You guys understand that Minihane is a comedian right? He does a comedy show. It's not an information show. It's perplexing to me that individuals are unwilling to acknowledge that a personality can be a brilliant comedic talent and still be uninformed about complex social issues. It's not for a sophisticated dialogue about the climate crisis, economic inequity, or systemic oppression that brings listeners to Minihane. It's simple comedic stagecraft. He is clearly the funniest radio character since '90s Stern. Minihane is an heir both to Stern, as well as the tradition of insult comedy. He shits on everybody, and is better at it- at least in an improvisational context- than anybody currently working. Admittedly, as an ardent supporter of Senators Warren and Sanders, the lack of factual understanding that lingers behind some of Minihane's takes can be irksome. However, it is possible to divorce the comedic artistry from the under informed political slant. If Jon Stewart or Jon Oliver did 4 hours of extempore radio programming in the morning, I'd probably listen to them. But they ain't walkin through that door... and yes Callahan is an obtuse blowhard, but he's really just there as a prop just like the other characters and callers.
Well said.

On T&R this morning Rich referenced new ratings were out and T&R were in the lead however a quick google search did not turn up those specific ratings.
T&R and Zo & Bertrand have had a hard time with the "facts" since K&C and OMF passed them in the ratings. They are now doing everything they accused WEEI of doing in terms of fudging the numbers to appear #1.

Aren't comedians supposed to be funny?
Comedy is subjective. People find Kevin Hart and Dane Cook funny too.

I almost forgot about the Dunkin' Donuts incident from years ago. It's seems almost quaint for the station to loose advertising dollars for trashing one of its sponsors on the air. One thing I notice about K&C is how few ad reads they do, especially Minihane, and I can only remember Callahan shilling for a firm his brother-in-law owns. Felger and Mazz do far more in comparison.
Kirk does Cumberland Farms and 1-2 other ones, IIRC. But it's usually as lead-in on the podcast and not the live show.

That's a great excuse, but has he ever referred to himself that way?
If you told Minihane you thought he was a great comedian, he'd threaten to kick your ass like Tommy DeVito.

Comedy is subjective, but it is also relative. Which personality currently on over-the-air radio is funnier than Minihane? Honest question.

"Relative" might make him the world's tallest midget, as they say.

Is he *trying* to be funny?

I guess this is my point. Minihane isn't funny. Unless you're into his fake tough guy act and picking on reporters from other regions, I don't find that funny. I also don't find Sporty McKenzie funny. He's a 45 year old frat boy with rich parents who acts like a tough guy. I've got enough of those in my life I don't want to listen to that fake act on the radio.

I'd put Rich, Hardy and Keefe above Minihane on the funny scale, because they're honest when they're doing bits that are funny. They have some great bits, they have some total duds as well, but they actually try.

I really don't find anything Minihane does funny. Making fun of gay people, liberals and media members and attacking them isn't funny, it's lame. Add that on to his whole thing is an act makes everything he does less funny. The whole casting couch thing is old, bring people on, make fun of them, tell them they make the show suck, fake ban them, then bring them back, then make fun of them again, rinse and repeat.

To the point of someone else in this thread, I'm not a regular listener. When I turn it on it's on a commercial break on T&R, if they have Brady on or if it's before 6am and I'd rather listen to them than Amy Lawrence who is the worst of the worst. I've said it a million times in this thread, but I could never listen to the show because they constantly talk over each other, which is the worst thing in radio. 2-3 people trying to talk over each other for 4 hours is awful radio no matter what they're talking about.

So liking the show makes me a member of the media? You could ask a mod to run my IP address and it'll show up as Minnesota.

I know actually liking something is a foreign concept to this forum, but you should try it sometime.

Minihane isn't funny. I genuinely don't understand how anyone can find him funny. I guess someone can say that comedy is subjective, but -- to me -- an essential part of comedy is finding absurdity in actuality, and/or punching up. I don't think Minihane is capable of the former, and has zero desire to do the latter. To use a reference in this thread, Dane Cook is a million times funnier than Minihane, and that's saying something. Granted, I don't listen to the show anymore, but I'm pretty sure I'm still correct on this.

