Looks like the French defense had the same opinion about Di Maria as some here!

LOL yeah DiMaria is the problem.
If you don’t think DiMaria has been carrying a giant anchor all World Cup (and the last couple of club seasons), you’re way off.

Great shot by a formerly great player with all the time in the world.

So why does it seem that the European teams are always outnumbered in the stands? Is it a matter of the neutrals (Russians) rooting for the non-Europe teams?

Can't stand the yellow card rules. All it takes is one hothead ref and a decent acting job and poof, you miss a game. Dumb.

Yeah getting two yellow cars over 4 games is not some sign of a reckless player that needs to sit out.

And since I shit on him, let’s also credit ADM for tracking back on Pogba there. Signs of life.
I thought they missed him in the second game. He’s not the same player as he has been but the only player that seemed to have any chemistry with Messi.

So as bad as Argentina's tactics have mostly been, I think it helped create the goal. The interchanging of attackers confused the defense -- France was not expecting ADM to pop up in the middle there.

I think Mbappe's runs are actually working against France see this point. They're basically looking hail Mary every time, leading to a massive possession advantage to Argentina, which you don't want when you have the lead and as many skill players as France has up front.

If you set the limit of cards to three however you li provide an incentive for more dirty challenges?
I remember Blatter talking about this. He was opposed to resetting them at all, despite the networks demanding they reset late in the tournament to reduce the chances of stars missing the final. I think at one time yellows didn’t even reset between qualification and the final tournament.

I’m pretty sure that FIFA has been adamant in telling the federations that two yellows is a suspension even if your final round is ten games like South America.

Blatter was a criminal, but the old school FIFA mentality he represented is that playing without drawing a yellow is a skill and that if you don’t get cautions you don’t have anything to worry about.

They were looking not for a Hail Mary. They were looking to hit Argentina on the counter as they were moving more bodies forward. This is the kind of game where the counter attacking team could score 4-5 goals if the breaks go their way, obviously different game now way that Argentina equalized.

Well, that’s why Messi wants him out there...but he also wants Mascherano too and his best days are behind him.

The biggest problem in the second game was formation and effort- there could have been 2014 DiMaria on the pitch and they’d have gotten killed.

I feel bad because I’ve always liked DiMaria. I don’t remember him at Benfica, but I did catch him at the 2008 Olympics and was impressed. Dude has played a lot of footy though, and like many of the European based South American players, plays older than he is.

Is there a story behind the lack of Pastore appearances for the national team? He seems the type of creative mid they’ve lacked throughout the Messi era but he’s hardly even spoken of. I don’t watch much PSG - has he fallen off that much from his first tour in Seria A?

I think the reset in the quarters is done to lessen the chance of stars missing the most important games - namely the semis and the final.

Mind you I the two yellow = suspension is kind of dumb. I’d make it three - and no reset.

Was just thinking to myself that Messi was strolling about the far side of the box in a suspicious manner on that set piece
