Liverpool have to win out to have any shot at 4th, if they do, United need to get 8 points or less from their remaining 5 matches. So 2 wins, 2 draws and a loss. If they lose to West Ham tomorrow they might start feeling the pressure.

Now it is REALLY interesting.

If Liverpool do the job and win out I think they make 4th. ManU will have to take 9 out of the 12 remaining - on current form that’s not looking likely. They were pretty dreadful today.

Hell, even if Liverpool drop points they could still make it.

The magic number for both Newcastle & United is 6. Have to keep the pressure up on Monday.

Newcastle have a GD advantage over Liverpool, but Liverpool have one over United.

So … the ship seems to have been righted and’s steaming all ahead full. What does this resurgence mean for the summer transfer plans (Still assuming no CL football)

- Has Fabinho‘s return to form and Curtis Jones’ emergence done anything to alter things? Small samples obviously but how does Fabinho go from a world class DM to basically unusable for six months and back to his old self in the space of two months? It may have something to do with AA’s switch. I have no clue … but I hope Klopp does as a lot of money is riding on this.

- is AA’s position switch to a hybrid RB/MF sustainable? It sure has been effective. The key to me seems to be Konate’s ability to cover for him. If he gets hurt what then? Klopp kind of insinuated the transfer strategy would be based on availability. So if the midfield prices are exorbitant (Declan Rice for £100m???, Caicedo for £70m ? ) then they could pivot to a new RB and make Trent’s switch permanent. One can dream of Cancello being sold to us from City.

So, looks to me like two new MFs - one PL ready (McAllister?) and a youngun (Gravenberch?) , a RB/LB backup (if not a starter) , decent young CB (to replace Matip and/or Gomez) and , if Kelleher leaves a backup keeper.

Of course, they could decide that guys like Bajetic, Jones and Elliot are good enough and get back in for Bellingham

All really good points here.

You have to treat Fab’s late season renaissance as a gift, not as a return to normal. There’s too much riding on it. Moving him is tough. He’s got 3 years at £180k/week on his contract. He’s going to want to exceed that total salary over 5 seasons (~£120k/week). And then there is the replacement question. Are they getting a plug & play starter on the market this summer (Caicedo?)? Do they trust Baj to be the starter in the case that a new fella doesn’t bed in quickly?

I think Trent is the 8 that Klopp wanted Thiago to become and that’s how he should be played. That would mean getting a new starting RB because the Ramsey kid couldn’t even get a whiff this year. I’m not even sure who would be a good replacement.

CB is def a need given the fragility of the the current crew. This means Matip departs. Dortmund’s Schlotterbeck looks the part to me, but he just arrived this season. The price to pry him away will be eye watering.

The overwhelming consensus is that Liverpool is strongly going after Mac Allister, Mason Mount and Gravenberch for midfield.
The other rumor/piece of news that seems like it will happen is that Kelleher is leaving and replacing him with Ron-Robert Zieler

Other names that pop up a decent amount: Manuel Ugarte, Romeo Lavia, Nicolo Barella, Aurelian Tchouameni (this one seems like a real long shot but apparently he’s unhappy at Real), Goncalo Inacio (defender) Jurrien Timber (defender), and Jean Clair Todibo (defender)

Displaced
If I am reading the table and match schedule correctly, we need to win our last 2, hope that Brighton beats Newcastle on May 18, and then hope that Chelsea wins outright or draws against Newcastle and/or Man. U. That's a bit of painting with a broad brush, but it'll do the trick and get us to CL, right?

Newcastle or Man U. could, of course, drop points against their other last opponents (Bournemouth, Leicester, and Fulham), but Brighton and Chelsea seem to me to be the most obvious spots for assistance.

Assuming Liverpool win their last 2 games, then United need at least 6 points from their last 3 matches to finish top 4, so in other words, 2 wins out of 3. Anything less than 2 wins, and Liverpool will finish above them. As for Newcastle, it's somewhat similar. 2 wins out of 3 and they will finish top 4. However, they can also finish top 4 with 1 win and 2 draws if Liverpool don't overcome the GD differential.

Man U have Bournemouth away this weekend, followed by Chelsea and Fulham at home. Newcastle have Brighton at home on Thursday, followed by Leicester at home and Chelsea away. If Brighton can do to Newcastle what they did to Arsenal a few days ago, Newcastle could start to get really nervous.

Got dusty in my living room when Firmino scored the equalizer yesterday. Even more so when he was just looking into the stands after the final whistle. My avatar says it all in how I feel about him. Haven't loved a player more in the shirt since Gerrard.

Schmadtke confirmed, officially starts on June 1.

The Athletic reports that it was Klopp’s agent that recommended Schmadtke for the job. So apparently Klopp is for this move.

Seems really high risk. I think the most likely outcomes is Schmadtke is out next summer. The marginal outcome is this is a brilliant, unexpected move Let’s see…

Schmadtke and Klopp are friends I think. I think this signals that Klopp will have a bigger say on transfers than before.

Supposedly it’s just a short term deal .. this summer basically … which can be extended if “all parties agree”

Heavy rumors that Liverpool has agreed with Mac Allister and the transfer fee is around 65M.

The other names that are being heavily talked about are Khephren Turam (midfielder), Manu Kone (midfielder), and Mickey Van de Ven (defender who Schmadtke previously signed for Wolfsburg)