Edit: seriously, are you Kirk? I find it hilarious that you're going to lecture the board on liking stuff while defending a show that doesn't like anything other than misery and schadenfreude.

1) VPNs are a thing.
2) If you are from MN, it's rather sad that you spend so much time digging into the manufactured drama that is Boston Sports Radio.
3) It's ok for people to like things that you don't and vice versa. Why do you care if your binky isn't everyone's cup of tea?
4) How did the sensitivity training go today for you?

Shouting match Kirk and the guys from the DHK show in the sensitivity training. Its a mess at WEEI.

So they’re trying to cultivate a narrative out of the sensitivity training that basically supports their emotive outburst approach to discussion in underscoring how seriously they took it?

This is an interesting take on turning scandal into product.

Yes, I’m that cynical about this platform. :)

Hey Kir, errrr MN GOATwhatever, I read that article. Does it bother you that D&H can hear Callahan's dog whistles, and can see through them? I feel like it bothers you.
I feel like it bothers all the people here that I like not just K&C but WEEI at all, a lot more. We're going so far as to take shots at me and insinuate that I'm actually a member of the show or media? That's fucking rich. Grow up.

Interesting it's between Kirk and the show with the black guy

Edit: Unclear who initiated it
If you're gonna cherry pick the article, lets pick this part too.

“As for things I did not expect to see — and you guys are not going to believe it and maybe he’ll talk more about it on ‘Kirk and Callahan’ on Monday morning — but Kirk, Dale, Holley and Keefe, after they were a part of this pretty loud back-and-forth during the meeting, the three of those guys sat down and broke bread. I watched those four guys sit there and have lunch together. And I never, ever would have believed that going into the meeting. Sitting there having lunch together. Kirk Minihane is pulling his salad and his sandwich up to lunch with those guys. That sort of sums up the meeting here to me.”

I wouldn’t know any of these people if I backed over them with my car, but if you’re interpreting the good fun some people are having here as annoyance, we’ll, then, that might shed some light on the different viewpoints with respect to humor referred to herein.

One way of snother, let’s hope we can keep it fun, eh?

I havent listened to a minute of this show in at least 10+ years, but i'm glad I occasionally dip into this thread for shit like this:

Because the people in this building care a lot about these radio shows and care a lot about this station and really care a lot about you guys [the listeners]. … Topics and shows that you guys are proud to listen to — that’s the goal here for me, and I got the feeling here today, that’s the goal for guys who were in the huge conference room yelling back and forth for a large portion of this meeting today.
The takez make it worth it. They live for the takes. The takes are so fucking spicy hot that a little racism might pop in every now and then, but they fucking care!

My fucking goodness these people need to get a little perspective.

Well it's not news, sports, traffic, weather or Terri Gross...so it might as well be placed under the comedy umbrella. Minihane did agree in his conversation with The Hill Man that their job is essentially to "make people laugh in the morning" , so there's that. Perhaps "rhetorician" would be a more accurate job description. His mind does move very quickly. I don't really think this can be denied. He formulates and articulates ideas with a rapidity which I often find impressive. Those ideas can occasionally be insightful and are often insidious. But the underlying cognitive talent presents itself with consistency, and I think this is why I find his performances engaging. Also impressive is the fact that he does his thing for 1000 hours a year with no writers, directors, actors, script or budget. To put that in perspective, Jon Stewart did a show for 80 minutes a week with 15 writers and managed to be funny half the time. I applaud Minihane's effort to take a hopelessly stale sports talk format and turn it into a genre bending sit-com/soap opera/reality show. To completely disregard the accepted norms of the format- as Letterman and Stern did before him- does require a certain amount of creative courage. For this reason I am accepting of occasional segments that may be tedious or offensive.

Jon Stewart, Letterman, and Stern are funny, and Minihane is not. They don't belong in the same class, and to compare him to them is risible.

But the fact that his defenders here think that by 'explaining' his appeal they can make him interesting or funny or engaging is pretty funny.

