I really would think TMZ would have had the kids thing if true, so that gives me some hope that it isn’t
I think that's fair, but at the same time, a balanced take would include all of the humanitarian work he was in fact responsible for.
He supported / supports 7 different youth charities, including his own foundation which runs a lot of programs, including a youth soccer club, a homeless-youth center and shelter, and several other initiatives on homelessness. He has personally granted over 250 wishes for the Make-a-Wish foundation. The NBA even had an entire dedicated webpage to chronicle all the charitable work that Kobe, specifically, did and was still doing.
He was no saint, but he was far from a monster, and did plenty of good for plenty of people besides just Lakers fans. A Tatum joke here and there isn't going to hurt anyone, and we shouldn't paper over the negatives about him either, but there is much to legitimately celebrate about his life.
Really, really, really hoping it's not the case.

The rape stuff is an essential part of his legacy and posters who view it as the most significant part of his legacy dont really need to wait until it suits you or is more comfortable for you to express their views. It is a completely valid point for this thread, to me.
And yes the potential of the kids being involved makes that angle not as suited for the moment but in fairness the part about the kids came up after those posts.
I doubt his daughters being all 4 of the others dead, especially since all of the earliest reports referenced officals calling him a passenger on the helicopter, or said 5 killed including the pilot.
Davey Allison as well. And he was the pilot, I believe. (Not big news in the northeast but huge around much of the country when it happened.)
I don't understand the whole "can't you let the body go cold first?" bit. Did anyone say that after Osama Bin Laden died? I'm NOT comparing Kobe to OBL. Just pointing out the absurdity of the statement. If you think someone was a bad person, then why does there have to be a waiting period to say so?
At the same time, we all have our flaws, and it's a shame someone died. But I'm much more concerned about how his death is going to affect other people.

The nearest major road to the crash site is Las Virgennes. To me it’s the most picturesque road in So Cal. It’s also a mountainous area. If you can recall the opening credits of MASH, that’s the area around Las Virgennes.
If you’ve never lived in So Cal it may be hard to imagine how common helicopter traffic is around here. On clear days one will go over my place at least every ten minutes. There hasn’t been any traffic today however.

Lots of stories from guys around pro ball that ve did at least 4 hours extra work everyday. Not uncommon that in the middle of the night he would wake up, not feel good about something head to the gym shoot, lift or something.
We probably need a separate “Kobe’s legacy” thread vs. news about Kobe’s death thread. Obviously people may differ but I’m not in a mode to debate his legacy at this point and would rather avoid that back and forth at this point.

I cannot speak for anyone else, but I'm just a person who thinks that comparing Kobe Bryant's death to Clemente's is asinine, and I find such comparisons as distasteful here as some of you who are so offended that a person or two might remind everyone that the guy had some flaws that were really, really awful. Lebron just passed Kobe last night for 3rd all-time scorer. Lebron could not have been more worshipful of Kobe, Kobe's legacy (to him) and how crazy Lebron thought it all was that he was passing Kobe Bryant, in the city where Kobe was born (Philly) and that he (Lebron) would be forever mentioned in the same breath as Kobe. It was a pretty telling salute.

The first part is spot on imo. Bryant is this generation's MJ in terms of how much he influenced the young players in the league. I expect that there are a lot of NBA players who are especially devastated right now.
Love or hate Bryant, he is perhaps the most influential NBA superstar of the aughts and I say that knowing full well how great and respected LeBron is.

Whether the guy actually committed a rape or not (and no one here knows whether he did), the rape accusations are going to be in the first paragraph of all his obituaries. Are you concerned that they won't be? Is that why it needs to be discussed in every post here?
The guy died an hour ago, and whether you like him or not, it's a seismic death in the sports world.
His rape case was extremely complex. We can relitigate in a separate thread but his actions were closer to Aziz than Weinstein. He is guilty of being a degrading, demeaning asshole for what he did.
