All of this reads as the Angels doing stupid things in frustration as their 27-17 start gets wasted. Trout was not beaned last night, it was a brushback because he's murdering them at the plate, but apparently Trout was really upset after the game.
Yeah, and Trout was the tying run (I believe) in that game. I do get the hitter being upset but the manager should not fan the flames the next day. Or do it so obviously.

Vinnie Pasquantino will be making his MLB debut for the Royals tonight. He had among the better slash lines in MiLB last year, with a .949 OPS in A+, before getting promoted to AA and putting up a .310/.405/.560/.965 in AA over 55 games, with 11 homers and walking more than he struck out.

This year, as a 24 year old in AAA, he is at a .948 OPS, with 16 doubles and 18 home runs, and 37 BBs to 36 K's.

I am positive that the Royals will break him.

I thought breaking pitchers was more their speed.

TEX was so desperate to make a splash this past offseason, we all know they signed both Seager and Semien to huge deals, but also they had Jonah Heim and Jose Trevino all set to split C (both now with good shots to be All-Stars backing up Kirk) and they decided to trade for Mitch Garver on March 12, which in turn forced them to choose between Heim and Trevino. They understandably kept the younger switch-hitting Heim, Cashman pounced on Trevino and we know the rest. NY is now 32-7 in games Trevino has started, he is very high on the list of their team MVPs thus far.

OK this is strange. Runners on second and third go on a pitch which is a lineout. Throws over to third and tags the runner from second now on standing on third for the third out of the inning. But they give the Pirates the run from the guy on third because they didn't appeal (?)

It's currently a one run game so that extra run the Pirates were gifted is huge.

My guess is that because he tagged the runner before touching the base, it is not a force out and the run counts? Not 100% sure on the rule but that's my only plausible explanation.

It would have been easier to throw to 2nd and ends the inning.

So if I followed that correctly:
• The 1st base umpire screwed up by ruling it not a catch
• There are three outs regardless, so the Nats left the field
• Then the umpires can't fix their mistake and take the run off the board because the Nats left the field before knowing they needed to appeal the umpire's mistake

I've never heard of having to appeal for a fictional extra out, but apparently, that's what that Nats should have done.

Tweet: The last two paragraphs here may explain it. Basically, the Nationals were required to make another appeal to technically record a "fourth out" before the defense left the field. This obviously doesn't happen often.

So is the appeal only necessary because the third baseman tagged the runner first? Because immediately after he tagged the runner, he stepped on the bag. Otherwise, how is stepping on the bag not taking care of the mythical "fourth out".

It's not a force play at all. The runners left before the ball was caught, so they have to tag up before advancing. Touching the base while in possession of the ball, before the runner returns, is all that is necessary to call the runner out.

I get that. But he tagged the runner furst and that was the 3rd out. So at that point does the run count? Interesting

Wow, to me the umps totally shit the bed on this play. There was one out, batter lines out to the first baseman, two outs. Runners don't tag, throw to third tags the runner from second, 3 outs, inning over.

I mean, the runner on third never even tagged up, there's no way he should have scored.

The umpires definitely screwed the pooch regardless of technicalities, but I guess the lesson here is that at least one infielder needs to be aware and stay on the field whenever there is still any confusion about what just happened on a play. Although that rule defining leaving the field as the pitcher and all infielders leaving fair territory is really dumb… so none of the outfielders can stay on the field to lodge the appeal? The catcher can't because he's probably already outside fair territory?

9 ER allowed by Pagan in 4 appearances against CLE in the last 9 days, just 2.1 innings total. Wow.

Alcantara went an unusual complete game tonight, gave up 3 runs and was down 3-2 int he 9th until the final out when Avisail Garcia hit a 2 run HR, then closed it out himself. 117 pitches and needed a DP to finish it. Pretty old school but he's been very efficient all year.

Mark Appel with a scoreless major league debut inning, including a strikeout.

Nice feel good story. Hope he can stick around the bigs.

This still confuses me. The third baseman had the ball and touched third base. Thus, the runner on third who did not tag up on the line drive out SHOULD BE out, no? Why is an appeal even necessary?

