Pat Light, Marco Hernandez, & Williams Jerez added to 40 man roster to protect them from Rule 5 draft. Anthony Varvaro outrighted and elects free agnecy. Josh Rutledge DFA. They already had 1 open spot.
Yeah, I thought he was going to be good for Red Sox, but I guess his elbow was just hanging on by a thread. The Red Sox basically let him go to the Cubs back in May, but the Cubs didn't think he was worth hanging on to either, which seems weird for a cheapish guy with a decent track record. I don't quite understand why he was activated from the 60-day DL when he won't be able to pitch until the latter half of next season, but whatevs.I'm unhappy to lose Varvaro, but not in a way that will cost anyone any sleep. If we add another reliever, he was getting pretty far down the depth chart. One consequence of having a lot of interesting young players is a full 40 man, and you end up losing a piece like Varvaro.
He's been good before; it wouldn't surprise me at all if he's good again.
There are no 60 day DL's in the off-season. Everyone counts towards the 40.Yeah, I thought he was going to be good for Red Sox, but I guess his elbow was just hanging on by a thread. Ah, that would explain it. Thanks! There are no 60 day DL's in the off-season. Everyone counts towards the 40.
Here is the Soxprospects write up on him.Any thoughts on Hernandez? I have not heard that name much - looks to be a decent SS on paper. Looks like he has an above average bat for the position.
That reads like a description for Rutledge, who was just let go, and is, of course, the quintessential utility playerHere is the Soxprospects write up on him.

They project him as a utility player in the majors. Nothing outstanding, decent at most things.
Rutledge isn't necessarily gone yet. He's only been DFA, so If he clears waivers, they can outright him to the minors rather than release him. That reads like a description for Rutledge, who was just let go, and is, of course, the quintessential utility player
Reading that profile, I felt like I was reading a description of Pedro Ciriaco, except for the "could hit 25+ doubles a year and around 10 home runs at his peak" part. And a Neck with a bit of added pop doesn't sound like a bad utility guy at all. Here is the Soxprospects write up on him.
