Let’s not praise a team that still has Tyreke Hill on the roster
Their Super Bowl chances just took a significant hit. Had they rode this out, they may well have had him back for the playoffs.

Well, more than anything is they don’t want to lose their star RB. Second is they don’t give a shit. See, e.g., drafting Tyreke. Third they don’t want to draw attention to the fact they don’t give a shit.
Would you want to take the PR hit unless you "have to"? Because either the media isn't going to care or you're going to end up suspending indefinitely or cutting him anyway to soothe the outrage machine. It's a sunk cost basically.

I'll be interested in seeing what Vegas thinks, but I don't think their chances took all that much of a hit. Ware is perfectly capable of being the lead back on a SB team.

The Chiefs/league knew about this since February and either saw the video and either covered up as long as possible or half assed the “investigation” and took him at his word. Either one is bad, plus there’s the whole Tyreke Hill angle.

Maybe I'm cynical, but I don't see this as a "good job" by the Chiefs. They tried to get away with it, got caught and then acted like they were taking the high road. I find it hard to believe they didn't already know exactly what occurred, regardless if they saw the video. (Which if also bs - if you're a victim of domestic abuse or assault, it only counts if there is video...)
Yeah, I'm leaning much more towards this take than the "good for them for doing the right thing" take. I mean, Tyreek Hill is still on the team. You know, the guy that did this.

They tried their best to look the other way, their hand was forced, then they finally did the right thing 9 months later. I wouldn't be surprised if the NFL reached out to the team and let them know they were going to drop the hammer, and the optics would be better if the team acted first. Schefter pretty much said as much on SportsCenter. If the Chiefs didn't act, the NFL would have.

I assume we’re going to learn more about who knew what and when in the days ahead. I’ll wait to pass judgment on the Chiefs until that plays out.
Since they cut him, I imagine the League will tell everyone to clam up and try to just bury it.

Taking the KC statements at face value, it’s interesting that TMZ sports has the ability to find these surveillance tapes when no one else can get them. I wonder what is happening behind the scenes? Is it hard working journalism or are they just paying off low level security staff?

Good for KC with their fast action, again, assuming they really haven’t seen the tapes until today.

If TMZ can find the video 9 months later, either the investigation was incompetent or they didn't really want to investigate. Either one is pretty damning for the Chiefs and the NFL.

Money, money, money, moneeyyyyyyyyyy. TMZ is paying everyone, everywhere. At least, that's what I always thought.

I agree with you. If KC really tried to obtain the tape from the hotel and were shot down, then the police and were shot down, they reached out to the victim and got no response, what were they left with? The words of Kareem Hunt and whatever other witnesses came forward.

The tape came out, they saw it, they released his ass. Until there is evidence to show that they really could have gotten the tape, or really did half-ass the investigation, you have to at least appreciate what they did today. If it comes out that they are lying too, and they either could have gotten, or did see the tape and were just hoping it would go away, then fuck them.

The dude that stole that girls phone deserves to face charges too, IMO. That's assault and battery, and theft. And if she was making a 911 call, there could be other charges. Fuck whoever that piece of shit was...

Is it illegal or unethical for KC or the NFL to pay for the tape? I guess some kind of tortuous interference civilly, but is it a crime to offer money for a civilian employee to breech his contract by making a copy of a tape?

This doesn't jive with the "Chiefs tried their best to get to the truth" narrative. TMZ has enough money to expose Kareem Hunt but the Chiefs don't have enough money to figure out whether or not their star RB is an abuser of women? That doesn't make any sense. Who has a greater vested interest here?

I'm sure the Chiefs/NFL asked for the video, were shot down, and then were like, "Hey, we tried!" GJGE. See no evil, hear no evil. And then the video gets released 9 months later and it's full damage control. That is the very definition of incompetence.

I have no idea why anyone would want to give the Chiefs/NFL the benefit of the doubt here.

Not that any prosecutor would ever bring charges, but I think the employee would be committing theft by making an unauthorized copy of his/her employer’s copyrighted work. So yes, I would think offering payment as an inducement for the employee to do that would be a crime.

TMZ is in a different position: assuming the employee approached them with the tape, the theft had already taken place, so they weren’t paying someone to commit a crime. They’d have a clear First Amendment right to publish the stolen video if it were freely given to them; paying for it might be a bit dicier, but TMZ is in that line of business, so I’m sure their lawyers have worked through that.

In any event, I find it odd that people are criticizing the NFL’s ethics for not mimicking the business practices of tabloid journalism.

The people slinging mud look clean next to the dudes rolling in shit. But I’d say they can use those tactics when it comes to finding out the truth about one of their employees in a situation like this. I don’t have a problem with it. No clue why the employee wouldn’t go to the team first. Harvey Levin has millions, Hunt has billions.

Definitely not my area of expertise, but I think the First Amendment is key here. There’s a huge difference between a news outlet paying to obtain a newsworthy but illicitly obtained video (what TMZ did), and an employer paying for stolen property to find dirt on one of its employees (what you’re suggesting the NFL should have done).