Because tagging the runner before stepping on third base was the third out of the inning. Stepping the third base was a "fourth out" and the Nats needed to know before they left the field (which isn't a realistic expectation) that they were required to appeal the play, in which case they could have chosen to make the 4th out the 3rd out… I think.

Of course, the runner did not tag and then left the field of play himself ("outside the base path")… so it's certainly weird that the rules reward the guy who screwed up multiple times.

Minnesota is really trying to hand Cleveland a win this afternoon with 9 walks and 2 errors… the Guardiac Kids finally oblige and score twice in the bottom of the 8th to knot it up 3-3. If Baldelli goes to Pagan, he might be fired on the spot.

Andres Gimenez! Second walk-off home run in the past 24 hours!

Josh Naylor just missed doing it again, planting one just foul down the right field line and into the 2nd deck. Gimenez has pretty much been the best "clutch" hitter in the league this year… Cleveland broadcasters were openly wondering throughout the at-bat why Minnesota didn't put him on with 1st base open anyway and pitch to Franmil Reyes who has been struggling since he came off the IL last week (and has struggled nearly the whole season).

The Twins out-homered Cleveland 10-2 in the 5-game series, but both home runs by the Guards were walk-offs. Strangely, these two don't face each other again until September 9th, when they'll play 8 times in 10 days.

For those of you disgruntled by the current Red Sox broadcasters, tune into the MLB network and catch John Kruk rambling on during the Phillies/Cards game as he regales about underaged drinking, pregnant woman and guys with shotguns. What a hoot.

Pirates let a reliever out to dry in a blowout in the 8th inning... 56 pitches and 8 runs scored. Don't know what the major league record for pitches thrown in an inning by one pitcher, but that must be pretty close.

That was a real dick move by Derek Shelton. No mound visits, nobody warming up to come in. And Vieaux has been a reliever in the minors this year, so 56 pitches is a hell of a lot for him.

Just trying to get close, I searched for pitchers who allowed 8 runs or more in an inning or less of work with at least 50 pitches thrown. These are the hits that go toward the question (the rest were pitchers who recorded no more than three outs but pitched in two different innings to do it):

Stan Belinda in 1994: 1 IP (6th inning), 8 runs, 57 pitches (vs Red Sox)

Taylor Phillips in 1957: 1 IP (8th inning), 8 runs, 55 pitches (at Brooklyn)

Jon Lester in 2017: 2/3 IP (1st inning), 10 runs, 53 pitches (vs Pirates)

Bryn Smith in 1993: 1/3 IP (3rd inning), 8 runs, 51 pitches (at Cincinnati)

Presumably inspired by former teammate Matt Carpenter, the Cardinals just homered four batters in a row against Kyle Gibson.

Based off of what I'm seeing, there are 22 instances all time of a pitcher getting through 1 or less innings in relief with 50 or more pitches thrown. Vieaux's 56 is 4th on that list, with Scott Brow ("I've literally never heard of him" - Stephen Toast) having thrown 66 pitches in an inning of work (though spanning the 1st and 2nd innings), allowing 6 runs on 6 walks and 5 hits in a 13-1 loss to the Red Sox on June 21, 1994. Amazingly, Brow didn't allow a singe home run in that appearance.

Of those four at the top, Vieaux and Stan Belinda were the only two I saw who only pitched in one inning (5th for Belinda, 8th for Vieaux)

And the lambs fought back today. Swept a doubleheader, 6-2 and 11-5. Isaac Paredes continues his breakout. 13 HR in 122 AB. .915 OPS.
The Jays were in serious pitching trouble after Gausman took a 100 MPH line drive off his ankle in the 2nd inning of the first game and had to leave the game. In the 2nd game they had to leave their AAA callup starter (who has no business pitching in the majors) in to soak up innings and damage - and he gave up 10 runs in 4 innings.

Isaac Paredes
Isaac Paredes 2022: .246/.301/.615 with 13 HRs in 40 games
Austin Meadows 2022: .250/.347/.328 with 0 HRs in 36 games

Paredes is under team control through 2026. Meadows is under team control through 2024. This trade was widely mocked when it happened, no?

Montas lifted after one inning in Seattle (he only gave up one run). Maybe an injury, maybe nothing... maybe a trade?