I'm not sure what he's like now, but back when he was married to Allison he would talk about how his penis was small, he'd spend most of his day hiding in his basement masturbating, how ugly he was, he uncomfortable he was around celebrities; stuff like that. It felt like he was just a regular SoSHer -- a loudmouth, no doubt -- but a guy who was a regular dude.

If you think that all of the things that Minihane says is off the cuff, you're wrong.

And comparing him to Stewart, Letterman or Stern is also wrong.

But otherwise, terrific post!

Edit: actually, let me put this on you: if Kirk Minihane is so funny name one joke, bit, aside or remark that made you laugh. Don't just say, "Uh, it's his entire personality" because that's really not very funny. Like at all.

Stewart had jokes and bits. Letterman had jokes and bits. Stern, the same thing. Were they all homers? Nope. But more of them hit than missed, though YMMV. Aside for calling a woman a slut, saying that person X should be fired, threatening to quit; what does Kirk Minihane do that's funny? That makes him, in your mind, a comedian. Not only that, but someone who, "makes other people laugh".

The segment leading up to when he busted Borges last week was pretty hilarious. If I can get a couple chuckles a week out of him a week then he's done his job. It's not easy to find funny these days, so i'm grateful when it happens. Simmons is no longer funny, SNL sucks, Stern stopped trying, Trevor Noah just makes me miss Stewart...it's hard out there for jaded old farts like myself. He's doing a 13 share at drive time, so clearly I'm not alone. Admittedly, part of the attraction is like that of watching a slow motion train crash.

At any rate, I'm going to enjoy him while I can before he burns himself alive. His war with John Henry and Joe Kennedy will ultimately be lost. I would guess he will be muzzled or fired soon enough.

You should be his agent. He's basically playing a raging asshole (which he completely denies is a character) and feeds into and off of his racist, liberal hating cohost (who is not playing a character but is just an awful person). I guess if you find that amusing and you love it being a mix of the WWE (which is hilarious since they mock it), Kardashians and Fox News, you are their exact target audience.

For this reason I am accepting of occasional segments that may be tedious or offensive
Occasional? I suppose the Reimer suspended and Trenni away the offensive segments are probably a lot less. This way they can just shit on Tanguay, who no one ever feels bad for.

I would say he is more of a performance artist than a comedian. And I bet a lot of his rants and bits are pre-scripted. Radio is a lot more like that than the audience generally thinks. Callers may be staffers, interns, or paid writers. The arguments between him and other members of the show could be pre-arranged and talking points planned out. It's how you make 4 hours work. Random chance doesn't cut it often enough. I think him eating with Holly and Keefe is more of an example of how even his animosity with them or the sensitivity training was "worked" and not real.

I mean, I find them as despicable as the next person but, you guys do realize they get incredible ratings, right? Is it really that hard to believe that one of their sycophants found their way to this thread? Sad to say but there are a lot of them.

The thing I love is this "oh he's just a comedian/personality/character" defense, yet when Chad Finn calls their show fake they act like it's the biggest affront they've ever heard.

Also, what the Globe did is no different than the NYT contacting actors who have worked with Woody Allen and asking them on the record if the allegations against him make them regret it or if they would do so again the future. This idea that it's some anti-journalistic rogue activity is just transparent spin from EEI morons trying to save themselves.

The funny thing is I actually listen to K&C and never Sports Hub, the difference is I'm a grown man and I don't attach my identity to my radio heroes and parrot their talking points when they get in trouble for peddling racist garbage.

What is wrong with Callahan's voice? I tuned in this morning and it sounded like he was doing the show from his death bed.

I only heard a snippet of the convo regarding the friday meeting but Callahan said something to the effect 'have we said all the words we need to say this morning? Meeting was productive.....check, healthy discussion.....check, learned something......check, etc.'

I did find one bit of this morning's show interesting. They were having a contrived conversation about whether to make Mut the full time 3rd seat. Kirk said he mentioned this to "management" and they were concerned because Kirk usually fights with Tomase, Trenni, etc. Not surprising that they like the conflict, but interesting that it was mentioned openly on air.

I could be wrong as I don’t listen to them much Mutt seems like a pretty good host and decent person, at least since his DUI which seems to have been a wake up call. I enjoy Mutt and Keefe at 6.
