A possibility France may go through all of the CONMEBOL qualifiers (Peru in the group, Argentina in the R16, Uruguay in the Quarters, Brazil in the Semis and Colombia in the Final).

You lost me at ‘Colombia in the Final.’ Interesting nonetheless.

Nowhere else really to put this so here goes.... my predictions.... (I know you all care about this immensely).

Round of 16
Uruguay over Portugal
France over Argentina
Brazil over Mexico
Belgium over Japan
Spain over Russia
Croatia over Denmark
Switzerland over Sweden
Colombia over England

Quarterfinals
France over Uruguay
Brazil over Belgium
Spain over Croatia
Colombia over Switzerland

Semifinals
France over Brazil
Spain over Columbia

Finals
France over Spain

Now, of course, Argentina will knock France out on Saturday and Ronaldo will score a hat trick leading Portugal to a win.
Heh can't believe I got both games right today. Blind squirrels, acorns and all that.

I believe Portugal were slight favorites (at least according to fivethirtyeight)

I think people are underselling Spain’s age and the quality of the bracket. Yes, the other half is crazy stacked. But there’s some really nice teams in Spain’s half. Better than Morocco or Iran who gave them trouble. I think Russia kind of sucks, but whether it is home field or Ivan Drago-ish sports medicine they were awesome the first two games. Spain is not a shoo-in against that version of Russia.

It sucks that we again missed out on a Argentina-Portugal matchup, but it’s also fitting that Messi and Ronaldo are eliminated on the same day. The end of their rivalry is near. It’s unlikely they both will be at Qatar and far less likely they will both still be playing at an elite level. Ronaldo has yet to confirm that he’s returning to Real Madrid. I’m hoping there’s a little more of them two competiting against each other in Spain. Otherwise, it’s been a lot of fun to watch them pushing one another to amazing levels.

VT have you seen any explanation for Cedric not playing today? I was watching on Univision on my phone so maybe it was explained but I missed it. I wouldn’t say Ricardo was at fault per se on either goal but he maybe could have done more on each

Theme of the tournament so far IMO is - sacred cows, time to get gored.

Spain- meh. Brazil- meh. Goodbye Germany, and goodby also Germany of South America.

Uruguay not exactly a newcomer, but they along with Croatia and Belgium, look tough to beat. Colombia, England, Russia and Mexico all have some potential.

I haven’t seen one other than coach’s decision. If the idea was that Ricardo could give them more offense, I wouldn’t agree with Santos on that and would again question leaving Nelson Semedo off the squad. Building off OilCan’s point, I think Low and Santos went with trusted older/class players who looked out of form and left off younger players who were in form. Quaresma and the centerbacks paid off, but the fullbacks did not. Swapping in Ricardo was likely just a roll of the dice.

England and Sweden are benefitting from utilizing players who have won recent titles at the youth levels.
