I think it's Baltimore (the second wild card) that would need to win (against the Jays, in what would appear to be a battle for wild card home field), but yes!

Would need help. Their elimination # is 2 for the wild card, so a Red Sox win vs the Yankees does not count as two.

Edit: A bit late.

The Yankees still have an elimination number of 2 for the Wild Card. The Yankees will not be completely eliminated unless Baltimore also wins (against Toronto)

Edit: Even later

Say we clinch in the next day or so. Do they go all out for home field or rest guys up?

I felt like a tennis ball following the Jays/Yanks game tonight. On the one hand, I would have loved to see the MFY take one step closer to finishing under .500, but on the other hand, I wanted to see the magic number reduced to one. Glad it turned out the way it did since the MFY isn't as important.

Go Sox.

I'd rather see 'em finish in the #2 spot and get Cleveland than either Baltimore or Toronto. I think both teams are better than their records indicate and will give the Sox a harder time in the Division Series. JMO.

With three days between the end of the season and Game 1 of the ALDS, should they clinch they can play well and get set, just do not use Porcello or Price in the last two games (and rest bullpen arms as needed). Otherwise they should play as well as they can and see where it ends up. It will also be interesting to see what the other division winners do.

The guys need a blow. Everyone regular should get at least a day or two off if they clinch early. I think worrying about matchups is foolish. None of the opposition in the AL is anyone that needs to be avoided.

I agree 100%. Let the other teams try to maneuver to avoid the Sox, because that's what's happening: no one wants to play the Sox right now.

I would much rather have all our players at peak efficiency and I'll take our chances against anyone anywhere

There's 3 days rest before the division series - I say field as close to a normal team as possible - nagging injuries and Price's last start excepted. Home field throughout is worth it.

There's also the chance of knocking the Jays out of the playoffs this weekend. They have the toughest lineup and the toughest home crowd of all the contenders imo(next to ours of course). Of course the Tribe will be easiest out of the bunch, however. Unless Houston somehow sneaks in.

I don't see that happening to the Jays. Granted it was against the MFY, but they looked good over the weekend and nearly pulled it off last night. Their three games vs BAL will decide things IMO.

Not really concerned about matchups but I think they should be trying to get home field at least for the ALDS. If I've read it correctly, the Sox own the tiebreaker against the Indians based on head to head and lose the tiebreaker against Texas (head to head tie, Sox lose on intradivision winning percentage). Beating at least one of those teams out for home field would be nice.

I would start Price Sunday, and give him 90 pitches or so. That would set him up for Game 2 on Friday. I don't see the benefit in giving him 9 days off at this point -- keep him on schedule.

Extra rest has also not been his friend this year. Not sure whether its 90 or something less, but he should definitely go on Sunday.

Yes...the over rest thing is a thing. Let him do his thing as easily as possible on Sunday and stay in his routine before game 2.

if saturday gets rained out and the game matters for seeding (or toronto in the wild card), will they still play it? as in double-header sunday? move it to monday?

They need to shut down Xander and Bradley for the rest of the regular season. Both look gassed especially Boegarts. Let Panda play a game or two and see what happens if he's actually close and in halfway decent shape by Panda standards.

I like the Panda idea and the idea of slightly resting everyone but would not just give them extended time off. Give those guys 2 off games over the last 4 and then there's the 3 day wait for the playoffs.
