the game, Cole called it "good hard baseball."

Giants won on a walk off Little League HR, so the Sox and Twins are now tied in the loss column.

Sosa tries to get the runner at home on a 2nd and 3rd with one out situation on a Cruz chopper up the middle, but failed. Nick Gonzalez with the walk off single on the next pitch off of Alvarado.

Baseball is fucking awesome.

This doesn't make sense. The Angels blew a 10 (11 actually) game lead that year, but they were only up by that much once. They were up by more than 10 games from July 23 until August 16, but were never up by more than that in any other window.

The point still stands that the Mariners broke the record, but I don't think the Angels did it twice in one season.

Unless I am an idiot, which is always possible.

I'd suggest the Mariners make some more trades, but they're likely to work out about as well as the acquisitions of Polanco and Garver have so far

He corrected himself. Two blown 10-game leads in one season would be pretty remarkable though.

Mariners still have the lowest BA in all of baseball. Third worst in OBP and slugging. Was only a matter of time.

I think I figured out what he meant - they blew a ten-game lead to the Mariners, who won the AL West, but they also blew a ten-game lead to the Yankees for the WC spot that year.
