ABC reporting four of his children were on the helicopter. hope that's sloppy reporting, because if five died there had to be a pilot or two there no?

I might be completely wrong about this, but it seems like if you're in a plane then at least you have some chance of gliding to a "safe" landing, or at least one that doesn't end up in a pulverized mess. If your helicopter craps out, you're in a free falling hunk of metal.
You can try autorotating. Cables and power lines are problematic as well.

I've never heard about Kobe having a pilot's license, but if he was commuting all the time by helicopter it's not impossible?

people should step away for a bit and let things develop

Have there really been many lately?
Celebs, I don't think so.

Helicopters are generally pretty safe - not as safe as commercial aircraft but safer than single-seater GA aircraft. The issue is inexperienced solo pilots. Something like 70%+ of helicopter crashes are ultimately found to be due to pilot error.

Kobe doesn't appear to have been inexperienced, but neither was he a professional pilot. That stuff is best left to the professionals, because it's literally a matter of life and death. If you're a celeb and it solves your logistical hassles, fine, but hire somebody to fly you.

Can't you let the body cool first? Jesus fucking chirst.
You know what? A little bit no. What happened to the victim in that case - likely at the hands of Kobe Bryant and again at the hands of the fucking tabloids and even the mainstream press - was abominable. I can't believe everyone here, save one poster so far, seems to have forgotten about this. He was a hell of a ballplayer, he did a lot of good for his community, maybe he was a good father and husband, but he was also likely a rapist, and the tactics his lawyer used and he clearly ok'd during that time were disgusting and are a prime example of why women do not report rapes.

His wife wasn’t with him but let’s hope his kids weren’t, because no ones said anything about their whereabouts.
Whoever was reporting that cut into the Pro Bowl said that his 4 daughters were in the plane with him. Sure hope this isn't true.

Just shut up. Seriously. This is not the time or place to be rehashing an old case.

Jesus Christ. There are really posters here bringing up a 15 year old case? Let the man and his children get removed from the site first.

No?

edit. Talk all you want about him being a great athlete, and a great competitor.

Don't lie and say he was a great human when by all accounts, he was exactly not.
By all accounts he was also not the same guy now that he was 15-20 years ago.

I knew the girl during the time of the case. You don't know the details of a complex case and this is not the proper time and place to bring it up.

It's also not the place for "greatest humanitarian since Clemente" bullshit, and that's what she was specially responding to. I doubt she has any issue with people mourning.

Feel fucking terrible for all the young guys in the league right now. As bad as anyone here feels, the entire generation of young players right now just lost their idol.

The NBA is the best love-to-hate league because the level of ability is just fucking insane and there are so many great personalities. Nobody symbolizes that more than Kobe who was the 1A great villain for a decade+. Fuck.

Thank you. I don't understand how people aren't getting that.

Mourn for the guy - and mourn for his children, if ABC's report is to be believed - but let's be realistic.

Exactly right.
