Spain vs. Russia
Bravest man in Russia is the head referee for this one. Russia looked pretty good in their first two, but were destroyed by Uruguay. Of course, right now Uruguay looks pretty effing good. Spain never looked quite as good as we thought they might, but still topped their group and would seem to have enough to survive the hosts. I'm thinking close for a half then Spain pulls away--3-1 ESP.

Croatia vs. Denmark
Croatia seems to be emerging as a darkhorse fan favorite, going undefeated in their group and playing fun soccer, beating Nigeria, Argentina, and Iceland. Denmark beat Peru 1-0, drew Australia 1-1, and somehow held France off the scoresheet in a 0-0 draw. They'll need to continue to play good defense as Croatia can score. Not sure they will, as Croatia controls the game and ends up with a 2-0 win.

You might get it. I think Russia is extremely flattered by having their first two scorelines be against Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

Russia's "breakout star" is their one foreign-league player, Cheryshev, who came up through Real Madrid and plays for Villarreal. Spain's entire lineup has seen him twice a year, several of them probably were juniors with him.

Reposting my own Twitter joke so I can get the GIF in:

Tired: Watching adult films for stimulation

Wired: Watching replays of that Pavard goal on loop

Cheryshev starts on the bench, possibly because of said reason.

Will be in Split the week of the 9th, need Croatia to win two more to be there for the Semi. Would very much look forward to heavy drinking with the Croatians. Win that, I'd re-arrange my schedule to stay for the final

Is there anything more Ramos than an elaborate prickish celebration on an own goal with which he never made contact?

I can’t believe I’m actually a little disappointed Russia didn’t score. Watching Spain play four corners sucks.

God this game is boring. Russia is a bad team and Spain decided to play a very boring negative ball control game.

This is fascinating to watch. I don’t get why people still struggle to watch possession teams play. Also Russia must have doped up like madmen they are like a team full of Kantes

90% pass accuracy on 514 passes. Lolz

They are making me root for Russia.
If Russia nicks one late they will never live this down. After yesterday this is a shame. Spain looked at the rankings and decided they can win without being Spain.

It’s the complete refusal to be direct or even overlap in the final third that’s infuriating.

Russia have 9 behind the ball and are conceding the entire midfield. The only direct plays are shots from distance. They need to pass it through
They are just standing around. Nobody is even making an attempt for space.

But they aren't really trying to do that. Very few probing passes or overlapping runs or deep runs or movement or anything significantly positive. It took 15 passes to move from midfield to the 35 on this current possession.