Sounds like something they can do through a middleman then, maybe. I get that it’s technically stolen property, but I don’t have any moral outrage for someone making a copy of a security tape and getting an abuser fired.

Agreed, but where would it stop if Goodell got a taste of illegally obtained video and likes the possibilities? Would they pay to prove a person did/didn’t use drugs, throw a party, screw a teammates wife, etc. It’s just dirty business and while this exception fits one level of my morals, I wouldn’t expect that I would feel the same way if they did it for things less serious than this.

What are the chances a hotel employee is anything other than at will? If the NFL got the video and Hunt didn’t strike or kick the woman, nobody would ever know they paid for it. If they got it and saw what he did, it seems doubtful the hotel would litigate the issue.

I'm sorry I started the discussion and didn't come back. Let's put aside the legality issues or contract issues or employee/employer issues or Goodell for a moment. What makes people think the Kansas City Chiefs are in a position to even know how to get a tape illegally like that? TMZ does this every day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, and it still took them 9 months to get the tape. If TMZ had the tape earlier, you can bet your ass we would have seen it.

Why do we even assume anyone in the Chiefs would know how to obtain a tape like this? Who would they call once they were shot down? There weren't any arrests or charges at the time (and still aren't, I don't believe) and if you read the articles that were released, and the police reports from the time of the incident, it sounded like a lot less than what was on the tape. I don't know. I'm just not ready to bury the Chiefs over this, especially in light of how quickly they acted today, but I'll certainly reserve judgment until we have more/all of the information.

The NFL though? Fuck them. And fuck Goodell. They've made their bed and they can lie in it. And I have no doubt they can find plenty of sleezy dirtbags out there willing to do whatever it takes to get their hands on the tape.

Jerry is going to be coming for Rog with his sharpest blade, that’s for sure.
I'm actually looking forward to this. I hope Jerrah is still seething over the Zeke suspension and hasn't smoothed it over with Goodell yet.

If Goodell's enemies can expose that he knew about this months ago, that would be pure gold to watch.

I know there must be other examples, but my brain isnt functioning too goodly.

What are some comparable instances of a team with championship aspirations cutting one of their star players this late in the season and while in a battle for playoff seeding/a bye week?

It seems that with the Chiefs cutting him the most likely result is that nothing will happen and the league will promise an investigation and try to ride it out until the end of the year.

If the other clubs tacitly agree or even just avoid bringing him in then there is nothing really to be done.

Think a Democratic House might call for hearings? Just curious. Free moral outrage points. Also the House Judiciary Committee got involved with Rice fiasco.

Edit: Didn't see he got released. Wow, welcome to Washington Kareem Hunt.
Why would the Democracts call for hearings? He lied to the team and investigators and got released.

I’m not saying the NFL and Chiefs tried exceptionally hard to get the tape - I don’t know. But TMZ has a real advantage when it comes to illicitly obtained media.

Come on, don’t give me the babe in the woods routine, Karen.

NFL security personnel aren’t hired because they have “Pheasant Lane Mall Security” on their resumés. These guys are all ex-FBI, Secret Service, NYPD, CPD, and LAPD. Not washouts, either. High achievers who left those jobs behind to get paid (note: this is said without judgement on that decision). In other words, the idea the NFL didn’t know how to investigate whether or not there was footage of this incident beggars belief

The only reason they didn’t have this footage is they deliberately refused to look for it.

Holy shit. Great on the Chiefs for leading the way with a good example, hoping (if doubtful) more teams will follow this lead.

Also thought this was fake at first too, did the same as amfox1.
Good job by Chiefs. That escalated quickly.
You have to give them full credit for this, no two ways about it.
I'm going to respectfully disagree here with giving Chiefs credit. Seems like they released hm because he lied to them, not because he assaulted a woman for not sleeping with a friend of his.

I find it amusing that some here think things like "the law" would get in the way of billion dollar corporations acting in their own self-interests. If the Chiefs/NFL wanted to get their hands on that tape, they easily could have done so. That they didn't should tell one all that they need to know. Or, more likely, they did get their hands on that tape, they just didn't plan on anyone sharing it. Or didn't pay off all of the right people.

Marciano basically already answered your question:
You mean the middleman ice? Sort of, not really. Even if you set out to pay someone off, there’s no guarantee you’ll find the right person who has both the opportunity and the stones to acquire the tape while also not tipping your hand to the people who control the only copies. TMZ has the luxury of these people coming forward to them and self-identifying.

Why would the hotel refuse to give it?
I have idea and I qualified my post by saying the Chiefs may not have tried very hard. But that wasn’t the question I was addressing. A few people specifically asked why the the Chiefs couldn’t buy it, and that is what I quoted.

Did TMZ just get the tape recently? If TMZ got the tape months ago and for whatever reason waited until now to release it, then you can blame the Chiefs and the league for not doing the appropriate legwork on their investigation. However, this incident happened in February and TMZ may have just gotten the tape this week, which is kind of odd. It wasn’t like the Hunt incident has been in the news every week since February; to me it seems like someone leaked the video to TMZ.

The Chiefs knew there was an incident and had every incentive to run down what happened. It’s possible TMZ didn’t even know to go sniffing until recently.
