Not finding a lot of easily available scouting reports on McAvoy -- Matt Huegel at SP suggests it's an underslot pick to re-balance the money
On the stream, they said his stuff is okay but he goes after hitters.

deep inside Guido territory
McAvoy pitched for Yarmouth last summer in the CCBL striking out 28 and only walking 7 in 31 IP.

Edit: Talked to a friend who was his trainer at Bryant.  He says he sits at 92-93 with movement and has a high ceiling.  He told me the Houston coach said McAvoy was the best pitcher they'd faced all year(faced him in the Regionals).

Maybe next round, I'm rooting for James Norwood, a starting pitcher out of St. Louis University who played summer ball with my son a couple years back.  Throws gas (touches 98, gets to 95 pretty regularly) with good control.  As a pudgy high schooler his stamina wasn't up to par, but he's stretched out a little (to 6'2, 205) by now.  Still profiles as a likely reliever.  Was projected as a 4th rounder.

Mason McCullough just drafted. One of the best fastballs in the draft. MLB.com writeup compares him to Kenny Powers.

That would have been fun to watch.

Not long after Josh Ockimey had put on an impressive show in a postgame batting session, routinely slamming balls over Archbishop Carroll's fence, Kevin Schneider's cellphone rang.

A major-league scout who had been on hand was calling Neumann-Goretti's first-year coach to ask about the slugger's next appearance. Did the scout rave about what he witnessed?

"Not really," Schneider said with a laugh. "He said, 'I saw him hit balls out at Fenway Park. I experienced it firsthand before. I know what he can do.' "

Ockimey, a lefthanded slugger and four-year starter for the Saints, participated in a private workout for the Red Sox last fall. In what he described as a surreal experience, he sent two balls over the right-field fence.

"To do that at a historic ballpark was pretty special," the senior first baseman said. "I think one of the shots measured about 420 to 430 feet."

Ockimey has committed to the University of Indiana, but there is talk of his being selected in the first 10 rounds, possibly as early as the third, of the draft.

He's one of the top power hitters in the entire country," said Schneider, a full-time baseball instructor. "The strength and quickness in his hands, it's second to none. He's going to have even more power when he incorporates his lower half."

How many SS can the Sox draft?
This is an odd question since they haven't drafted any so far this year. Chavis is listed as SS but no scouting report says he'll play there as a pro.

I'm late to the party, the but Astros won the draft for just by getting Brock Dykxhoorn. That is the best name I've seen, like, ever.

"Lenny Dykstra's son is a hustler, just like his dad."

That couldn't possibly have been an accident, right?

There are some fantastic names who will potentially drafted this weekend. In addition to Joey Pankake and Brock Dykxhoorn, there's also Blaze Tart, Chase Corn, Cre Frinfrock, Mat Batts, Maverick Buffo, Tye Rambo, Cisco Factor, Handsome Monica, Rock Rucker, and Nigel Nootbar.

And of course, Fenway Parks.

Someday when I am a billionaire, I will buy the Yankees and our entire draft will be the people with the funniest names. Also, probably a few fictional characters and dead people with the first few picks.

What does it mean to say that he "can drive it to all fields at 5 O'clock?"

Does it simply mean that his power plays in games (i.e. that's when college games typically start), and he's not just a BP hero?  Or is it something else?

More importantly: thank you to mbd and others for finding/having and sharing these scouting reports.

Your guess is as good as any. I've never seen or heard that reference before in relation to hitting, which is why I didn't bother bolding it.

Matt Batts (Matthew Daniel Batts Jr.) was a catcher for the Red Sox from 1947 through part of the 1951 season, when he was traded with a PTBNL and $100,00 to the St. Louis Browns for catcher Les Moss. Batts was freshman at Baylor Univesity when he was  signed by Boston as a free agent prior to the 1942 season. He dropped out and joined the Army Air Corps.

The drafted Kevin Steen looks boring compared to the Canadian kick ass Kevin Steen who would have to be fun in a baseball clubhouse:

Yeah, that guy wreaked havoc on my Googling of the ballplayer. On first try, about 98% of the results were for the rasslin' roid freak.

I was at that that show where he kissed the fan, it was Boiling Point 2012, in Providence. Not to turn this into a lovefest of Steen, but he is one of the top 5-10 guys in the world right now. He just did his ROH farewell a few weeks ago and is rumored to be heading to WWE.

While the wrestling chatter was fun while it lasted, those animated GIFs really slow down page loading. Since this thread is going to be refreshed constantly by thousands of readers for the next 8 hours, I'd like to request that no other animated GIFs (wrestling, baseball or otherwise, as much as I'd love to see hot Asian girls getting naked & frisky) be embedded directly into posts. Just link to them instead. Thanks in advance.

I just wanted to take a moment to thank everyone for the great info being posted in this and the individual draftee threads. I'm out of town for a wedding and it's great being about to relay more than just names and positions to the groom, who is the only other Sox fan here.
