Cleveland has been a better team on the road, at least their offense has been considerably better. Given the overall records, I'd assume it's a given they all have losing records on the road. In all of baseball, there are only 9 teams with winning road records, including just 3 in the entire NL.
Sons of Neifi Perez is locked down, so I'm hoping someone here knows this answer: why is Daniel Bard not closing for the Rockies? He has been electric this season and the Rockies lost today because their closer spit the bit. Just curious. Maybe they're illuminated enough to save him for high-leverage situations rather than just blindly having him close?
Electric? Bard started the year on the IL with some stress/mental health issues and hasn’t been the pitcher this year that he was last year. He has walked more guys than he has struck out. His era is low but that doesn’t really work for relief pitchers.
100%. 1.50 WHIP and 5.59 FIP while walking 8.8 batters per 9 innings. He’s been lucky, not good.
I should start a 2023 team thread for them, but in the meantime, brutal brutal loss for the Mets trying not to be swept by the Braves and lose their sixth in a row. This should have been a desperation series for them against the division leaders, after being swept at home last weekend by TOR, and this was how it went down:
Tuesday, NY up 4-1 through 5, veteran Carrasco on the mound, lose 6-4.
Wednesday, Scherzer on the mound, NY up 4-1 again mid-5 and lose 7-5.
Tonight, Verlander on the mound, but they hammer Strider even without Alonso in the lineup, up again 9-5 mid-5. ATL creeps back, the over his head Showalter tries to get 5 outs from David Robertson, who gets 3 of 5 before Arcia blasts a HR to tie it at 10, bottom 9. Iglesias gets three guys in a row top 10, Albies with another no doubter off the bat, walkoff 3 run HR bottom 10, 13-10 final.
Six losses in a row, 30-33, first time in franchise history they have lost three straight games while up by 3 at least in all of them. Their three SPs in this series are making $101M between them this season:
Carrasco: 5 6 4 4 2 4 , 86 pitches, 5.94 ERA in 36.1 innings/7 starts.
Scherzer: 5.2 11 5 5 0 10, 103 pitches, 3.71 ERA now in 53.1 innings/10 starts.
Verlander: 3 7 5 4 4 3, 82 pitches, 4.85 ERA now in 39 innings/7 starts.
So 13.2 innings combined for those three in this series, 24 hits and 6 walks allowed, 13 ERs. Good job Steve.

Robertson has been good in his place, but not having Diaz has also contributed to their poor start. Having to use Robertson as the closer put Ottavino back in the high leverage set up role, and he’s struggled. He couldn’t hold runners even before the rule changes and bigger bases. Now every leadoff walk/hit is like an automatic double.
Jose Ramirez goes deep again tonight to wipe out what was an early 4-run Houston lead. He also hit a double high off the wall earlier in the game. I think the off-season thumb surgery was an unsaid obstacle earlier this season, but the power stroke is back. This is never going to be a lineup that strikes fear into opposing pitchers unless they magically solve their decade-long search for a power-hitting outfielder, but they've scored at least 4 runs in 10 of their last 12 games.
Jeremy Pena turns an easy double-play ball that would have sealed an Astros victory into a throwing error that ties the game... and we head to the 13th.
A little bobble by Jose Ramirez leads to the Astros retaking the lead. Bottom of the inning – Kwan bloops one into left and they make what appeared to be a poor decision to wave the runner around third... but Chaz McCormick unleashes a little league throw somewhere towards the infield. So we head to the 14th.
Houston scored in the 14th when Xzavion Curry bounced a breaking ball that 3rd string catcher David Fry blocked but lost – runner to 3rd – and then a ground ball through the drawn-in infield. Then Cleveland tied and won it with doubles from Tyler Freeman and Will Brennan. The Guardians came from behind 5 times tonight.
I thought Tito should have walked Tucker in the 14th to set up the DP. I know Abreu hit a HR in the 1st inning but he has been terrible all year.
I'm really impressed with the opposite field power when I see highlights. And he already took the team-friendly extension.

Buck Showalter’s seat has to be getting hot. Mets have now lost 8 of 9. If the Yankees go into Citi Field this week and beat Scherzer and Verlander, the pitch forks might come out.
Diamondbacks come from behind to win, are now 40-25. At least one of my preseason predictions is coming true.
Keep an eye on Nolan Jones. He has been lighting it up and has big power.

I keep forgetting he got traded to the Rockies. He obliterated the PCL hitting .356/.481/.711. Doesn't hurt that he's going from Albuquerque to Denver.
Hopefully just the same thing he dealt with last year as opposed to somthing more serious.
Tim Anderson and Andrew Benintendi, making a combined $27.5M this year, have 453 PA’s and 0 home runs.
Rays took 2 out of 3 from TX. McClanahan/Glasnow/Eflin are rock solid, Bradley is hit or miss and then they punt every 5th day. If they could add a starter at the deadline, would be huge.
It's not happening right now and it won't happen as long as Halos stick around, but do you think Rays would strongly consider a rental trade for Ohtani?
Fun fact, Albuquerque is about 50 feet higher than Denver in terms of elevation.
Why do you tease me like this? Hard to imagine the Rays actually being the high bidder in any kind of auction, even for a 2 month rental, but they’d definitely kick the tires on that. Seems more likely they do something less splashy, which may be all they need.

If Cleveland still looks as good as they have the past couple of weeks when they return from San Diego and Arizona they aren't likely to be dealing their ace at the deadline. They've received very little advantage from playing the AL Central so far and still have all of their 13 games against the Royals left to play. They've gone 4-0-1 in their last 5 series and if the offense is finally passably functional, they'll be passing Minnesota before long. Even if this turns out to be a year to restock, a year-and-a-half of Bieber certainly is not going to be a cheap acquisition for someone. It would start with a MLB-ready outfielder with power.
